  1. About 3 years ago, I won a gen Omega Geneve, in an ebay auction, with a bunch of other items. It was a tired and sorry old thing, but amazingly ran, albeit with some keyless works probs, and a badly damaged dial, that no mother could love! I gave it the kiss of life, movement wise, a service, and revived the day/date change, and there it has sat in the "work in progress" box! I have spotted a couple of suitable dials over the past year or so, but they have gone past $100, and a tight ass like me, won't go to those extremes! So a local guy posts a dial which will work, @$9 to start. I PM him, ( have bought a lot of stuff from him over the years) and ask for his BIN price! He wants $100, so I elect to go to auction. Tonight ...success http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...N:IT&ih=017 The interesting part of this auction, which I won with a snipe bid, is the "bidder 1 " bids. Is this a shill? or another bidder who has little idea of the process? I could care less... $30 with freight, now makes this a project for early completion... I may even make this a daily beater, or alternatively ebay it with an expected $500- $1000 return, or just offer it to my market stall watch buyers at around $1k! It does however show the advantage of time and research of ones needs, and the use of a snipe programme to bid. ( I use auction Sentry) Will post some shots of the completed project in the next week or 2, along with a shot of it's current sorry state. Offshore
  2. @sql, My sincere condolences. 3 years ago, we lost our 17yo "son" a black mini poodle, "Charlie" I had to make the hard decision as well... not easy ..I know only too well. (actually I probably put it off a bit too long) Just live on with all the wonderful memories, and at least realise in your own heart, that your decision, was for your best friends' ultimate comfort. Be happy that your mate, is in a better place. Offshore
  3. Indeed, a genVrep dilemma! I say, that Wiki's have their own life, and their heart beats only at the rate of contribution, (Although I have not fully researched the Wiki phenomenon.) With no source, or link to the input, I see that little negative impact can occur. After all, isn't the mine of info available here, a direct result of contributions from far more accountable sources? Articles/posts or relevant information from these pages, may be linked anyway, so for mine, a contribution of info, for the greater good, may well be better, than links to posts, which just make us more "mainstream". A question we all need to ponder! Offshore
  4. If you can measure it either on the case back, or if it is in a groove in the case, measure the ID. Then measure the ring thickness from the old ring. PM me, I will flick you a couple close! Offshore
  5. And welcome and thanks jdm! Nice to see some recognising the value of the information we accumulate here. We look forward to your input. Offshore
  6. Corgi, There is a VERY good reason why we don't have a delete posts option! And why even the admin team in general, make posts invisible, but do not delete them, as the content remains accessable to the team. It is one of our options to be able to check back, if a deal goes south. If the poster could delete what he said, historical info would be lost! If anyone needs a post deleted, contact admin, we will do with it what we feel is best. Offshore
  7. @freddy. Wouldn't i love to get one of those, may have to build one! The freight for that to Oz would be 3 times its cost! offshore
  8. KB, Of course I am up for one...whatever design is finally decided! Offshore
  9. Recently I have been experimenting with my lighting! Over 5+ years of repairing, I have worked with, a) a fluro circular tube, outside a magnifying lens, b ) natural light from a close window, and c) a 100w globe, ceiling suspended, in the centre of the room.. Maybe I am getting older, but the eyes don't seem to be working as well, so I did some research, and came to a few conclusions on lighting my work area. Firstly my magnifying ring, gives just adequate light for basic work, but detailed work needs better levels of lighting. So I purchased a twin tube fluro "shop light" and invested in two daylight - white light tubes for it. This is suspended about 1M above my work area. I also purchased a halogen desk light which I can position for extra lighting for detail work. And now I can see again! The other area I have been concerned about, since I began repairing, is the height I am working at. I sometimes find with less precise jobs, that I have unconsciously picked up the watch or movement in my left hand, and then braced that hand, to get the job closer to my eyes. Wrong!! Following a recent post here about this subject, I went to my local "storage solutions" store, and picked up a 4 drawer plastic moulded set of drawers. They had the advantage of being very rigid, and had locking drawers, (so the drawers didn
