  1. Heh, that's the best description of ostrich I've heard yet!
  2. Solid choice, and not the right watch for a 1960s couch strap anyhow.
  3. It's gorgeous, it's awesome, I'm jealous. Wear that one well!
  4. Something from Victory. I suggest the Victory Vegas Jackpot... but your tastes may vary.
  5. More character, and the correct shade of gray per the gen...
  6. Yes... odd indeed, but true! It'd almost be wrong to not have this piece done that way! Someone mentioned cracks in the pearl, and that's probably the reason. This one is also cracked, letting in air and water (and dirt).
  7. Agreed on the rotor. Very nice touch. Rather than making longer pusher extensions, couldn't you bore the holes a tad deeper and then retap them?
  8. My brother is in town for Easter, sporting this piece which I gave him a year or two ago:
  9. Looks great. That dial is from Natalie, and is quite good! The pearl and lume look very believable, too. Very much like this gen example! Happy Easter
  10. His and hers:
  11. The correct case is out there......
  12. not really. most phones don't have a gps. i think you're referring to carrier logs. not firmware tracking on the phone. however, most phones do have at least one way to determine your location, but the concern here is over secretly logging it. if i swiped your iphone, i could see everywhere you've been for the past year or more, which is creepy. if somebody swipes my cheapo candy bar phone he doesn't have access to historical location data. i wonder how many criminals / cheating spouses with recently seized iphones are shitting their pants about now
  13. yes they definitely know which tower you are talking to. but that covers a wide area. the iphone (if the story is true) is triangulating your exact location and recording it. being able to say "he's within 2 miles of X" is different than being able to say "he walked in to building X at 8:29:07".
  14. Oh and BTW, Apple essentially has r00t access to every iphone.
  15. Great info, I... It's getting to the point where this ought to be pinned! Broaching hands is definitely a can of worms on these. Just ask The Zigmeister. Gotta do it right or not at all with this one!
  16. Yours were a big part of the inspiration for mine...
  17. the gen:franken dollar ratios don't mean much, really. dollar amount is what's important and a savings of ~$6k is substantial. not to mention the thrill of the chase in building up the franken. and i have no doubt that these high dollar frankens do resell. many have in the past. but personally i won't put that theory to the test. mine's a keeper. i's probably is too.
  18. ya marketing for sure. i don't see 1.74 hoya lenses here in the usa but will definitely look in to it. 1.7 is probably not going to be a noticeable difference though , and the ar should perform the same
  19. I think the thin Hoya lenses are called "Phoenix" lenses. Are those what you got? Did you get the SHV EX3 coating also?
  20. I normally wear contact lenses, but have a pair of glasses for getting in and out of bed, or when my eyes are tired of the contacts late at night. Well after probably, geez, 10 or more years it's finally time for some new frames and lenses. As far as frames go, I've narrowed it down to either Cartier or Mont Blanc and am leaning towards the Mont Blanc. Both are extremely nice, IMO. The particular Cartier frames I like are titanium, while the Mont Blancs are ruthenium. But what really got me interested was researching lenses. I've found what sounds like an incredibly effective and scratch resistant AR coating (eyeglass coatings are usually not as scratch resistant as those we're using on our watches) that is available on a high-index lens made by Hoya. Hoya's brand name for the AR coating is Super HiVision EX3. Check out the marketing blurb here: http://www.hoyavision.com/assets/pdf/HoyaSHVEX3PDF.pdf I'll be using it on a set of the Hoya "Phoenix" high-index lenses which are supposedly the absolute thinnest and lightest eyeglass lenses available. The index of refraction on these lenses is the same as sapphire, as well. So... it of course made me think that this coating could in fact be suitable (and effective) for watches. I'll definitely evaluate it for that purpose once I receive the new glasses. Don't know if it's going to be cost effective, however. I do think it's north of $150 to have this coating put on eyeglass lenses. We will see!!
  21. Lookin' great, I!! BTW, 3.5k vs 10k... Seems very logical to me. Could buy a gen 1680 with the spare change.
  22. Sweet pictorial. The gen is definitely nicer, but if gen dials were easier to obtain, one could build one heck of a franken with the cartel as a base. I've often thought that a Rolex sub DW overlay would be a very good stand-in for the VCO DW. But that all said, I still have my old VCO in bits and pieces somewhere. I finally gave up on it due to the screw issue you mentioned. Anyhow, again, beautiful watch.
  23. Looks like a gen 1675 dial. Ronin - very impressive. Love this project, and the end product!
