  1. I have a Clarks crystal to fit on it. I haven't tried it yet, but it will attach in the same way that everyone is describing the bezel should fit (not glued like the PT setup). I need to finished sanding the rehaut before I attach the crystal and bezel. I also think I am going to end up sending the watch away to be finished, as I messed up the keyless on my movement and might as well get it serviced. Heres whats going into mine: PureTime 6542 InGod Dial World Time Inc Bezel $250 (I negotiated and got it for under $200) JoeyB Insert $150 (VIP Members) Clarks Crystal $10 RafflesTime Vintage GMT Hand $50 (Best Offer/Say you're with RWG for a discount) Custom 'rusty' red suede strap from Donerix The GMT hand is on the long boat here, its all I am missing now, as JoeyB's insert should be waiting for me at home. The PT bracelet isn't anywhere close to acceptable for me - the clasp is especially horrible. I have wondered about buying a Yuki 7206 rep and trying to do some surgery on the bracelet to take the end links off of the PT and swap them onto the Yuki, but I have no idea if that would work or not, and may end up ruining both bracelets. I have a gen bracelet for my 6538 and never wear it, I prefer it on a croc strap or Bond NATO.
  2. You are already expecting to take a loss on it, I would (personally) just leave it as is and let the buyer figure it out. If the watch is hard to source now, it might be worth it to someone who wants to mod it. Like everyone else has said, the movement is the most valuable part. Did it come with the roulette date wheel? I'm doing a built right now using the watch I bought a long time ago. If you do a search, you can find Donerix's build and a comparison of the case to a gen 6542... the shape of the PT case is very good, minus the lug holes and the rehaut. The rehaut can be sanded/machined down to look good and a larger, better quality dial can be fitted (I got one from Ingod). The lug holes there isn't much you can do, but I am going to place mine on a strap so I don't mind it (and prefer the markings between the lugs). The case won't work if you want to fit a bracelet, and the bracelet that came with the watch is crap. As for the bezel, mine came with teeth that are barely there and looks cheap - I picked up a gen style bezel on eBay and got an insert from JoeyB that should be arriving today.
  3. Maybe I am wrong... but I have a Puretime 6542. I took the watch and the bezel apart as soon as I got it, which was years ago now, I guess, so my memory is fuzzy. My bezel assembly never had a retaining spring on the bezel assembly, that I can recall. On mine, the bezel is two parts and the inner ring and the bezel are cut at an angle. The inner ring is smaller at the top than the bottom and I am *pretty sure* that when I got the watch, this inner ring was attached with adhesive. Since its slimmer at the bottom and then angles out, it keeps the bezel from coming off.
  4. Something like that should work, thanks I've never heard of CQ, I'm guessing its sort of like ioffer? I had been looking at the white Explorer Trusty has for $118. I don't PLAN to lose the watch, but I'm not looking for something to mod and then if something happened to it, kick myself in the ass for time/money lost. I was searching the forums here but most GMT posts are about crazy accurate builds so I thought I'd just throw the question up here.
  5. Haven't posted here in a while but just received delivery of a TC Sub and the bug has bitten me again. Anybody want to comment on the best out of the box GMT currently available? I am traveling next month and think a GMT will be fun. Since I am going to be doing a lot and walking different cities, I don't want something that I'll be upset over if I lost it or it got stolen. All of my current watches, aside from the TC, are frankens. Right now I'm thinking a Cartel white Explorer II, but the crooked 12 o'clock marker has me bothered. Can you straighten that out? Any other good reps out there right now that are cheap and decent out of the box, with no big tells? I'm avoiding the new orange hand Explorer IIs because I think they're a tad large for my wrist.
  6. I'm guessing wherever she got certified also sells the $1ks worth of gear they told you that you needed? I had a very bad experience of buying a GroupOn for scuba lessons and then being nickled and dimed on all sorts of stuff that wasn't included. I should have asked for a refund as soon as they told me I had to buy a $30 instructional DVD that wasn't included in the groupon, but my friend also signed up for it and we both didn't want to be the one who backed down. On top of all the [censored] stuff I had to buy that was required but not included in the groupon, of their required equipment that I HAD to personally own, 90% of my dad's stuff I brought in they said was not up to their spec to dive with. I ended up having to spend even more on gear that I technically already had. Horrible experience & I only ever buy groupons for food now. A $170 groupon ended up costing me $500+ Sad to say I hear this about practically any Scuba cert class, the instructors are equipment salesman first and teachers last.
