Slightly better than the Roger Moore rubbish, but it fell far short of Connery's worst 60's & early 70's efforts (excusing his Never Say Never Again mistake). While I think Craig's a great actor, the rest of this flick made me pine for George Lazenby. Wow, I couldn't disagree more. And I said so in my film review...(I do freelance film critique). As you can tell, I thought it promised much in the future, though the much over-used term "reboot of the series" gives me hives. And when I say "promised much", I mean it in terms of watches too. To be honest, as much as I would be happy to watch a Bond film, I always prefered the novels to the movies, and, as much as the gadgets and girls were fun, they were at times so untrue to Fleming's novels, that they barely deserved the same titles. I absolutley loved how the Living Daylights was just a short story (the opening part up to Bond taking the shot), and from the movie, I liked how they managed to then cobble up a film to follow it. Wow, I couldn't disagree more. And I said so in my film review...(I do freelance film critique). Good for us. I'm not a fan of the idea of 'reboots' of series, but, given my feelings about Bond novels/movies, I'm hoping that they'll take the oportunity to re-shoot the movies in a way which is more true to the spirit of what Fleming wrote. Live and Let Die without the Diamond Cutting-wheeled Super Magnetic Submariner (uber Anti-Milguass?) that replaced his Hamilton Pulsar? Don't get me started on the satellite linked, ticker tape spewing, blast cord backed Seikos...... The only thing dumber than those were the generic dart gun watch and the Omegas that followed. And Fossils. REBOOTING THE TIMELINE??? Allowing that with Sum of All Fears is why I quit reading Tom Clancy. Of course, it doesn't matter that much with Bond. He's just a bit of good fun. All the nonsense about being too young and then too busy 4 times before he finally took the job was just a cover story to avoid those damn gadget watches... Later, Brosnan had more gadgets coming out of his Omegas than ever before... Umm... Roger Moore had one no name that sprayed cyanide coated pellets, depleted uranium armor piercing rounds, etc, in Octopussy... AND his ticker tape Seiko Memory Bank watch was used to blow the rocket pad exhaust grate to save his ass in Moonraker... (reverse order) .... BEFORE the exploding key chain... I got to see it in 87 and again in 88. It is definitely on my list for a third go around, the next time I make it to Korea. The building is 60+3 stories (they used to call it DLI63, now I think they call it 63City) and the entire exterior of the building is covered in real 24K Gold Leaf. You'll love it. Oh, and I did read Dava's book, because it happened to be on one of my favorite subjects... however, she does have a way with words, and if I hadn't already been in the pursuit of building the ultimate (at least my ultimate) chronometer "REP", I probably could have gotten away with blaming her for my insane pastime... Yipes, actually that sounds tacky and a half. I'm glad Koreans are having fun and building skyscrapers, but this gold leaf whimsy reminds me of the Brunei Royal Family. Have you seen them in Westernised clothing? Horrid. Simply horrid. And here is a Brunei princeling taking his bride off to their honeymoon. Solid gold-leaf Rolls... Say what you want about our Queen, unimaginative, dull, sedate, but give me her hearse-like, black, 50-year-old Daimlers any day to this gaudy Eastern tat. Thanks for the IMAX info though! If I go to Seoul, I'll check it out. I think you're being tactful. That's a kind way of saying Sobel writes pleasant historical fluff pieces, like Robert K. Massie's "Nicholas & Alexandra". Fantastic, but a little novelised and therefore, not serious or scholarly. Love reading her, but it's not hardcore History like I intend on writing. That's why I'm going to be poor and unknown... guanaco Posted October 12, 2007 Report Share Posted October 12, 2007 (edited) When I was a kid I always loved the way watches looked, I didn't have knowledge about brands, complications, etc. Just liked the way that big blob of metal looked which could tell time! <--- Anyways my 1st watch was a Casio, a horrible one which I loved, but my dad told me to get used to wearing a watch with a crappy price tag so if I destroyed it or lost it it would be $20 lost, not a more expensive one... So I wore the watch for 3 years until I left it at our locker room at school and some guys ruined it, I told my dad, and got me a SS Analog, a Swatch, not bad, it was pretty sweet. Finally when I reached 9th grade my dad took my Swatch and gave me a Gen. Omega Speedy (the so called 'moon-watch') . I was so friggin' happy! Honestly, I almost cried... sweeeeeeet!!! And actually, DLI63 is quite an amazing piece of architecture. Under varying conditions... it can nearly disappear in a blue sky, provide an amazing display of gold against the dusk, and reflect the last rays of the day with major dramatic effect. (A very elegant middle finger to "the North" when it was built, and at the time, the tallest skyscraper in asia, now just the 3d tallest in Seoul.) Actually, I did misspeak earlier, a little.. nearly the entire exterior is gold-leafed save the windows, of which, most are gold sputtered, hot new tech at the time... (Or as it's called in Canada, Grade 9) So about 15-16 years old, if in North America. Your point still stands though. BTW, I was given a Cartier Tank (black face, lizard strap) when I was oh, 13/14. My favourite watch of all time, next to my Christmas Mickey. It wasn't a surprise. I asked for it, being a lifelong WIS. EDIT: Guanaco is originally from El Salvador, if memory serves. As you know, Central and South American kids from good families get spoilt far more than American kids at the same age. In Brazil, parents don't give fancy watches, but I know upper-middle class 11 year-olds who get Vespas and those clunky Sand Vehicles, like THAT. This is very well-stated, and well-analysed, but it still doesn't take away from the fact that it's a humongous building in gold-leaf. For the record, I also hate the Gherkin building in London. Basically, my architectural edifice tastes entered hibernation shortly after the Chrysler building went up in Manhattan. They're too far from Fleming's novels for me to enjoy them. Indeed, Dalton was a fantastic Bond. Untill Brosnan, he was my favorite, but, I felt Brosnan played the character closer to how Fleming wrote him. I thought Daniel Craig played the character well in Casino Royale, but visually, he just didn't fit Fleming's description of Bond. Invictas I can understand. Swatches are kitschy. But Fossils are ugly, and wannabe cool watches for people without imaginations. There. I said it. Hope they go into rehab because of my words. I offer an aside to your insult VB. I've gotten TONS of compliments for my Fossil I wear. I've never seen anyone else with it. SS case and SS links strap, with a very simple dial. No numbers, only hack marks on the 5s. Pretty simply... except for the fact that the dial changes from black to red every 2 seconds. It's taken some serious beating in the last 5 years I've had it, it's been to 100+ feet while diving and tons of various construction projects as well as field work. I've seen some of the watch shots you've put up on here... some of which are borderline gaudy, and have been WAAAY too large for your wrist (besides the fact that it's been a men's watch ) So there!
