In another thread I commented on what I beleive to be a "myth"... that duct tape, will open all watches. And received a basically contradictory answer from one of our close friends here who also has a great working knowledge of the "game" So I am starting a thread, which we will break up into seperate parts as needs be, to allow discussion/ debate on a range of questions, I'm sure we all have. No, or few rules to start.... we'll make them up as we go along. So right now... Just one.. Be civil, and discuss/debate in a friendly manner. All posts of a flaming or inciteful nature, WILL be deleted. And stay On Topic! So let's kick this off. Does duct tape, sticky balls, always work for you? Offshore

Oh, my friend, I don't deny that properly using "sticky tape" or "balls" will open MOST watches, most of the time, but gilt edged guaranteed, they won't open, all watches, all of the time! Probably just depends on how much time each person has to waste, trying all the different methods, knows all the tricks, and has all the tools necessary to cross reference. I will always bow to the experts' knowledge around here... it is really why I hang around... this place is just the greatest learning curve, with info from a large range of very knowledgeable WIS. So this prompts me to start another thread, in GD, which I will call..." Legend, Fact or Myth" I call on all members, from newb, to WIS, to post their question, have it debated.... and given we reach a definitive answer to it, we will arrange to place the answer as a "sticky" in the appropriate section. We may even have to turn to polls here, ( and god I hate polls), if we need to "vote" on the proper answer. So here is your opportunity people,.... what is that one question you have always really needed to have answered... but were always afraid to ask? And any aggressive flaming type answers WILL be deleted. I will kick it off with this one.... " Does duct tape, sticky balls, always work for you" ( and include my response, and the answers so far received. let's just see where this leads us! Offshore

Seriously, I don't think we can perpetuate this ball of tape/ sticky ball/suction tool myth any longer. Sure these methods work on watches... That were not well sealed in the 1st place.... probably by a sticky ball! However, anyone who spends time opening multiple watches, will find that even hand tools, Jaxa style, Bergeon/Rolex tool etc, sometimes still will not crack the casing. Then the big guns are needed... a screw down vice style case back opener, with the CORRECT dies...... and even then, some won't open. Thats when we call our man Nanug... complete with 4WD, chainsaw, and sledgehammer. But I am serious, I have sat and shaken my head at the multiple posts I have seen... swearing to the efficiency of sticky balls et al. "A poor craftsman blames his tools" Offshore

Waterproof Watch Testers
offshore replied to TJGladeRaider's topic in Technical and helpful information
Is a chrono less waterproof? Than what? If you are asking if a chrono has more chance of water ingress, the answer is YES. It has potential failure points at the crown stem, the two pusher stems, the rear seal, and the crystal seal. That's 5! ( POTENTIAL failure points.) Now a Swiss company Mido, pioneered a watch that was the most "Waterproof" It had a solid back, entry to the mechanism is via the crystal only, and it has just a single crown/stem. So, only 2 potential failure points! ( No it's not a chrono) However, if the correct, designed and serviced seals, are not in place, and the watch has not been pressure tested, it probably will "leak" Just as the chrono will. So, a well designed and serviced watch, should not leak. Unfortunately they still do. You did ask about the difference between screw down, and pusher style chronos. IF, correctly designed O ring seals are used on pusher style chrono stems, there is no more chance of them leaking, than screw down styles. Screw downs, are using a different sealing principle. ( Again, if the correct design/style is being used.) Confusing,.... better beleive it... and the examples I have used are for genuine watches, designed for these activities, by watchmakers... not by some backyard operator, who thought putting an O ring there would be a good idea. @fitmic, It can probably be pulled in to a fair bit better than that.... but is it worth the time/cost? Gee my daily beater (mech) is 3 minutes/day slow, and I just reset each morning! I have managed to get some quartz movements ( Swiss ) to 1-2 seconds a month. Offshore

elwopo, I can assure you he's still around, I guess it's his summer now, so he would be taking advantage of that boat of his. Nice of you to notice his abscence, however. We can do with as many members who care, as we can get. Offshore

offshore replied to Admin's topic in General Discussion
Agreed Bob, Another top job by KB ( Glad he's taken the baton back BTW ) However I don't know that he is yet on all 8 cylinders... think there may still be the odd missfire on 1 from time to time Offshore -
Movement review - A7750, running seconds at "3"
offshore replied to RWG Technical's topic in General Discussion
Ziggy, It is this sort of review/post, that makes me proud of this place, and happy that I am a member of RWG. Imagine the quality info that those who aren't members here miss. Not even the gen forums have this quality of input. Congrats my friend, you've done us proud again. Offshore -
@emuozz, Great review, thanks for your contribution! With a nick like that, we can only hope you do come from downunder! ( although your local time says No.) And with these presentation abilities, why do we only now see such a wonderful post. I note you were member 521? Aside from all that, maybe now, with the additional info you have had added here, from our WIS group, you could " flesh" this review out, and make it a full blown review of the PP Nautilus (or Genta contibutions) range. Again, thanks, it is so pleasing to see new contributors. Offshore