  7. But man do you get great service at every other store in the mall once you're walking around with that LV shopping bag!
  8. http://www.thegentlemenscorner.com/the-gazette/2012/02/the-flamboyant-issue/style-icon-gianni-agnelli Or, I've seen felt like stickers that attach to the case back so skin doesn't make contact. They're kind of like those felt pads that go under furniture.
  9. I've got one, bought it used on eBay from a guy in Ireland. I understand its originally sold in a chain of department stores called 'Argos' or something like that. Its a good beater watch. I like to buy homages before I invest more money and this fits the bill. I get quite a few compliments on it and the strap is pretty decent. Like people have said, I would just buy it and leave it like it is.
  10. There is a company that deals in movie props which sold off the five remaining watches from the film (Gosling kept one) for $1,200 a piece. I contacted the company about purchasing a watch but they couldn't actually tell me any details about the watch. As they were selling the watch strictly based on the collectability of it being in the film they didn't want to take the time to verify if it was quartz, automatic, what was inside of it, etc...
  11. Well you kinda wedge it into the corner. I've sometimes has trouble with it becoming a little loose if I stuff too many small bills into it, stretching it out, but it mostly tightens back up with a little time.
  12. I am a fan of the Slimmy, its what I use. Doesn't open up like a normal wallet. Has three main section, I keep my Debit/Credit Cards & ID in one, cash in one, and rewards cards in the third. Keep it slim and slide in my front pocket. Seems like good enough quality leather to me. http://www.koyono.com/Slim-Front-Pocket-Wallets-s/3.htm There are several different versions (contrasting colors, some with clear ID slots) and they range from about $35 to $50. Mine has held up well for the year plus I've had it.
  13. I buy stuff from gilt every now and then... sites like that are aggravating because you need to be so quick to add items to your cart and reasonably sized stuff sells out quick. Also, their return policy means if something doesn't fit you can only return for store credit. I also am not a fan of them now constantly pushing their regular retail site, Park & Bond, which seems positioned to try to compete with the likes of Mr. Porter and is disgustingly expensive. Do go there to check out their marked up vintage watches though! For similar sites, also check out Fab.com, HauteLook, RueLaLa, and Century21. They all offer a similar experience and its worth it to keep an eye on them. Gilt has the best selection by far though and also has interesting options with their Taste and JetSetter sites. If you're looking for affordable fashion, and I've mentioned this before, keep an eye on Dappered.com and participate in their forums. The stores he focuses on are not exactly the calibre of what Gilt mostly covers - its more Old Navy/Gap/Banana Republic, Lands End Canvas, Macys, J. Crew, Express, Zara, H&M, etc... - but its a good guide to learn when those sites have deep discount sales and he hand picks a lot of select items which usually have a timeless design and good quality/price ratio. The guys on the forum often get into some of the higher-end stuff like Allen Edmunds and such. Also, if you're in the US, Nordstrom has an outlet called the Rack and Neiman Marcus has Last Call. Last Call is great for shoes and the Rack is great for shoes as well as a hit or miss selection of clothing I would consider wearing. Last Call is also good for some suits (Hickey Freeman is pretty common on their site) and I've found a big selection of suits at my local Rack (deeply discounted suits from CK, Ben Sherman, Burberry, etc...) and they provide an on-site tailor.
  14. I have a winder and only use it for gen watches I wear to work. Otherwise I just rotate my watches on my wrist and make sure I wear them each at least twice a month, so that they run and oil evenly distributes through the movement. Its my opinion that putting the watches on the winder will continuously work them and therefore require servicing sooner - so I will not put on any of my vintage watches or reps. Especially with the chrono, you should get it serviced before wearing it or putting it on a winder for extended periods of time.
