Here's a large pic for y'all:

Not sure I see what the issue is exactly, but I am by no means a 1680 expert so I'll defer to the Vintage Rollie Guru's here :D

Hmmm, I've been away from these quizz to long to make an assumption...

But...

It's not the dial that's bothering me...it's the entire watch.

I've owned a great example of the 1680 (white) and allthough I couldn't say why, this one doesn't feel legit to me.

Maybe assembled from bits and pieces, who knows, specially the crown.

Here is what mine was looking like (with papers by the way) :black_eye:

RED, Thanks for posting the pic. I was late to a meeting. Frankly, the whole watch appears cobbled together.

Yes, I've seen that dial before as well R.

here's mine, it's a MKII

'L' in Rolex is left of center of crown

Mine currently has a 703 crown and tube

Dial is a Beyeler c. 1978

The crown on the one in question doesn't bother me- looks like a 702 crown to me.

And the dial really doesn't bother me either, but I could be wrong...

the swiss t<25 looks too close to the rehaut therefore similar to what a gen dial in a MBW case would look like. My gen dialed MBW looks like that.

Crown looks okay to me.

Stephane- What s/n range was yours?

540XXX Ubi!

Of course, crowns can be changed as dials and so on.

But again, the entire watch looks bizarre to me.

An old crown/New bracelet: than can happen too...but, but, but!

I'm liking Polexpete and mjmj's answer- trimmed dial in an MBW case.

JoJo did the same thing with the same results

LOL, this watch would have that same dastardly MBW SN- L341,xxx!

I've measured gen dials at 26.5mm and MBW dials at 26.2mm and it's amazing how removing .3mm will affect the minute markers and Swiss-T<25 like that.

This was my guess when I saw the dial. I'm guessing this guy took it on consignment.

I looked at a few photos of genuine and on every one, the "Swiss <25 is further up from the rehault. Also this one looks like the minute markers run underneath the rehault. I know it's a different watch, but i was just looking at my genuine 16610, and on it the hash marks stop before the edge of the rehault.

.

"1970's. The serial number has been rubbed down so we are unaware of the exact production date". Could this be a little Clue as to possibly a rep or aftermarket case? :whistling:

Hard to tell from the pic, but it looks gen to me. A MBW has a too high rehaut, this seems OK here. Markers are good and all visible.

Here a gen with same crown I had here a few years ago:

What is obvious is that it's hard to tell if a Rolex is gen or not these days.

Reading the comments here from very valuable Rolex lovers, the opinion goes from gen to MBW :black_eye:

As I trust our community's opinions more than any other's, I'm stating: who knows and can be sure at 100%? :whistling:

Now, good point for sure, is that none of us would erase a serial on a base rep, franken or genuine!

I am no expert but can't help noticing that the 'tail' of the letter "R" is completely different on the suspect watch than it is on Nanuq's excellent photos of his gen. Is it possible that this is a gen dial? I say no - I too am very suspicious of this piece and in my limited experience if you are unsure of anything then walk away!

Notice the position of the "L" under the coronet. Your "L" is more to the center. It is too far to the left IMO.