Euno, My thoughts are with you and your family my friend. Offshore

@lanikai, Hopefully @Ry, The link is only visible to VIP's. All other members should PM one of the admin team for this info! As I am off for a 3 day break in a couple of hours, it may be better to go to admin, or one of the other mods, as I would hate someone to think I was ignoring them. For everyones info, we had enough in kitty for a couple of months server fees. then when the original PP account was suspended, the kitty became defunct. Hopefully in 6 months these funds will be returned! offshore

@ ryannon Maybe our non VIP members just don't comprehend the extra value they gain from going VIP? There is a 1 month option available at not great cost, would be good to see a few have a look around "inside", then they will understand the true value of this place! Offshore

Obviously, some can't find the Forum rules section! So I reprint here, just a couple of our more moderate rules for your information. 6] - Anything-discussions regarding politics and/or religion in anyway will be closed or deleted unless determined to be pertinent by admins/mods. 7] - Be nice to each other and respect the RWG admin team and moderators. No personal attacks. In particular, malicious comments that insult others based on race, gender, religion, nationality, or sexual preference will not be tolerated. The fastest way to get removed from the community is to turn a discussion into a personal confrontation. 18] - RWG is NOT a place for free speech. We are all for free speech and we rarly censor out members, but ultimately this is a private community and we decide what is allowed to post and not. Not for one moment, am I saying, that any of these have been abused.... Yet. Just IMHO, I see this thread as being a contrived catalyst to a flamefest. And the best way to put out a fire, is to extinguish the smouldering embers. All have been given ample information now! Offshore
-
Maybe it is now time to point out, that on the top (Green) toolbar, 2nd from the left, there is an area called, "Forum rules" It may be well worth a few taking time to re-read, (or read! this section.) We are all for open discussion, but we are not here to moderate flamefests, or posts brokered to incite same. There are countless other fora for this type of debate. This is a watch forum. If you need to seriously discuss other matters, do so in the correct arena. Offshore.

Welcome aboard Bugs! Seems like you are a "new'.. but old repmaniac. Some good info here, and remember the newbs welcome... " The search button is your friend" Offshore

Giormani/all, This was a watch, I purchased in my early days of collecting. So it could be as much as 5-6 yo, although again my thoughts are 3-4yo. My memory of this purchase is not so good, (I will actually go back to old RWG/TRC times and see if I can refresh it!) However, I KNOW for sure it was purchased as an ETA!! And I am almost certain it was from EL. I know it was purchased around the time I had my infamous dust up with the delectable Natalie Lee, as this was purchased to replace a similar model that went "missing" back then. I do know I paid close to U$200 ( the figure of U$185 keeps popping in to my head) Like a lot of others, it arrived, was sized, worn once or twice, and found its way in to my box, there to sit for these years. As I didn't have a Rolex tool back then, it was never opened, and I don't beleive it ever was, so giormani would be the 1st to see inside it. Definetly never serviced ( shit it was an ETA.... wouldn't need it ) Also please all understand, that at one time I had something like 80 reps, so it is difficult to keep an actual/factual track of all of them, unless one runs spreadsheets, and all that sort of stuff, which is not my go. Any email records, are long since gone in computer crashes or replacements. Will be interested to see a final consensus on this one ( and will of course come to an amicable arrangement with giormani, if need be).... hell this could rewrite the LWL thread ( heaven forbid).... just predate what we already know!! Offshore PS, Just sitting here now, trying to date this thing. I do remember wearing it one day at the Sydney Boat Show in July 2003, and I don't think it was very old then. EDIT to add, This was definetly the bracelet it came with!

Is the price fixed? Is it available from more than one source? and finally.... does it come in black?

Working on that!

OK, I beleive I have asked enough times,...... to keep this thread on track. Again and again, we go off on tangents. If you are that upset about this subject, both you and Slay, go and start your own thread about it, and as long as it remains 'On Topic" it will remain alive. If not however, ALL those stepping over the boundaries will be warned and finally banned. However this thread is now closed... for the simple reason that you guys cannot obey the rules and stay On Topic. Offshore

FxrAndy, Just wish I the ability to say that! The sooner people here realise that a lack of buyers, will reflect the sentiments of US, the buying public.... (for heavens sake, they're our $$, until we foolishly give them away)..... the sooner the sellers will get the message that these practices are not acceptable! I have yet to see a businessman not react to a downturn in sales.... one way or the other. Offshore All, I am sorry to go Off Topic!! I am doing exactly what I am attempting to stop on another thread! So, on this one at least... back to a discussion on a new B & R!