  10. Sure someones' not building a Frankengen? Offshore
  11. And here is ample evidence of the reasons for the rules! I hereby invoke rules #6 and #18. Topic closed. Not censorship... sensible shi* Offshore
  12. PM admin, for your current status. Some time back, we lost our auto update ability. As I understand it, we seperated the newer supporters, from the older, for accounting and upgrade purposes. Some are "supporter" some are RWG supporter" Purely cosmetic....just to keep the bean counters happy Offshore
  13. There is a great little booklet on crowns, tubes, all the various styles and sizes, methods of fitting tubes to case etc. It is another gem by Henry Fried, and it is only around $6-7 Can't give you the exact title (mine is on loan) but it contains a wealth of info on this subject. Got mine from ebay from memory " my wifes Bookstore??" Worth hunting...many answers, and a bunch of data info. O/S
  14. Well my friend...we all know....these things ARE... soft drugs O/S
  15. S**T Doc, That is what I have to do...................................to change a battery! Offshore
  16. ferrariz, Note my highlight.... could also read "may not" I have bought in excess of 1000 watches in to Oz, (most gen), and have NEVER had a package opened, or challenged. FYI. Offshore
  17. OK, From one, who would NEVER contemplate taking on this sort of a project...(too old...eyes not the best....DT's from alcohol abuse )........ a couple of thoughts/questions. Is there a correlation between the cost of the media, and the ability to apply it? ie, Do you think "much better" product would produce a major improvement? I know you guys haven't seen/used the top grade media, but would a better product give you a big increase in results? I realise this is all subjective, but any thoughts are interesting. Also, what degree of "experience" as in working on tiny areas, be it mechanical, or in this instance "painting", do you think applies to this undertaking? I'm trying here to get some sort of an understanding of the level of result, from a person who works on watches daily, as against a "weekend' hobbyist! And do you think that an artistic bent, or training would assist? Much? As said.....subjective.... however the responses would be "interesting". Offhsore
  18. Someone just PM'd me, and told me not to push the cruise control button O/S
  19. Bill, One of our long term, but not recent members, DLGates, is somewhere in your neck of the woods. (Close to Galveston Bay??) If you could encourage Dave along, you would find a wealth of knowledge, and a down right AAA person. I will shoot him a PM and point him at this thread, hope his health, and a contact would get him there. He also enjoys a scotch or two! Offshore
  20. pete, GS hypo cement is a good choice, although it is more a gasket than a real glue. Bostik do a UV cured cement that is a dream to work with and wipes clean with acetone once cured. However it is in fairly large quantity and is pricey due to the volume. You can get other UV cements from the bay, various supply houses have them for under $10 but I don't have experience with them. Offshore
  21. I got a new set of Wiper Blades for my car. I think they might be too big because they hang over the edges a little, but I don't care. They work great and I would have to say that they are the only blades I have ever had that I actually like to watch working. Call me crazy, but lately I have been driving around non-stop with them on. I've even been pulled over and the cop asked to go for a ride so he could watch them. They were outrageously expensive, but safety is my main concern and like I said, they work great. Let me know if you would like a pair for your car. Offshore
  22. UJ, IMHO, the only person I would let near that Rx dial is Ziggy! You may have to wait a while, and stand in a bit of a queue, but it will be worth it. Will let our more knowleageable Rx wWIS chime in for the other answers.(See Kruz has beaten me to the punch-Again !) Offshore PS Welcome aboard, glad to have you with us!
  23. Brighten up team! I'm back from the storeroom, with a HUGE selection of watch crystals. These are MG, domed-1mm thick. not 20 or 30 as is usual, this is a box of 181 crystals! That is 1 crystal of each size 170->350mm in 1mm increments. Now these normally sell at +$2 each, and I wholesale these kits for around $150- $200. Here is your opportunity, will start this at $50...under my cost! Freight included.(and thats +$20 to the US!) Will post this an auction real soon! Let's run it for 48 hours from now! I'll work out the actual finish time a liitle later!! A great set for the aspiring repairer. Offshore
