  1. I understand you are posting this in the context of the Rolex sub-forum, but one reason is probably that a majority of "GENS" out there are based on ETA movements. Therefore it is not surprising the factories emulate ETA movements first and foremost. Take a Panerai based 6497 movement based watch. If you want a "Gen" time setting feel there you go. Visual Accuracy should be #1 priority.
  2. R, you already know my thoughts on the subject.
  3. Mike, just saw the post. Nice. I "think" we live in/near the same city, would love to check it out in person. There is talk of a GTG in our area soon.
  4. Parnis has been putting out some decent "Homages" lately. Nice. Wear it well and welcome to RWG...
  5. Yep, looks like he got flagged down for trying to sell the REP Explorer...
  6. @robertk, that is a great looking watch @Justasgood, great minds think a like, nice diver! Today:
  7. True, true! Also, "The Seller needs to sell him/herself to the buyer as well". (Although in this case, everything appeared on the up & up. There should be no shame in refusing sales to someone who does give you the warm and fuzzy) "Buy the Seller, Choose the Buyer"
  8. Might just be another modded NDT??? There is slightly more damage to the large chrono seconds hand (just going off the pics) and although the missing paint on the "T" in Unit is similar, it looks like Ubi's was missing slightly more paint. Perhaps Rolexmaniac88 who bought Ubi's will chime in...
  9. A WM9 Sub would probably be the "most likely to survive" kind of rep. If you want to meet in the middle balancing Vanity and Gen Reliability, don't discount Victorinox Swiss Army, they are being market heavily in the fashion community (Nordstrom, GQ) and certain trade mag's (Wired). Not to mention they get mentioned in "Watch Times Buyers Guide" every year. Add to it "reliable" stop-watch functions, you may have something there....
  10. I would agree. (Rolex missed the mark with their over sized designs as of late -- too long on the drawing board). I have been seeing more and more understated, but quality, watches in my travels. Seems Hamilton's, Seiko DJ Clones, etc, might be the new black.... This is making it hard to justify gutting 160x, 150x's for their movements...
  11. Rep or Gen? An (affordable) Gen suggestion would be a Seiko Diver. (I have had one for 15 years that saw off road motorcycle ADV riding, surfing, diving, etc) Search Google/eBay for "Seiko Prospex" Another option would be something like a Victorinox Swiss Army chronograph.
  12. Going down a similar road. I just gave up manually using files. I will be switching to the Dremel. What Dremel bits did you use?
  13. I agree with dolphinfriendly here. Very pleased no one was hurt. On a more serious note, I lost a friend on a motorcycle who was struck by a lady texting on her cell phone. That said-- while you are relatively safe inside your "cage" of a car, what if there were a motorcycle or cyclist present?
  14. I am a big Scotch drinker as well. Just killed off a Glenlivet 18yr old last night. Adding a few drops of water to a Scotch after your initial tasting will actually allow the Scotch to "open". Similar to a wine. I usually grab and squeeze an ice cube and drip 3 drops of water into my glass. At the bar, one way to order is to ask for a "Water Back" which the bartender should give you a small glass of water that you can "add to taste". For my "daily" Scotch's (12yr olds) I will actually just drop ONE Ice Cube in the glass with about 1.5 ~ 2 Ounces.
  15. Welcome to the club. Did you go with the 2801 or 6497 movement kit?
  16. Not so much a 3rd time zone as an on the fly quick adjust GMT Master II's with adjustable bezels allow for the following: 1.) As described above, Leave the Bezel in the home position, and set the two time zones. 2.) Leave the watch in 24hr mode, and just use the bezel to track the second time zone -- 3.) If you are tracking something, or yourself, with the 24 hour hand and you are "moving through" time zones, you can turn the bezel to account for your movement across the zones.
  17. To put your mind at ease, to TEST your watch to MAKE SURE it is not defective do the following: 1.) Set all hands to MIDNIGHT. All hands should be stacked pointing straight up @ 12/24. 2.) With the crown pulled ALL the way out to time setting position, start rotating the hands. When it is NOON 12:00 PM (regular hands) the 24hr hand should be at 12 on the OUTER BEZEL (straight down) When it is MIDNIGHT ALL THE HANDS should be stacked at 12/24. If the above test worked, the WATCH IS WORKING AS IT SHOULD.
  18. To answer this specific question, see my other post. With the GMT Master II's you do NOT need to rotate the bezel. With the GMT II it sort of gave the option for a 3rd time zone "on the fly". Take for example my Explorer II GMT. The Bezel does NOT turn, but I can set it for 2 time zones like I described above. In the pic below of my watch, the local time is 8:11PM, and in the 2nd time zone I am tracking it is 16:11 (4:11 PM)
  19. To show the 2nd time you want: If it is MIDNIGHT in your local time zone, and current GMT time you want to see -6hrs, set the RED hand to 18:00. That will allow you to leave the bezel in the home position. When you want to know what time it is in GMT land, look at the RED hand in reference to the outer bezel, and the standard minute hand. If it reads, for example, 16:10 it is 4:10 PM in GMT. If you are 6hrs ahead the regular hands should be 10:10 PM.
