Recommended Posts

Well I succumbed to the need to take a closer look at the updated Cartel 5513 and ordered one from Josh. http://www.pf-818.com/-p-9481.html

At long last we can say goodbye to to the stubby crown guards, a good excuse for me start another build. Here we go :)

The annoying "Stailesssteel" and 1665 model designation between the lugs. I will sand these out to leave a brushed finish.

That's a great build, thanks for sharing. Where did you source that dial and hands?

Are the holes as good as they look, And that dial of yours is rather tasty, whats the source please

The lug holes don't look too bad, however I will be drilling them out to 1.2mm. I'll be fitting the WSO gen-spec 2mm spring bars, they have polished end spring tips which is a nice touch.

Picked up the dial next door:
http://www.repgeek.com/showthread.php?t=260313
The lume actually had a slightly cool tint to it, not really vintage, so I stained it with tea and did the same to the Yuki handset to match. I also gave the dial a light dusting of matt varnish.

I was't happy with my first attempt at staining the lume on the hands, so had another bash at them.

My budget build says hi!

photo%2010_zpsmroqdh0x.jpg

I like your new crown guards and a very nice tutorial.

Mine was a budget 5513- trim the cgs inside and out, drill the lugholes and install a 702 crown and tube. Movement is the DG2813 which is holding up well, but you still can't lengthen those stubby guards.

Another tip for stubby crown guards is to file down the saddle between them. Not by much though or the crown will come in contact with the bezel. Doing this will also require countersinking and re-tapping the case thread before fitting the tube.

Ah yes, the "optical inch" ;)

Case shaping completed with diamond files and varying grades of wet&dry abrasive paper. Reduced the height of the lugs slightly from the top and refinished with an abrasive pad. Brushed out the spelling mistakes between the lugs too, leaving a hint of the engraving behind. Drilled and countersunk the case to accept an Athaya 702 crown and tube. I used a combination on 1.3 mm drill bit and a 6.3 mm M3-90 degree countersinking bore for this. Finished off by giving the shiny bits of the case a polish. On to the shots :)

Nice pictorial mate.

Love to see the watch gettin more and more authentic!

Btw those cgs look awsome!

Thanks :) The Cartel CGs have become less hassle with the new midcase. However, being based on the 1665 the lugs need work to get them closer to the 5513. One step forward two steps back!

Couple of options for the bezel insert, l'll either go for the bleached Yuki or gen service. I'm still waiting for the Yuki pearl to arrive, which thanks to FedEx is on a bit of an odyssey and may never been seen again. Anyhow, here are the shots with the bezel insert options, not fitted just placed.

Nice work mate, I presume you mixed some hands about?, looks super:)

I'm still confused about these cases though... My STAILESS steel 16** doesn't have that ring machined around the top of case.

(has exactly the same serial no)

Great job mate, keep up the good work!

It has started activating my 5513-genes... I'm starting to feel a lack of missing the Sub that outlasted them all. Interesting, as I've always felt that either vintage-vintage or modern.

/V

Thanks. Can't a beat a 5513 in the collection.

Cheers. Hands are from Yuki, can be a bit hit and miss though. The machined grove around the top of the case is a leftover from the 1665 model to facilitate a rubber sealing ring (there wasn't one). Strange indeed if your 1665 engraved version doesn't have it.

Fantastic thread... and that's looking amazing. I have to say I prefer the service insert to the Yuki when looking at the overall finish/patina to the watch. It looks more like a dutifully serviced vintage than an all original survivor :-)
