  1. If anyone has a spare dial (any version) for the 3717, I'm looking for one too. Oh, and an AR crystal and... oh, bugger. Ubi's awoken my dormant modding gene.
  2. I'll be honest though, the crown and tube are going to repair my UPO, and the hands may well go there too.
  3. Please ignore my last post. I've found these on Cousins:
  4. With mine, I'll be modding it slightly differently. I'll probably try for a gen dial/hands (for the lume) and crown/tube. I'll also go for AR, if it's not too costly, as my UPO has K2222 AR on it and it makes a huge difference if you compare it to Gen. I'm also going to fit a crown/tube to my UPO as it's completely threaded now. Does anyone in the US fancy picking me up a crown/tube combo for both a 42 and 45? Cousins don't seem to stock them.
  5. Ubi, are these mods the sort of thing I should do on my 42mm when it arrives? Not yet.
  6. Oddly enough, try Amazon.com. Usually, they're around $170-$200, but occasionally, they'll dip towards the $150 mark. Last year, they were $145 all over Amazon.
  7. A UPO will eventually need a new crown/tube. If you want to look at the quality of a rep v gen of the same price, compare a SOSF rep (a stand-out high-ender) to a similar-priced gen, like a Monster, the SOSF will be better as it's a 28k Swiss movement, AR Sapphire, etc, whereas the Monster just has better lume. The reason for this is that our reps are tax-free and have no advertising/marketing costs to recoup. If you treat a rep price as a trade price, then the Gen starts to prove to be better. The Noobmariner is another build-quality stand-out. That quality for that price is unparalleled in the gen world. However, once again, you're looking at a lack of warranty, no water-resistance guarantee, shitty lume ...
  8. Glowing writing is nothing special. If the dial is screen-printed, it's simple enough. Here are some of my unfaked lumeshots: Gen Seiko Rep Panerai with not-so-good lume: Rep IWC with ok lume:
  9. For a headless server in a datacentre, most likely, yes. As a desktop OS, not a chance. For a desktop, Mac all the way. Mac OSX is the most advanced desktop operating system available. Obviously, for games, I'd be on Windows, but these days most gamers are on consoles, and Microsoft cleverly switched their attention there already. Linux is best for Netbooks and embedded devices, and as my job is managing Linux servers, I'd have to say it's damned good for servers, too. My brother uses Mythbuntu to run his HTPC, whereas I use a Mac Mini. The reason for our varied choices? Budget, plain and simple.
  10. Mac OSX is based on FreeBSD Userland on top of a Mach kernel. No Linux was used. FreeBSD is a Unix, like Linux, which is where the confusion arises. You think Linux is solid? Take a look at FreeBSD. Two-year uptimes are the norm.
  11. Anyone who thinks this is aimed at Microsoft is missing the point. Microsoft have shown a demonstrable lack of interest in the Netbook sector, as have Apple. The target for this OS is Ubuntu. Google want to leverage netbooks to put more adverts in front of people, as that is their business. If they do so by providing a slicker and more friendly method than Ubuntu, then it's a victory on both sides. Microsoft have nothing to fear and nothing to gain by even entering this market as it's a market that has stated very loudly that they do not want to spend money, something Microsoft likes its customers to do. Apple has nothing to fear because they have the iPhone at one end and the MacBook at the other. The middle ground is of no interest to them, either. Apple have shown what they consider a Netbook: the not-cheap MacBook Air. Google are the only people in any position to make any money out of Netbooks by using them as an advertising vector. Couple cloud-based Google Apps with their Chrome browser on top of a Linux kernel and they have something they can do cheaply and efficiently with little effort.
  12. Isn't it only 64-bit Windows that can access more than 3GB?
  13. [censored] me off? I believe we should have gone into Iran instead or Iraq. You've read me wrongly.
  14. I also base my foreign policy on By-Tor's favourite band's opinion. Although what if Yes reform and tell you to invade Korea?
  15. I wasn't aware Iran was an ally.
  16. Blu-tack. I was planning on using Rodico, but the Blu-tack was right there.
  17. Click to embiggen Another in my latest photo session.
  18. Click to embiggen. Photo straight off the camera, using Photoshop Raw conversion. No other retouching (as can be seem by the dirt and stuff.) The watch was a cheapo from Silix back in the day, with a replacement Ajoe movement and K2222 AR on a replacement sapphire donated by Ubiquitous way back when. Strap from V.
