  1. Oh come on now how many other women are thoughtful enough to carry a couple of kegs around in case someone wants a beer? Ken
  2. Just a point of fact. The Admin teams major concerns are when members want their ideas sanctioned in some way, in other words the idea becomes official and the team (and by extension, the board) becomes responsible when things go wrong. The idea does have merit if you can get the numbers but some points to think of... (1) The reviewer must be willing to do it for no financial benefit, we have been through the paid review debate before and don't want to go there again. (2) Someone needs to be the banker so it needs to be someone that you all trust. (3) It needs to be set up and run by the members, not the Admin team (4) You need to factor in the cost, and the dangers, of double shipping the watch. First to the reviewer then to the eventual winner. (5) If the watch is to be reviewed properly the it should first be reviewed by Ziggy or Vac so you know the motor is ok before the cosmetic review....which of course means shipping 3 times as well as the fact that if the movement is rubbish it may never survive the mechanical review. Don't want to rain on anyones parade but just adding more thought to the total idea. Ken
  3. My reply would be...."Thanks but no thanks and I hope you learn a modicum of customer service before you go broke" Ken

    Swine Flu

So now there's a doctor in the house, what is your opinion on the severity of this virus? Ken
  6. Ok I think we are missing a piece of the puzzle here. Let's re-cap.... 3 Months ago your GF takes your son and walks out the door, now just the other day she states that watches were part of the problem. Do you mean that when she left she gave no indication what-so-ever as to why? And even now after 3 Months she only fills you in on a small part of the problem? I'm sorry but if this is the case then it's a lost cause, as quite frankly if a woman doesn't want to tell you how you blew it then she just doesn't want you back. Then there's the point that any woman who says they would prefer you to look at porn than watches hasn't really thought that through, I think if anyone of us spent as much time looking at porn as we do on this site our women will drag us off to the shrinks real quick. Ken
  7. Reviews are nice but they are rare too, I think I average about one review for every 10 to 15 happy customers. ken

    Swine Flu

Swine Flu is now becoming a very hot topic here in Aus after going from zero cases about a week ago to over 500 at the moment, 400 of these in my state alone, so I have been giving it a lot of thought. First up I see the whole affair as a bit of a beat up, this mornings news states that WHO signals that a pandemic is imminent, yeah fine but surly by these same measures the common Winter flu goes pandemic every year? But H1N1 kills people you say? Well so far we had an initial tally of some 200 deaths in Mexico revised down to below 100 and now the worldwide tally stands at 117, most (for whatever reason) have occurred in Mexico, the common Winter flu claims 3000 lives a year! I remember reading an article when SARS was sweeping Asia where WHO believes there is a big bang virus due (don't know how they work this out) and SARS wasn't it, the article goes on to say that WHO and world Government groups were concerned that they were not in fact ready to battle a worldwide pandemic. Call this a conspiracy theory if you like but is it possible that authorities have seen the outbreak of H1N1 as the perfect time to run a global drill? It just seems to me that the scare tactics are far outweighing the actual the realities of this virus and it's not the first time either, remember the bird flu scare? Still I am the father of a 7yo so obviously I want to assure her wellbeing as much as possible, so my question...... As we have a large international community here I was wondering if anyone has actually suffered this swine flu and if so in your opinion how bad (say in comparison to common flu) would you rate the virus? Ken

  18. Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married. Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying: don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Houses had thatched roofs -thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying: it's raining cats and dogs. There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence. The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying: dirt poor. The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entranceway. Hence the saying: a thresh hold. (Getting quite an education, aren't you?) In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme: peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old. Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, bring home the bacon. They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat. Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous. Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust. Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake. England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift) to listen for the bell. Thus, someone could be saved by the bell, or was considered a dead ringer. And that's the truth. Now, whoever said history was boring? Ken

  24. I think after such a major health scare it is normal to reassess what your focus is in life. I'm sure Dave will pop in from time to time as he knows he has so many friends here, but we also can't begrudge him the time he spends with his family and true life friends. Dave was an icon of these boards and I think we just have to be grateful for the time he gave us and be content with his occasional visits from now on. Ken
