  1. The Daehan Life Insurance Company building (DLI) in Seoul. Three story basement IMAX theater. Since 1985........ I got to see it in 87 and again in 88. It is definitely on my list for a third go around, the next time I make it to Korea. The building is 60+3 stories (they used to call it DLI63, now I think they call it 63City) and the entire exterior of the building is covered in real 24K Gold Leaf. You'll love it. Oh, and I did read Dava's book, because it happened to be on one of my favorite subjects... however, she does have a way with words, and if I hadn't already been in the pursuit of building the ultimate (at least my ultimate) chronometer "REP", I probably could have gotten away with blaming her for my insane pastime...
  2. Have you ever seen the biggest IMAX screen in a basement? (Oh, then... umm... then she's something like 9 Links or half a Perch tall, not 9 Chains. )
  3. Imagine how much fun it is to try and find 3 or 4 links to add everytime you get a new watch. Easy at the AD (other than the cost), a real pain in the ass trying to match them up from 1 or 2 different sources/makers for a Rep. Guess that is another reason for me to stick to unobtainable vintage, just a few more hard to find bits...
  4. TeeJay, I don't think I specified which Bond they got back to good basic watches with, or which time... Dalton was a real Bond. All the nonsense about being too young and then too busy 4 times before he finally took the job was just a cover story to avoid those damn gadget watches... Later, Brosnan had more gadgets coming out of his Omegas than ever before... Umm... Roger Moore had one no name that sprayed cyanide coated pellets, depleted uranium armor piercing rounds, etc, in Octopussy... AND his ticker tape Seiko Memory Bank watch was used to blow the rocket pad exhaust grate to save his ass in Moonraker... (reverse order) .... BEFORE the exploding key chain... And Victoria, darling, I don't think Ms. Weaver is 182 meters tall... CM, maybe...
  5. Left out an option for "Changes watches more often than...", so I was left with daily. Fossil? Ick. No watch, eh. Just don't ask me for the time more than once a day. Bond? The "Real" Bond prefers Rolex. How can someone mention Thunderball without wishing for that Breitling Top Time "Geiger Counter"? Live and Let Die without the Diamond Cutting-wheeled Super Magnetic Submariner (uber Anti-Milguass?) that replaced his Hamilton Pulsar? Don't get me started on the satellite linked, ticker tape spewing, blast cord backed Seikos...... The only thing dumber than those were the generic dart gun watch and the Omegas that followed. And Fossils. REBOOTING THE TIMELINE??? Allowing that with Sum of All Fears is why I quit reading Tom Clancy. Of course, it doesn't matter that much with Bond. He's just a bit of good fun. At least they got back to a good basic watch that doesn't blow up or spew nerve gas. Dava? She'll have to get in line, behind VB.
  6. Nice layout and demonstration. Thank you for your tremendous efforts in educating the masses. I'm betting that you have at least one spare oiler that glows in the dark...
  7. The infamous Croton CF Chrono today. It's a tough one to capture, and my crappy camera (and lack of photographic inclination) make for some poor pics. But here it is anyway... Right now against this post... Looking rather blingy with that damn flash... Note that the subdials are all ringed with silver, and are still easily readable with all that flash going on.. see how Croton got it right with all the dials? Probably not... bonus points for ID'ing the background. I wish I could capture the way the dial looks on the wrist.. with the numerals, hands and subdials appearing to float in perfect glossy black space above a sea of equidistant stars...... More interesting background for this crowd.... Guess I need to get a better camera someday...
  8. Nice. How much?
  9. Great story Nanuq. Much better when the problem is self correcting. I like to cruise the shops in denim shorts and a t-shirt, no matter the weather. If I'm feeling really cantankerous, I might just wear my nasty work boots instead of my NB 6xx sneaks. Hey Vick, My old Croton Carbon Fiber Chrono may only command a mid-3 digit price tag instead of a low 4 digit price tag, but I like it a lot better than the new Tudor Chronautic CF copy of it. It's got one of the best looking, best balanced 12-9-6 faces I have ever seen on a Chrono. And, I think that even it's bracelet with half polished-half satin intermixed and alternating mosaic of links is more impressive than the same ol' same ol' Tiger's. Yeah, I know, I'm odd....
