  1. I love fine pens and have bought some rep pens over time, here's the rundown:

ST Dupont FP, black with gold cap from Neil - cosmetically superb, nice and heavy weight, the nib is super bold, scratchy, doesn't write well.

MB Le Grand BP, black and silver from Narikaa - cosmetically superb, takes generic refills only, the steel tip just came off, unglued, I have to glue it back on. I enjoy writing using this pen because of its large size and thickness.

MB Copernicus RB, black and silver from Neil - cosmetically wonderful, super heavy and big, takes gen refills. My favorite pen, thanks Neil!

MB Copernicus FP, black and silver from Neil - beautiful pen, writes very well for a rep FP, I gave it as a Christmas present 2005, I may have to get one of these.

MB Fitzgerald FP from WackoBirdKeeper (RWI forum) - cosmetically terrible, many flaws in the finish, a huge chunk of black paint came off the pen, yuck. Surprisingly writes well.

MB Boheme RB, silver from Sash - cosmetically nice, does not weigh enough, feels a bit plasticky. Takes gen refills, so writes well.

The one thing that happens to these pens is, the black finish wears off the threads and shows the brass underneath, happens to all of them.

Also, the MB star on the tops of these pens is NEVER rendered well, a giveaway flaw, I'm afraid.

  2. Hi, I've been a fan of the blue TT Sub for awhile, haven't found one with a nice dark blue-like-gen dial and bezel insert though. The blue is always too light and bright, especially in sunlight. I know the gen blue is very hard to match but, why don't the rep makers go dark on the blue dial and bezel insert?

The blue TT Sub you show from Josh's site - such a prettty dark, almost black blue, look how it works with the gold - absolutely gorgeous.

Sadly, I'm sure it's the lighting he used for the shot, I'd bet the blue is much brighter, I'd ask him about that. If it's like the pic, I want one, it's beautiful.

  3. Great advice, CC.

As for loosening & tightening the crown, using a slow and careful touch is the key.

When screwing down the crown, I first turn it counter-clockwise while applying gentle but firm presure until I feel the threads "seat" themselves into the tube, then I carefully screw it down clockwise.

I also occasionally apply a drop of fine machine oil to the crown stem when pulled out to keep those thread nice & lubed.

  4. Yep, I thought it might be Jake. He is un-f**king believable, I saw him in concert at the Indy Uke Festival 3 years ago. He does interpretations of everything from Jimi Hendrix to Bach. I can't even describe it, what he can do with a ukulele. Very nice guy, extremely modest and approachable. My hero.

I've been taking uke lessons for about 4 years now, my teacher knows Jake personally.

  5. A watch like this can be ordered from a company that supplies corporate novelties - award plaques, pens, key fobs, mouse pads, coffe mugs with company logo. You get the idea.

A few years ago I was asked to come up with a watch similar to this with my employer's logo and a safety slogan on the dial. It was to be an award for employees working safely without an accident. I chose a style exactly like your dad's but all SS, with the dark blue face. It was going to look pretty sharp but upper management decided on an all gold one with gold dial, it ended up looking very conservative, nothing special. Each one cost about $95 I think.

  6. Hey Andreww, I know what you are going through. I don't have any specific stories to tell, but I hae to agree with you, my local post office and carriers are pretty incompetent.

Every time I have to go to the PO to claim my watch after they try to deliver and I'm not home, it takes about 15 minutes for them to locate the package. The view behind the counter is quite open, and I watch the clerk go from one pile of packages to another, randomly pulling out a package here and there, shuffling around, taking sweet time. There does not seem to be any organization of unclaimed packages. I'm surprised that more packages aren't misplaced.

  7. You are welcome, mkm! I was hoping you would see this post.

My wrist is narrow and deep in cross-section, if it was wide and flat the watches would look better, I think.

It took me a long time to talk myself into buying my first Pam, I tried on the genuine 5 times and walked out of the shop each time thinking "no way".

Then I decided to test one by buying Josh's inexpensive asian Pam power reserve, and I really liked it. It makes quite the statement on the wrist, I've gotten compliments and glances (admiring I hope) from people on the street.

The Pam I'm really in love with is the 253 Regatta (last photo). It is thinner and sleeker than the power reserve, so it sits and looks better on my wrist. Very beautiful and avant garde timepiece. I wore it recently on a holiday to San Francisco, we went with another couple and every time we were at a restaurant my friends kept commenting on what a beautiful, interesting watch. Made me feel good :)
