Sam, Welcome, and Hello, We have given consideration to publishing an explanatory list of acronyms, and "buzz words", however the guys here just keep makin' 'em up. I'm sure after a few weeks, it will all be just like a native language to you as well. Offshore

I just dropped in to the Poor Mans Watch forum (pmwf) Watch Works section, to refresh my memory on some advice they had there on re installing hands. It is interesting that there have been a number of new "how to" articles presented since I last visited, so I thought I would advise those here, especially our newer members, that this is a great source for some of the more basic repair jobs. I won't publish a link, as they don't like it much but if you Google pmwf or Poor Mans Watch Forum, and surf around until you find the specific section, you will find it well worth the effort. And don't forget to add it to your favourites for reference. offshore

As Corgi said, Why go to a Replicacentre type site, when we already have trusted dealers? I realise product may be a little cheaper, but the downside of poor quality, the potential to be scammed, and having to deal with unknown factors and suppliers, would surely take up any price variance....No? offshore

Joe, plaifender, I own a couple, purchasd fom the 'bay a couple of years back. This brand was an ongoing discussion at the old RWG a few years ago... actually if you search here, we may even have some discussion in the archives. (Think i was buying them around U$30-45 at the time) long story short. German company, purchased by "new' owners ( probably Asian) still assembled in Germany, and maybe even some Euro bits, but mainly "Asian" components. Enough cost % to still reach the Euro or German made requirements. As an aside, 1 that I have is a part skeleton, with a manual wind. The movement is just silky to the touch when winding, it brings back sweet memories of my early manual wind watches as a kid.... almost (Idid say almost) sensual to the touch! Offshore PS. Silixs won't be repped, will be the real deal.

@Chronus, I'm sure you are probably correct there. This was raised to us as a question in Admin, and seeing as we had no rules covering it, we sought the reaction of the membership. When no negative feedback came, as I said, if the members are happy, then the admin team becomes almost ecstatic Just doin' our job Offshore

@ DV, Hmmmm, glad we cleared that one up! Really, this is exactly what this place is for, to broaden everyones knowledge. I honestly learn SO much here every day! The real reason this is my home. @rp, Had never heard of that before, but it makes perfect sense. However I would be seriously worried about a sport diver, who needed to run stops below 30' Worried for his longevity!! If the bezel "locks off" below 10m, then there is no opportunity for it to give a wrong reading (be moved or knocked) until one gets back into the deco area. BTW, ( for the non divers) the reason a bezel only will turn one way, is to prevent a false recording (to little) bottom time, if it is knocked. So the worst scenario, is you are calculating your stops on a reading which is wrong, but, wrong in the "safe" sense,it is an overeading ie, you will only end up doing too much deco..... and you can never do to much deco! (unless you are running short of air ) Yeh thanks, I thought it was a shame too... however the option offered was a bit less palatable.. if the necrosis got worse, the doctors would remove both my arms, at the shoulder joint! No contest...stop blowing bubbles Offshore

@TWP, Not a problem. As you see there is little .. to no feedback, so essentially the members are happy with it. If so... we are to... just have to keep a weather eye out.... as they say Offshore

Stephane, Recently I purchased a tired old Omega Geneve, in an estate auction for $15. A polish, service, and new dial/O rings etc, at a total cost of $25, ( plus my labour to service and polish.... Lets be charitable, and say $250) ...voila, bloody nice Omega for under $300.... AND GENUINE. Concurrently there are threads about " Top ten reps" and this one, which I read with more than passing interest. Like a lot of (older) members, I have increasingly stopped buying reps, and searched for genuines. And with the ever increasing prices, I could not be tempted to a rep again. I think we have a huge number of different types of people here collecting. Some are here enlarging their experience/ expertise, in modding and repair. Some are singularly brand fascinated, especially about how close a rep can become to a gen. Others truly enjoy constructing Frankenwatches. We have photographers, collectors, repair experts, in fact a veritable Horological " Melting Pot" And a more knowlegable group cannot be found.... anywhere. Which is why I hang around, like a big sponge, soaking up the knowledge. Still beats me though, when I see these guys paying $1k for ANYTHING that resembles a rep... geese, they must have IT bad.... even worse than me Offshore

