  1. Holy smokes... you're absolutely right!! DON'T OPEN YOUR WATCH BOX!!! You may still have a watch collection. But there's no way to know for sure.
  2. Great info, Freddy. I just use Arm&Hammer Whitening toothpaste and my thumb, followed by a brisk rub on my shirtsleeve.
  3. It depends on the owner. Some people demand absolute from-factory perfection so they would demand the Superdome T39 be installed to make it "correct". They would absolutely remove/replace the "wrong" crystal it wears but they wouldn't want to polish the case for fear of removing metal. To others, it's more important to preserve the way it expresses the life it's lived. And if it's waterproof... BONUS! So does this one stay the same, or get a new crystal?
  4. Roger that. I have an appointment in January to meet with an old watchmaker friend and finally mount a vintage superdome tropic 39 on my SD, and get it pressure tested. But I'm really struggling with the decision. The crystal on it now is not the period correct piece, but each gouge and scrape was acquired the hard way, while it was working as a tool watch. I'd rather have a legitimate beat up old crystal than a legitimate sparkling new (old) Superdome.
  5. Nostalgia. It's one of many ways to stay connected with the past. It was a different time, and most people think they would prefer to live in a snapshot of that era indefinitely. How many face to face interactions do we have nowdays? How many meaningful discussions? That sort of thing has turned into forums and instant messaging and texting. It's become a rare event to sit with a close friend and spend quality, meaningful time. So we hearken back to fond memories of those days with vintage pens, vintage cars, vintage watches, vintage clothing... heck some even go so far as to personalize it in their body. I understand TwoTone has vintage KNEES.

  7. A 28800 balance running in a 21600 movement would produce a watch operating at 1.33x normal speed, gaining 20sec in a minute. Correct? I bet the beat/amplitude is way too large so the escapement is grabbing an extra tooth periodically. That wheel turns forward one extra tooth, movement leaps forward an entire extra notch, making it run fast... while the beat period stays the same.
  8. Hey a good Norwegian doesn't NEED a reason to jump naked into a lake in winter. Much like a mountaineer: "why did you climb it?" Answer: "because it's there" A crazy viking: "why did you jump in that lake?" Answer: "MORE GROG!!!" Arrrrrrghghghghhhhhhhh!
  9. The annual polar plunge went off without a hitch (or a stitch...of common sense) this past weekend. Air temps were just below zero and over $275,000 was raised for Special Olympics Alaska. WOOT!!!
  10. *snerk* Now yer just makin' a wish.
  11. Tsk tsk, apparently TT has never experienced the visceral, savage feline response of a woman dressed in fine Doxa. Although, I'm not sure it's wise to try at this stage of life. At the last Staff birthday party for the old boy he was looking a little ragged around the edges.
  12. Nope... but chances are a NOS Beads of Rice might just happen to appear on the 'Bay after this BL sells...
  13. I just spotted a rarer-than-rare Black Lung on the 'Bay, item #320632443604 This makes six verified examples of the watch, with one more probable example.

  16. Why thank you sir! Hey I visited my watchmaker tonight and he has a new tool... and he is absolutely positive he can open that Red Sub. If you send it to me I promise I'll be a good boy and NOT open it myself and I'll take it to him so he can try out his tool. He's Rolex certified. Sound like fun??
  17. Oooooooooooo, I just had a thought. One of these And one of these.
  18. Yeah, I saw that too. And look at the non-ivory color of the indices on the top-right example. Is that a *gasp* four-line Red? Hooooooly smokes.
  19. Does this count? AOPA triple date pre-Navitimer on a hike through the woods, -28F and sky-high barometer. Perfect conditions!
  20. I'm looking pretty hard at the dial thinking the hour indices are overly white when they should be more ivory colored. And the red text... I hope it's authentic but those are SO rare... what are the chances? There's a red text Snowflake for sale here right now. I could have that exact dial recreated by Kirk Rich for $300. A flight for inspection would be worth the expense for sure.
  21. Most expensive jeans? The Carhartts whose tool loop caught on the emergency brake handle, releasing it and causing this: ps: not really! but what a hearbreaker!
  22. It's possible to take most of that stretch out with new center links. But the tiny bars that connect both side links also wear out. The 9315 on my SD was like that, in some places you could see the connector bars were almost worn through. So I bought a near-new 9315 on the 'Bay and put the original aside.
  23. "Bond" Submariner now up to almost $32,000 Bond Sub What a difference a little red writing makes...
