my new project rolex sea dweller 1665 gw..any vintage expert?
panerai153 replied to chronobam's topic in The Rolex Area
With the ingod rail dial, you are going to have to use a DW overlay, I believe. The Date window on the gen/aftermarket dials is slightly different, and the ETA DW will not be centered in the date window.Look at alligoat's build very nice one without spending a ton of money. -
Reps for service with "non" rep friendly watchmakers?
panerai153 replied to CokeSmurf's topic in General Discussion
All they can do is refuse service. they have no authority under the law to seize private property. They may give you some nasty remarks about buying a "piece of trash" replica, but beyond that, they can't do anything. In fact if i were an AD, and someone came into my store with a fake, I would politely tell him, I'm sorry, but Rolex will not allow us to work on Replica watches, but I if and when yo decide to purchase a genuine watch, i will be more than happy to help you with finding one. We also sell very nice jewelry, etc. so if you are ever looking for a present for your wife, girlfriend, business associate, etc., please come by and let us help you. If you treat folks like that, who knows, that individual might very well come in six months later and spend 5k on and engagement ring!! -
I really like reps but sometimes i feel bad

" Lastly, I think my watch makes "sense". I only mean it makes sense in that the age:profession:income:watch ratio all seems to add up" I believe that this is a very succinct way of putting it. plug in the values and if they add up, then you are going to be fine, otherwise you are suspect. Just like the counter guy at McDonalds, no way that kid is going to be able to afford a DSSD, unless his parents/grandparents gave it to him as a present, his father owns the McDonalds and he's making the kid work at the store. So even though it may be genuine, without knowing the facts, your automatic conclusion is "That guy can't afford a 7k watch, thus it's a fake. On the flip side, they see and old guy like me who has a very good job, good income, nice house, etc. I'm wearing a Rolex 1665, or 1680, or whatever, because of the equation above that folks run through their heads in a nano second, the conclusion is the watch is genuine because the guy can afford It. Now were I wearing a Richard Mille like Nadal's watch that cost 600K, more than likely folks would say, even though he's doing OK, he ain't doing that OK, thus it's fake!! My last response to this is, no one cares!! most people are too busy with their own life, their own problems to notice. this is something you will come to realize as you get older. Trying to impress others is a lesson in futility, best left to the wannabees who flock to all the "latest and greatest clubs, fads, you name it. Wear what you want, drive what you want, because it's what you want, not what you think others want or others think you want. -

Get yourself a set of jewelers screwdrivers, and do it yourself. Adjusting bracelets with screwed in links is about one step in complexity above changing a light bulb!! Look at the people doing it for you in the mall shops. They don't know a watch crown from a billygoat's a*ss, but they can adjust bracelets and change batteries!! AFA the folks in the Mall shop knowing if it was a rep or gen, don't worry, they can't!! I bet you could take a bad rep of one of the brands they sell, and they still couldn't tell. The girl adjusting your watch if she is less tha 30, can probably tell you the names of ever Rock singer on the planet currently singing, the best place to get a tatoo in Stockholm, every color of nail polish at the mall cosmetics store, but rest assured, changing batteries and adjusting bands is not her life work and she isn't interested. Unless the folks who work in mall store in Sweden are a different breed than the mall workers here in the USA, I sure wouldn't worry. Having said that Who knows if she is going to be able to adjust a band without scratching up the links, stripping a screw, etc. Better to do it yourself. I wouldn't take my Rolex rep into a Rolex AD and ask them to adjust the bracelet. They probably have a watchmaker on site, who does all that, and he can probably tell . And if he's suspicious, all he has to do is walk out front, get a genuine out of the display case and compare them side by side, you're busted!!!. Mall shops OK, AD's not OK -
look at where the seller is from!!! These old watches are all over Ebay. usually coming from Eastern Europe. What these guys are doing is taking old pocket watch movements (There must be millions old of unused pocket watches lying around). they decase the movements, and since most of the cases are either silver od gold, they melt the cases down for scrap. Putthe movement in a new case, a new dial with a famous watch company's logo and lettering and sell it on ebay to unsuspecting folks who think theyare gettin a genuine IWC. Patek, etc. for pennies on the dollar. They are pretty straight forward and honest that these are "marriage" watches. Not much of a bargain as they are all huge, impossible to waterproof, pretty difficult to find parts if a movement problem occurs, I bought one years ago, never ran, sent it off to a watchmaker and he basically told me to throw it away, it wasn't worth fixing.

