  1. Badda bing, badda bip, badda boom.
  2. Now there's a good idea! Hey speaking of watch parts, did you get that thing for that guy what needed that thing? (Godfather quote )
  3. I use a wad of sticky tape, press like hell and crank it open. No worries.
  4. Verrrrrry nice! Don't be too fast to go with a faded insert. My 1665 is from 1971 and the dial has gone tropical but the (original) insert is still a deep rich black.
  5. Hey, he's giving you "shaka" so you know he's diggin' that piece. And a left-hander to boot! We lefties gotta stick together.
  6. We had this same discussion a few years ago, and someone posted a reference showing that some Asian manufacturers were mass-producing nearly complete "Swiss" movements for upscale brands. Those movements were sent to Switzerland for "final assembly" which gave them the right to call them "Swiss" movements. IIRC, someone wondered out loud whether those same Asian factories were producing some of the higher quality rep movements. I came *that* close to mentioning that "Over There" where the Doxaholics meet. Can you imagine how the mods would have scrambled for the BAN button?
  7. Hey, those elves have unionized now, and they're demanding the BIG wages. Don't mess with the elves or Bubba Elf will pay you a visit.
  8. Dunno about that. This one was $275 brand new in 1971. And, it was hand-built by Wilsdorf's elves
  9. I've worn my vintage MBW 1665 for hockey practice sessions for 13 years. Many times that means an HOUR of practicing slapshots. After a really, really tough practice, sometimes I need to reset the time, as the minutes hand has rotated backwards 90 degrees. Other than that? No worries. No way would I wear that big turnip during a game. Sure, the watch would survive it, but I'd get my wrist broken right at the watch. Its height would make a fine leverage point.
  10. I read something once that I just can't disagree with: "Rolex: the world's most expensive $500 watch"
  11. All right ya buncha meatheads. The man said he wanted to buff out some scratches, so AGAINST MY BETTER JUDGEMENT I gave him the old Softscrub trick. Now if it was up to me, I'd give it a wee bit MORE character to the crystal, make it look like it's been there, and done that. Start with something like this:
  12. Oh, very nice! I bought one almost identical to that for Ms. Nanuq, save for a red enamel dial. Gorgeous piece!
  13. My favorite part is the gold "gumball" crown.
  14. All good advice here. Polish that crystal with some Softscrub and your thumb, and that looks like a gen crown/tube to me. Keep the photos coming!
  15. I want to know how he fit down a 24" pipe?! Holy schmolies.
  16. By GLENN E. RICE The Kansas City Star A contract worker examining a Raymore sewer drain was swept through the 24-inch pipe this morning
  17. I still wake up screaming when I have *shudder* The Nightmare. Someone here posted photos of a very lovely Roamer Stingray, only to rip its heart out to power another project! The horror! The horror!
  18. Can you post up some photos of the watch you're talking about? I don't know Andrew's pieces but I can for sure tell you if it's anywhere near accurate. Here's an example... thin case, correct bezel size and lug hole sizing. This is the 6mm Twinlock crown, an 8mm Brevet crown would be much larger.
  19. Asteroid to skim past Earth By Nick Collins Published: 7:00AM BST 12 Oct 2010 An asteroid larger than a double-decker bus is to pass within 28,000 miles of Earth on Tuesday, but has no chance of hitting the planet, Nasa has said. The giant rock, which is 20ft (6m) wide, will come its closest shortly before midday, though astronomers are not sure what its exact path will be. But experts, who named the asteroid 2010 TD54, said that despite passing very close to the planet it would not enter the atmosphere, and that even if it did it would burn up before reaching the ground. Nasa's Asteroid Watch said on Twitter: "Small space rocks this size would burn up in our atmosphere & pose no ground danger." The group added that a "moderate telescope" would be required to make out the rock, which will at times be closer to Earth than some satellites, and significantly nearer than the moon. Emily Baldwin, of Astronomy Now, told The Times: "Fortunately it seems this one will miss us. But it is a reminder that the Earth is still in the middle of a cosmic shooting gallery and we need to keep constant watch for incoming asteroids". --------------------------------------------------- So.... If it's about the same size as a double-decker bus, but we've missed it, can we expect another one soon? Alternatively, it's a good thing the asteroid isn't the "Number 11" or it might come in groups of three.
  20. Roger that. I spent a long time making a lot of contacts before I was able to get in the "circle of trust". That earned me Scotty's email address, which hooked me up with (the original) George. That got me connected to Maria and he built mine for me.
  21. Nemo? I heard they found him....
  22. Bear in mind the height of the side walls is also determined by the "flatness" of the bezel insert. In my photo the insert to the right is much flatter so the side walls look taller. The insert on the left watch has more of a pronounced "dish" to it so that covers a bit of the side wall. Compare the "30" on each one to see the difference. That easily masks a lot of the side wall height difference.
  23. Here's the factory low dome (left) vs. factory Superdome (right)
  24. Today it's the crusty old Doxa Sharkhunter for me.
