dutchguy2 Posted April 25, 2013 Report Posted April 25, 2013 I started a 1016 build. It is the second time I am building a 1016 and this time it should be a keeper.<br /><br />Got some parts ordered already, like Justin's bezel, TC hand set, Clark 25-22 crystal and a gen 16013 mid case.<br /><br />The case is from 1982 and will come without crystal. Now I am not sure if a plexi will fit this case since the 16013 also came as a Sapphire crystal version at some time.<br /><br />Does any one know if all 16013 cases are good for plexi? Or should I be worried that I got a Sapphir version?<br /><br /><br /><br />
tomhorn Posted April 25, 2013 Report Posted April 25, 2013 (edited) 16013 never came with sapphire. Was always a plexi. 16233 was the sapphire version of that case. I am in the process of the same build (16014 case and a gen 25-22). What did you do for a dial? That is my sticking point right now. Hoping whoppy's dial project comes together as planned. Otherwise am probably looking at NDT's. Edited April 25, 2013 by tomhorn
alligoat Posted April 25, 2013 Report Posted April 25, 2013 Are these Yuki dials any good?http://www.yukiwatch.com/catalog/item/8677844/9637047.htmI know for a while they weren't, but this one looks ok to me.
lhooq Posted April 26, 2013 Report Posted April 26, 2013 Are these Yuki dials any good?http://www.yukiwatch.com/catalog/item/8677844/9637047.htm I know for a while they weren't, but this one looks ok to me. M, this one's not very good. It's got balloon-like numerals that are set too far into the dial, and the text isn't proportioned properly. There's a dial on eBay right now that's considerably better (despite odd fonts), and selling for $110. Also, 162xx is a completely different case from 16xxx.
dutchguy2 Posted April 26, 2013 Author Report Posted April 26, 2013 Do you have a link to that dial on ebay? Can't find it!<br /><br />Cheers
tomhorn Posted April 26, 2013 Report Posted April 26, 2013 I assume he's talking about this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rolex-1016-EXPLORER-Jet-Black-Dial-/251265013242?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item3a808fd5fa
CptTripps Posted April 26, 2013 Report Posted April 26, 2013 I love that this one is $2,900...I've seen complete watches go for $4K a few times recently. Is there something special about this one? eBay Item: 350746243948
alligoat Posted April 26, 2013 Report Posted April 26, 2013 The one for $110 from Mahand is interesting. He obviously has a connection for dials from the far east. Also sells a good bit of Tudor watches.
lhooq Posted April 26, 2013 Report Posted April 26, 2013 tomhorn/alligoat: Yes, that's the one. It's not a terrific dial (ingod44 would be better if you didn't need an 'Explorer'), but it has fewer sins than the last Yuki batch. Some of the fonts remind me of the MBW 1016 dials, actually, so I do wonder... Mr. Doug: What's special about that dial is that it's a gilt. Worth $2900? Slightly possible, if you had a correct-year 1016 with a totally trashed dial that needed replacement. But not likely.
RANGER Posted April 27, 2013 Report Posted April 27, 2013 The one for $110 from Mahand is interesting. He obviously has a connection for dials from the far east. Also sells a good bit of Tudor watches. I'll bet he's also the source of all those horrific red-all-over Tudor Rangers that are always around on eBay.
walra01 Posted April 27, 2013 Report Posted April 27, 2013 I bought one from Ebay Seller Mahand1. I've built a franken explorer based on Gen 1601 case + case back Gen 1570 movement Gen 1570 hands JMB Bezel Gen crown + tube Mahand1 Explorer dial Con : Dial OD is too small : 27.5 mm (whereas gen dials are 28mm). So if you look good you'll see .2mm space between dial and inner case rim Pro : No alteration to the 1570 movements (height cannon pinion and same gear) http://s543.photobucket.com/user/walra01/media/DSC_0814.jpg.html http://s543.photobucket.com/user/walra01/media/DSC_0777.jpg.html http://s543.photobucket.com/user/walra01/media/DSC_0791.jpg.html http://s543.photobucket.com/user/walra01/media/DSC_0812.jpg.html http://s543.photobucket.com/user/walra01/media/DSC_0804.jpg.html http://s543.photobucket.com/user/walra01/media/DSC_0791.jpg.html http://s543.photobucket.com/user/walra01/media/DSC_0777.jpg.html http://s543.photobucket.com/user/walra01/media/DSC_0768.jpg.html http://s543.photobucket.com/user/walra01/media/DSC_0766_zpsccf63633.jpg.html

walra01 Posted April 27, 2013 Report Posted April 27, 2013 Preacher62, looks like yours is 28mm whereas mine is 27.5mm. What case did you use?
