  1. No doubt these cases and movements are far superiour to even the best reps...I have one very close to yours Bazz, and can't compare it to any rep, in fact, it is the one watch I wear into the AD, it always freaks them out. No one has ever seen this type of 6497/8, and the case is the same one used in some very high end watches. Looks great on that brown croc, I put mine on a blue shark to match the hands...nice pictures by the way.
  2. Morpheus: I've seen an agent punch through a concrete wall. Men have emptied entire clips at them and hit nothing but air, yet their strength and their speed are still based in a world that is built on rules. Because of that, they will never be as strong or as fast as you can be.
  3. I wish this wasn't true,,,,why, why, why do you want to wear a calculator on your wrist? One of my favorite academics and writers , Douglas Hofstadter actually has a picture of himself in his new book that really looks to be one of these casio calculator watches. Wouldn't a computer geek want people to think they could do these calculations in their head?
  4. Nice picture Bazz,,,got a blue shark for my Tourby special
  5. I'm impressed it was an automatic (probably an invicta),,,,I've met literally 100s of college professors over the years and of course the first thing I check out is the watch they are wearing, and so far the vast majority are cheap quartz, some are top selling authors who could easily afford a huge collection of nice automatic gens. My guess is that most professors do not want to look materialistic (this also explains most of their clothing). It might go back to this idea that their brain is too busy with "important" things to worry about the material world. I mean, if my socks don't match, perhaps I'm too busy unifying the four fundamental forces in physics...
  6. This is so beautiful that If I could wear only one watch, this would very likely be it. As far as the ML, I've also had a chance to look at them in person. I agree that the pictures do not do justice to these pieces. I have an AD just down the street and always bother the guy looking at the ML and the blancpains.
  7. Is it??? that movement looks incredible!! From the two ML, I would go with the gold since it looks like a better deal.
  8. The rolex is nice, but just too small IMO, either of the Maurice Lacroix's are nice but if I had the choice I think I would go with the GP Sea Hawk,,,there is something nice about this watch that I find myself going back to again and again when I see it in the various magazines. Of course,,if I had the money I would go with a Benzinger but can't really go wrong with any of these. Enjoy the decision,,,,,,
  9. Nice watch Bazz! Here is my UPO just in from Paul,,,,goes best on ice.
  10. 2 posts? (really one),,,that would worry me even if the picture looks good. I would get references, also, nothing wrong with making a lower offer,,trust me, I get them ALL the time. As long as it is polite, you can make another if it is rejected.
  11. I wish I would have posted this, the dial I'm talking about actually had a good piece of the dial actually down to the metal. I mean, who would ever wear a watch like this? nice aging I can understand, but this would have to be fixed unless the person wanted one seriously ugly watch. Hey,,,just noticed my 1,000 post
  12. I just saw a vintage rolex dial on timezone (I think) it was a dial with lots of damage, about 15 or 20% was totally removed and it was going for about 2500 (usd). I mean, so much of it would be new, it really begs the question if it is really vintage anymore or a replica? I mean, is there really something special about the actual metal? What if 60% of the dial needed repair? At some point it would be a replica.
  13. It is interesting that we have to test this, I mean, If I bought a watch from an AD and they told me it was sapphire, it would never cross my mind it wasn't sapphire. Unfortunately, because various dealers told us so many watches had sapphire when it was only mineral,,,suddenly, we have to test for it. Perhaps the best way to know if it really is sapphire is to buy it from someone you can trust.
  14. I would get the hamiton used,,,that way you can try it out and if you get a good deal you can sell it for what you paid. I like the hamitons, but the lack of AR and the undecorated movement made me sell them in the end. I had that Philip 7750 also, nice but so much reflection you really can't see the dial and it also didn't have a decorated movement. Actually, right now on the poor man's watch forum, there is a Plasmir milgraph going for less than 600, this will sell in the next few hours I bet. I would pick it up if I had the money laying around. http://www.pmwf.com/cgi-bin/SalesForum/web...ames;read=72643
  15. It's interesting that a cal dial will actually make the watch seem smaller. I've taken the exact same case but switched the dial and it is a really big effect, I'm not sure why. However, this isn't a bad thing as it helps make the 47 a bit more wearable, imo.
  16. I almost sold this,,,and then came to my senses....
  17. At least one day a week I feel like wearing the Cal dial, so I have two, a 45mm and a 47mm. I went with Davidsen for both and ordered each with no markings at all. With no Panerai marking, these homages are being posted more and more on gen forums, I imagine it is driving some people crazy. There is also the 1938a from RWC to consider. Sort of a contraversial watch as it also gets posted on the gen forums, but gets labled as a rep by some paneresti. Also, it goes for a bit more, you can pick on up for about 600 (usd) used which I actually think isn't a bad deal. The case quality is really good and there are no lug screw issues and it isn't a screw down crown, so no worries there but the lum is terrible.
  18. Just talk with a couple that had their whole extended family there for a week, they just missed the storm and got out on friday. They had nothing but great things to say about the beaches and the diving was supposed to be great. Besides people pushing some version of Dominican viagra on them all the time, everything was great.
  19. of course, tops are optional, in fact, I remember one lady that, while laying in the sun, would only wear a strategically place feather! I'm still not sure how that thing stayed in place.... I thought the beaches were beautiful, and while I didn
  20. I have two friends that just spent a week in Punta Cana, I see what they have to say today. I've been there twice and really liked it, but I spend all my time at an "all inclusive" resort drinking and walking the beaches, so never did too much beyond the resort. I'm always the only person on the beach with a watch, so about ten times a day people ask what time is it?
  21. They must have assumed that all the 80s fans are now making lots of money....from the "sold outs" I guess they were on to something. Guess I'll be waiting for the DVD too...
  22. This is good news as I've always wanted to see the band with Dave, but I just can't do it unless the ticket prices are decent. I mean, this is sort of the "used" version of the band, they are all pretty old, one might even say, vintage. Condition has to be around 75% with lots of scatches from 20 years,,,,and probably not keeping great time. I'm actually into it, but will not pay anything crazy for tickets.
  23. Sounds like an easy fix as I had something very similar (The Zigmeister helped me out as I recall). It is the automatic winding gears that are messed up making the rotor engage while you wind it. Actually, all you would have to do is switch this with your other non-working movement. After the rotor is off of both, remove the auto winding bridges (I'll see if I can find the link for this), there should be two black screws holding it in, but you have to be careful not to unscrew something else. It will come off as a single part. You should be able to just switch this part and put back the rotor and should be good.