  15. You guys are mixing up what exactly these Porsche watches are. Porsche maintains its own design house which, in addition to designing vehicles for the parent company, designs a bevy of other household and other mundane every day products. Its this 'Porsche Design Group' which produces these watches, and while yes they are majority owned by the car manufacturer, they work autonomously and create their own products as well as lend their design prowess to other companies who outsource their design work. Porsche Design in-house produces these watches, a line of sunglasses, lighters, luggage and more. I also have a LACIE brand external hard drive that was designed by Porsche for Lacie. So to compare these to Ferrari brand PAMs or other car watches isn't exactly fair. In fact, Tudor is the official watch of Porsche Motorsports at the moment although I do not believe they go as far as to co-brand and of the models with Porsche actually on the dial. My guess is that these Porsche Design watches sell well in countries where Porsche products are more independently pushed from the car brand. Perhaps in Europe? Asia? I have no idea.
  16. Do it. Accessories are exactly where you're supposed to be quirky/unique - whether its tie clips, bright socks, or a skull ring. Sometimes I wear this [censored] pin on the lapel of my suit (after hours, I don't wear a suit to work):
  17. Good luck man & great you came to the conclusion on your own. I am shooting for a more modest time of a month of no drinking as I'm doing a raw veggie/fruit, no processed foods diet to detox and shed a few pounds. Only five days in but seems to be going okay, don't know if I could last 6 months but once you get over it being a habit I'm sure you'll be good.
  18. I've got the model from Jomashop in red, looks indentical to this. The piece you put your watch on is spring loaded and a tab broke so the pieces fly apart if you're not careful removing the watch. The LEDs are annoying if it's in your bedroom and I wouldn't really call it quiet but it's not exactly loud either. Like the above poster says, you get what you pay for. I personally am not willing to pay more for a watch winder though, but I don't have any crazy complications. As far as winding your watches, it does all of mine fine. I tend to only keep my work watches that have date functions on them now since I don't want my vintage gens or reps running 24/7.
  19. Hey guys, Not really familiar with Patek. I've searched WatchEden which usually has every rep imaginable (even if they can't get it) but turned up zilch. This replica was said to be made for the film Drive, starring Ryan Gosling. Its seen quite a bit throughout the film and is the watch he uses to time his jobs. A GQ article calls it a fantasy replica but I'm not sure if they really made them from scratch/modified a rep or if there is a rep out there and the fantasy part is just the ticking sound effect they gave it in post production. The production company is selling off the five watches for a pretty hefty sum and can't even guarantee they work or what movement is inside of them. Was wondering if its something I could just get on my own for $80 online without the certificate of authenticity or if its a real deal watch they made just for the movie. Either way, its not a real Patek.
  20. I have a gen 1964 Rolex Datejust that I got for $1,200 about a year ago. It is instantly recognizable and with its silver face the Rolex emblem is clearly seen. When I go to strip clubs, it is the watch that girls most often will notice and ask the time I get more attention from that watch than any of my sport Rolex. I also am a big fan of the IWC Portuguese. If its only for one occasion, you could buy the black rep (which is supposed to be quite good) and flip it afterwards before any trouble happens with the movement. If you wanted to go in for that full $5k you could also probably pick up a gen of one with some bargaining.
  21. License to Kill he wears the current (for it's time) Submariner w/ date, the only Bond to wear a date sub and the last appearance of Bond wearing a Rolex in the films.
  22. I thought it auto-renewed, paid up now and back, thanks! I'll keep a better eye out next month.
  23. PM BK and he'll be able to explain a reasonable waterproofness to expect for the watches he sells. From what I recall, he uses his own design seal and with his dis- & re-assembly you're guaranteed that all the pieces are in place. If there is a fault in its water proofness, it will be in the design of the rep, not some quality control problem on the production line. I can tell you that I have safely showered and swam in the pool with my BK. Thats about the extent I would trust it without having it pressure tested. You can probably either ask BK or Vac to epoxy the HEV closed when they're doing service. Mine isn't as I didn't think much of it at the time but hasn't lead to any problems so far.