  10. They both look Gen to me. Used to have a similar auto. That auto btw, is probably in need of expensive service by now if the owner is getting rid of it. It's obviously been someone's "go to" watch of choice for a LONG time. Notice how nasty the band and the back of the case/pushers/crown are. This watch was loved, hopefully not to death. But, experience says, if they are too lazy to properly clean it to present it for sale, they aren't likely to have ever sent it in for service in the last 10-15 years like they should have.
  11. If anyone is curious, take admin's numbers, and try and figure out for themselves what comparable hosting would cost over at Havenco.com. (Although they don't exactly have a package that big...) And the site still wouldn't be 'safe' there, due to potential issues of copyright.
  12. I don't really do anything that isn't "unobtainable" vintage... so, I don't have a Noob, or MBK. And can't rightly compare it against any "named" Rep. It is not the same as a Gen, in that the retaining lip is continuous around the case, and the click is a long (1.5") wire going half way around the bezel to around 5, starting from a hole at about 10:45. The Gen would have a wider lip with indent and hole around 1 with a short click wire extending to 12. Yup, that's the watch. Probably not going to be the band though.
  13. Actually, depending on the size of your wrist, and how active you are, the crown can get a LOT of wear, ... And no matter how good the plate or "wrap" or even "fill", it's gonna wear off eventually, making it an obvious rep, unless it's an old "Golden Egg". I would stick to SS, unless you know how to plate metal yourself.
  14. That ugly dial sure does need it.
  15. Funny how that happens, no? Do yourself a favor though, look up "timeholders" on the 'bay' and buy it... lot's cheaper shipping...
  16. Do it, it'll be fun. ummm... don't want to mention the unmentionable... or nearly invisible as it were... needless to say, your ideas were probably anticipated with this particular homage.
  17. I have one of these from a different seller. The case is nice. No markings inside or out. It has a smallish Chinese or NK, tight functioning, jeweled automatic, with HACK and QUICKSET. Bezel isn't the sharpest, and a little loose, the pearl is freakishly round and pronounced. The bracelet on mine is not the bracelet on the one pictured with this auction, but has crappy fliplock and non-fuctional extension (ie always extended, not engineered to actually close). For reasons completely my own, I welded directly on the caseback with a MIG welder, burning a nice hole through it's thin skin, close to where the mainspring was located, which lightly smoked the inside of the crystal, and melted the plastic spacer a bit. However, the movement is a little trooper, and is still running happily within seconds per day. The crystal, although the cyclops is a bit under powered, has a nice surprise waiting for you though...
  18. That is the funniest [censored] ever. We only want clear concise descriptions of products, so no one gets confused about what they are buying. Don't go buying any incorrect repli-noobs. Only buy the original Noobmariner. Call your ripoff-mariner a noob and there will be consequences! Don't be stealin' TTK's IP and ruining his brand's image with inferior product now.... NOT a jab at you TTK, I hope you're enlightened enough to appreciate the irony.
  19. DONE. Challenge regular members to match $10 or upgrade.
  20. Sorry V, Monty was born in London, although his father came from Ireland and he considered himself Irish. I keeping with the general theory, he pulled himself up by his own bootstraps, gallant and uncompromising during the first world war, and distinguished himself further with his restraint during the "Irish rebellion" (his heritage a probable factor here), which led to his other earlier leadership positions in other uprisings. Although his ever growing arrogance was a bit much for most of his superiors, in keeping with the theory, he was steadily promoted or assigned positions above his grade. Against the theory, his "a--holitude" ended up costing him in the end. His views and general attitude generated much negative publicity after he retired, and this kept him from being elevated to Earl, which would have been a mighty fine lifetime achievement for the black sheep scion of a poor Irish bishop.
  21. Actually, the Beev may have gotten lost and not have been able to find his way back to this thread again... I am sure he will say thanks once he figures out how to find out where he has been, or how to use the search facilities...
  22. Agreed. You pretty much want to see the date "fill up" the cyclops. How's the font on the dw?
  23. Well, since everyone else is jumping on... The pic SSS posted is my favorite, because is shows detail of the obvious, that everyone will catch, but hides the flaw that really bugs me. The indice at 9 is crooked.
  24. Thanks for the info Andy. Thanks for making me watch the retards with the power nailer George... Let's see drop it three times, then take three or four swings to actually set off the charge (show off the REPLOMAT while trying) ... stupid, clumsy AND weak. Live in a trailer that cost less than watch yer dumber than you buddies think it is... uhuh.
