JoeyB Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 I've preferred the Rolex GMT since I first saw it, and have had a few reps. I came to all the forums looking for a 'good' one with a Swiss movement but not the price tag. I am a member here, but spend most of my time at another site, just happened that way.
redwatch Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 Looks really great! Could you provide more details about the build? It would be a big help to others where you sourced some of the other parts (especially me! )
Cats Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 That's a beautiful watch you built there JoeyB. Vintage GMT's are still om my wishlist. Wear it well. Carpe Diem Cats
FxrAndy Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 Very nice work there, how did you make the dial/waterslide i am sure people here (me) would be interested if you could print more!!! A member here is working on a red sub right now using waterslides
JoeyB Posted June 15, 2010 Author Report Posted June 15, 2010 Very nice work there, how did you make the dial/waterslide i am sure people here (me) would be interested if you could print more!!! A member here is working on a red sub right now using waterslides It takes some searching on the internet, and finding the dial you want. Because these are old many have been refinished and are not always 'right'. The Rolex Crown is wrong, or the printing. Then once you have it, and you might need several pics, you have to make it round. Most pictures are not 'dead on', so they have a slight 'oval' to them. I used my photo program to do it all, move things around, and printed at 2400dpi which is the max my machine will do. I bought one sheet, 8
FxrAndy Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 I have played with waterslide printing my self but my printer (samsung) is not really up to the job, good work there!
mastergod Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 I have played with waterslide printing my self but my printer (samsung) is not really up to the job, good work there! Hi guys, excellent thread, this @FxrAndy, please be invited to share pics of faulty waterslide dials if you have them - others peoples experimentation is super interesting regardless of the end result! @JoeyB: Great project!!!!!! Congratulations and thanks for sharing! MG
alligoat Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 Very nice job! I like the red datewheel, it's cool that the 2893-2 worked out for you and the dial itself is quite an accomplishment. Congrats on an excellent job.
freddy333 Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 Originally, I thought it was just a photo artifact, but now that I see these new pics, I think you may need to reduce the height of the crystal (only the beveled section of the crystal should stand proud of the insert). On my watch, I reduced the crystal height by grinding it on sandpaper to the desired height. Then I cemented the crystal onto the case using UV cement, which makes a 100% watertight/permanent seal (you would need to literally crush & scrape the crystal off the case to remove it ).
redwatch Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 Wow Joey! Thanks for the detailed description! I can't believe that is a water slide decal dial. It looks great! So when do you want to build another one??
JoeyB Posted June 16, 2010 Author Report Posted June 16, 2010 That would make my crystal 2mm too high. I will check that out. I think that shorter, to the bevel as you said, would not only look better, but be more practical when worn. Thank You!

TeeJay Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 That's a beautiful watch, a fantastic project indeed
flex Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 Nice watch.. could you let me know where you got the datewheel? I would swap the insert with something better e.g. NDtrading or Yuki or Andy
JoeyB Posted June 16, 2010 Author Report Posted June 16, 2010 Nice watch.. could you let me know where you got the datewheel?
redwatch Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 Wow joey! You are blowing me away with this custom work! How long did it take you to create the DW, and more importantly, how difficult was it to install and center?
alligoat Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 I agree with redwatch, that's some pretty awesome custom work. Great job, Joey!
flex Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 JoeyB, your custom work is really amazing. You can find bezel insert from timeman.net Great work and I think you'are the only one that can fit a 2893-2 (I could be wrong though).