@repaustria... Correct! ( Or close to) At the start of a dive,(just as you leave the surface) the bezel is set with zero on the minute hand. @others interested... some diving theory/ practice. Having reached maximum depth, and commencing ascent, a note is taken of the elapsed time. There are also ascent rates to be followed et al. When arriving at the decompression stop/s, the calculations, ( hopefully already pre worked) are then undertaken. One may have a schedule of say 3 minutes @ 20' and 15 minutes @ 10'. Divers choice then. Personally I always used to reset my bezel to time each stop.( As they are critical to not experiencing unbeleivable pain!!) ( Or dying) Most divers will do "extra" deco, to try to circumvent "the bends" Aside from the time factor, a number of other factors come in to play. Height above sea level. Fresh or salt water. Gas breathed during dive. Gas breathed during deco. Which set of deco tables a diver is working to. Divers physical condition.....etc etc. As a former diving instructor, involved in a large level of excesively deep dives!!! Watches ( and depth gauges) were our means to stay alive. I quit diving in 1981, due to a disease known as bone necrosis, or "the silent bends" ( Insufficient or poorly calculated deco stops!) At that time there was an ongoing development of "Decompression Meters" which purportedly would alleviate the need to time dives. Unfortunately they were not all that accurate, and could not compile information for multiple dives. (Residual Nitrogen) My understanding is that, in later years, Dive Computers, have come to prominence, which can calculate most of these needs. Personally, I would feel much more comfortable, if the diver had a good working knowledge of decompresion requirements... just in case of an equipment failure. It is a bit like navigation at sea, today we have a new generation of mariners going to sea, with this wonderful unit called a GPS. And amazing equipment it is...... however, should it break down, or the vessel experience total power failure, it would be comforting to know that someone on board was aware of the principles of coastal, and cellestial navigation. Alternatively it becomes....."Want to sail from NY to Miami?... Just keep America on the right side!!" Just reread this dissetation.... Sh*t I sound like an old fart... reminiscing. and maybe so. Take it for what it's worth, I would welcome input from other "younger" divers. Offshore FWIW, I was an active commitee member of the Cave Divers Association here, also on the technical commitee of the local Underwater Federation, and worked for a number of years as a professional diver.

I beleive I need to ask a question here. In the past , group buys have been the reserve of members, who negotiate a price with a dealer , for a given quantity, and discount, and then put the offer to the members. In this instance , we are looking more at a situation, where a dealer is getting great market intelligence (nothing wrong with that) and then arranging to offer a price, based on potential quantities.( and popular product) This subject has been discussed in admin, we have no rules in place for it, and really just want to get a feeling from the member group, as to how this sits with them. Obviously the watches don't yet exist "in stock", so the dealer is literally saying, "Tell me what you want, make a commitment, and I will tell you how much you can have it for!" As I see it, at this time there is no offer, as there is no price... you could be offered 90% discount, but until a price is known.. it becomes 90% of nothing. This is not to denigrate this approach, merely to question it. So what say the member group? Should dealers offer group buys? or should this be something reserved for keen members to arrange? Hmmmm, I always thought EL adored gen Zeniths, and dropped all his dough on big boobs -
Mate, ebay don't give a fling f**k if 90% of their watches listed are fakes. They are too concerned with revenue. Have you ever tried to have an auction pulled? It's worse than pulling teeth! I have had lengthy discussions with them re copyright and associated matters. The final result.. ALWAYS... is " Oh well it's not up to us to prove anything one way or the other" (Just give us the bucks) And beleive me, the only reason PP, (their associate co) becomes so aggrieved at reps, has little to do with illegal activity, but a LOT to do, with the fact that their main revenue stream is the short term money market. Imagine the millions$$ they "seize" for up to 6 months at a time! ( and interest earned) Nice work if you can get it... especially when you have been given unregulated carte blanche, to the banking system. And the start of any problems we have had at this site, have come from a lot closer to home, than either of the two afforementioned! Offshore

Oh what a crazy world we live in! http://www.theage.com.au/news/business/cla...9276809292.html The Whirlpool forum discussed, is one of Australias biggest... started as a discussion group on ISP's and grew. Strangely, I had some knowledge of the software company... a company I worked for purchased the software, and threw it out after 6 months of agony... it was S**T! So it's a good thing we here have an anonymous facade...elst we might suffer a legal attack from an aggrieved "collector" All in jest guys. Offshore

My take on it as well Ken! Actually I enjoy some of their stunts, but this was over the top IMHO. Almost a pity they didn't get within a few yards of Bush... 'cos I don't think the US protection team would have been as forgiving as the Aussie security.... and they do shoot very straight Offshore

@ Bobm, I remember when I 1st joined the forums, (@TRC), this (acronym) idea also came to me. I spent quite some weeks compiling such a list, and forwarded it to the admin. Ther were some questions as to my interpretations, and finally it never saw the light of day. However, by that time, I had answered all my own queries anyway (I also spent months compiling a FAQ) which is around here somewhere I think, and is a compilation, of FAQ's put together by a number of members. It is amazing when one revisits these things, how dated they become, and need constant updating and attention.... which we tend to "put off" as we are too "busy". Our "Links" section here is another case in point.... something I and others put many hours in to, but it really needs a makeover again. So I say to you, and any others who are inclined, by all means construct and submit these types of info packages, and your admin will consider creating an area, or pinning them. Or as smilingbear has said, we can get the RWiki section going, (when time allows ).... actually, until it was pointed out, I wasn't even aware it existed.... but it is all about time.... or lack thereof. @ryannon, Yeh, it's just part of the same package, isn't it? @predfan, I am moving this to "Off Topic" so it can run it's race! I'm with you . Offshore

Just be a very wonderful and doting husband, and go and buy her the Cartier! And make sure it is a crappy rep version! Offshore -
Yep, this BS goes on ALL the time. I have had 3 negatives due to this........ the only safe way is to definetly have a mail stating the exact shipping cost, before the auction completes. Just recently I had a guy quote me to ship a box of parts @ U$ 15.00. When I got the invoice it was for U$50, for post. When I complained he said, "Thats what it is going to cost" I refused to pay, and received another negative.... still fighting that one. It's just utter BS... but then we know all about ebay and their ethics and policies. Offshore