I do look old, because I am!!! I never had any problems with my watches, if someone asks me if it's real, I generally say it's one I made using gen parts. However, i believe I've been asked abiout twice in the past 15 years. If you are too young, and/or too poor to carry off a genuine Rolex, then you may have a credibility problem. If someone asks if it's "Real" my answer would be sure it's real. It may not be a "Real" Rolex, but it is a real watch.the second part of your answer is optional on your part. -
Mighty nice. I definitely like the 2 line better!!

joey and Freddy, that's why I decided to go with the 1675 white dial, it's a lot easier to cut off the dial feet than grind down the lip of the 6542 dial. In fact if you had one of those neat welding jigs that someone, I believe offshore, had a post about here, you could easily weld new legs in the exact position to fit and ETA. Like you and joey both know from long years of experience, a lot of this rep business is trial and error, and over time you see where improvements can be made. It ain't easy that's for sure.

i used the ingod44 1675 White dial for my 6542. It has dial feet which have to be removed, but the dials are otherwise identical (Dial face). The 6542 dial has a concave lip around the edge that is designed to snap on to a gen Rolex 1030 movement. It might work fine with an ETA, but the lip may pose a problem. Maybe others like joeyB can chime in here and give you better advice. The only reason I changed mine to the ingod dial was because of DW alignment problems with the dial joeyB made for me. his dials are really beautiful, but the blanks have the date window a little too far out toward the edge of the dial, which makes the numbers too far to the left. He has been trying to find dial blanks with the correct date window placement but AFAIK he hasn't been able to source them. another plus, the 1675 dial is about 100 USD cheaper!!

Is your case one of the old MBW cases, or is it one of the newer ones? Not sure that there is any difference between the cases, but it's possible? Would a movement out of a model like a Datejust have a thinner calendar ring?

Looking for input on this dial Dial Impressions
panerai153 replied to freddy333's topic in The Rolex Area
looks pretty good! The subdial numbers on the gen certainly are crisper and better defined, the serifs look a little p[rominent as well and as daniel said, the coronet is different, but who knows what was going on back then. I would bet that at regular watch size, under a crystal, it would be hard to tell the difference. I don't think this is a 300 buck dial though, probably closer to 1k, but i'm not to well versed on Daytonas. "I know nothing about the Daytonas and such....is the marker at 6 position supposed to cover up "Swiss"..?? Weird, why are all the other markers square, but the marker @ 6 has a rounded bottom ? -
I believe that had a watch been detained by FedEx customs clearance, you would have gotten a message to that effect. "Beyond our control" generally means that it's weather related or some special event. i saw on the FedEx website that deliveries would be delayed in certain Zip codes in the New Orleans area during the week of the Superbowl. That would be something beyond their control just like a snow storm, hurricane, etc.

Looks very nice, just wear it!!!
-
I agree with the aging, artificial aging often looks just like that, artificial aging. i quarantee you, I can wear one for a year, and it won't need any other aging. just normal wear will do it. Also agree with the date window. Here is mine with a very similar dial to Freddys. When you use a genuine movement and DW, there are no alignment problems. I believe that you have a very nice watch, It would definitely profit from a better dial. Here is mine, just for Date window comparison. I think the problem with yours is there are no distinct bevels, and the corners are not hard beveled corners like the genuine dials. This old watch has been worn pretty hard, I wore it everyday for a long time, still wear it pretty often.

Best delivery method from UK to USA / OZ?
panerai153 replied to dommysam's topic in General Discussion
That sounds awfully expensive for a letter, large envelope. i would investigate other alternative shipping sources. however, all of the shippers are getting very expensive. USPS has gotten ridiculous with their rates. my wife shipped three boxes to her family in Ukraine last week, each box probably weighed less than 15 pounds, an were all about 20"X20" X 14" tall. total price 350.00 USD!! 5-6 years ago, those same 3 boxes would have cost around 160-180 USD, almost doubled in 5 years. -

I just got an email newsletter from Trusty, looking at the watches, I decided to click on "buy it now" on one of the watches, as that is the easiest way to get to the website. Well, much to my surprise, the website has been taken over by a Law firm representing Oakley!! the entire page is filled with the usual "lawyer speak", but the end result is his website is now down. Unless the Lawyers are sending out phishing emails with rep watches featured to see who tries to open up the website.

Several days ago, I think in the wristies postings(Can't remember which day, i saw a post by a forum member who makes custom alligator straps. i wen back and searched through abourt a week of old wristie threads, but couldn't find his post. It seems like he has a website, and it's something like Migliore Straps or something like that. Does anyone know who I'm talking about? Thanks

Hard to beat the gen on this one. i realize the photo is pretty magnified, but the correct hand stack is pretty apparent, and to me IHS is going to be a pretty big tell if the hands are in the right position,(GMT hand is right under or close to the hour hand on the IHS) and someone who knows is looking. also the bezel is really different from all the reps. bolder numbers, different color and the plat paint is hard to replicate.

I bet if you were a little ingenious, you could google "watch forums" and you would get a pretty comprehensive list of forums!!

Nice strap. Is the "Emergency" a rep?

Personally, I like the flex shaft better, not sure if that one's low speed is slow enough, just got to try it and see I suppose.