automatico Posted April 27, 2013 Report Posted April 27, 2013 "What's special about that dial is that it's a gilt. Worth $2900? Slightly possible, if you had a correct-year 1016 with a totally trashed dial that needed replacement. I have bought a couple from him. Good, not great." The one on eBay looks better overall (to me) than the Yuki dial except it is a bit too 'creamy'. What kills the Yuki dial is the imploding numbers...but the next one may be different. Buying aftmkt dials is a roll of the dice.
preacher62 Posted April 28, 2013 Report Posted April 28, 2013 (edited) Preacher62, looks like yours is 28mm whereas mine is 27.5mm. What case did you use? This is the case that jmb has sold which is sort of unique in that it is made for the 2824. He also drilled it and made the bezel.I think it makes a pretty fair 1016. Nothing is right, as has been demonstrated by the great authority, LHOOQ, except a gen 1016 case. Therefore, you will have one that is too thin or too thick. the 1016 case is somewhere in between your 1600 case and a 16200 case.%5BIMG%5Dhttp://i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/jumpope/My 1016/100_3436.jpg%5BIMG%5Dhttp://i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/jumpope/My 1016/1016onbackondesk-resized.jpg%5BIMG%5Dhttp://i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/jumpope/My 1016/1016onbackonrock-resized.jpgI do not understand why our pics are not showing up but rather the links. walra01 Posted April 28, 2013 Report Posted April 28, 2013 Preacher62 : I can't see a pic at all when I double-click, hope mine do.... Thanks for the info! I considered buying a Yuki dial but I think they are yellowish but has the right diameter. (28mm) NDT 1016 dials are all 29mm but I don't like the non gilt dials. And too pricy !! Ingod44 dials are too small 26,5mm but to me look very good. for long time they are in back order Mahand1 dials are 27,5mm and look very sharp and clean, with a loup you can see the lume has been applied/refinished in a sloppy way So I can live with the Mahand1 dial for the moment, but eventually I will swap with a better one and with the right diameter. Somebody here used a 1018 case for building a franken Explorer
quaresma7 Posted April 28, 2013 Report Posted April 28, 2013 Very interesting thread, I'm in the middle of a 1016 proyect with JMB aftermarket 16200 case, TC Hands and GS Crystal. I still have my doubts about dial..I love Ingod gilt dial but it too small, and mahand1 doesn't convice me...
CptTripps Posted April 28, 2013 Report Posted April 28, 2013 This is one I got from TrustyTime. I replaced the movement with a Swiss ETA I pulled from a vintage Rado. After drilling out the lug holes and aging the dial and crystal, I was in business. The dial was real nice, and the whole watch with an Asian ETA clone is only $20 more than a lot of the dials I've seen. Just a thought. ..
1680 Posted April 28, 2013 Report Posted April 28, 2013 Guys, forget the mahandi dials from eBay, they are a tiny bit too small, it doesn't fit my case (others had no problems with it, depends on the case you use). And the print color is a bit off, it's not white but rather a creamy color, that is ok for a vintage one but not for me. If someone wants it send me a pn...

I originally had this dial in a jmb case, a month or two ago I scored a 16013 case and the mahand dial was almost too big. I drilled out the lugholes out as well and have to admit it makes a very nice 1016.
1680 Posted April 28, 2013 Report Posted April 28, 2013 Oh and a sidenote: the mahand dials are NOT refinished gen dial or reprints on gen plates!
dutchguy2 Posted April 28, 2013 Author Report Posted April 28, 2013 So this manand dial will fit a 16013 case?
dutchguy2 Posted April 28, 2013 Author Report Posted April 28, 2013 It fit mine. We need a picture LOL. No serious, would love to see it fitted in a case.
