  1. Grab red's Snowflake for me while you're there! I'll even throw in a Catherine Zeta-Jones 'Entrapment' catsuit (lightly soiled).
  2. R: Is that, like, the original Pelagos?
  3. Leaves me feeling empty inside. From afar it looks like a Datejust with a cluttered dial. I'll wait until they stick that movement in a sports case, and turn it into a more appropriately utilitarian watch.
  4. I'm surprised at how much I like the Pelagos. The Black Bay is pleasant enough, but I would have preferred a more consistent look, rather than its homage a la carte. That red crown tube is just plain nutty. The Pelagos, on the other hand... Love the titanium case, the pointed CGs, and the lumed bezel. If they make it in blue, I am a guaranteed buyer.
  5. mjmj: I want YOU to wear a 5512!
  6. You can buy a 45-minute 7734 for $250 RIGHT NOW on eBay.
  7. You should be able to pluck the coronet off of any dial from a dress Rolex sized 34mm and up. Possibly even smaller, but go to the AD and take a look before buying a donor dial from, say, a Ladies Datejust. If you really want to be accurate to the Daytona, then you'll want a Singer coronet, which has a distinctive shape and a uniquely open "mouth". Unfortunately, most of the Datejust and OP dials I've seen on sale (for $100 and less) are Beyelers, which have smaller openings on their coronets. They're still improvements over DW's part, though.
  8. Thanks, all! krpster: Thanks for the interior shots! It initially comes off as too "Sean John", but I actually like the white PloProf. Strangely, I think it could look more anonymous than the regular PloProf, sort of like when light bulbs are attached to the side of a tank, and it seems to disappear into the horizon. Upon reading that last sentence, I wonder if anyone who didn't see that documentary on camouflage will have any idea of what I'm talking about... It's worth repeating that the build quality on this rep is exceptional. Hearing the "snrrick" of the diver's extension locking in place gave me goose bumps. And a friend was impressed by the vanilla scent and overall quality of the straps. red and Adeo: Thanks, but all the pictures in this thread were actually taken with my old G9--still my macro heavy lifter! I've read about using some add-on lenses for the G1X for macro work, but I'll wait to see what the pros can do, first. Jkay: NEX-7 was heavily recommended to me, but I'm faithful to Canon. Marketing must love me.

    DW 6238

I did a quick eyeball estimate of the 6238 bezel way back when, but it never got to the lathing stage. If I recall correctly, fabricating a correctly-sized 6238 bezel would have resulted in a "tumah" looking far worse than ever. Of course, jmb later showed just how finely you can shave lugs, as evidenced on my FAP 6239. The way I see it, the main difficulty in a 6238 build would be finding a good dial for it. The best available is the one from the old 7750-powered cartel reps. We know the Phong dials are lacking, and DW's own take on the silver 6238 was one big disappointment. I'd love to see one of our aftermarket suppliers produce a really good 6238 dial, but considering how hard they struggle to make a decent Daytona dial, that seems unlikely.
  10. The PloProf is the iconic Omega of the 1970s. It represents a time when the company was pushing watch design to the limit, rather than resting on their laurels, endlessly tweaking the bombé lugs on a Speedmaster case. The 2009 Reissue was a clever update of the old Seamaster 600, but it was also a reminder both of Omega's past glories and its current case of writer's block. I remember being excited when I first heard about the PloProf being repped. I can't even recall how long ago that was, but out popped the V1 and it looked good--other than a few things that drove the rep community absolutely bonkers. PloProf V2 was a rare occasion when the community's main complaints were addressed (esp. the functional bezel lock), yet the PloProf seems strangely ignored when it comes to making people's Best Rep lists. Why is that? I get the feeling that there are a lot of guys who feel the same as I do: I love Omega, and I love the history behind the original Seamaster 600. I also thought the PloProf 1200 remake was a chunky yet charismatic watch. But I still couldn't buy it. I thought about ordering one just so I could keep it in my watchbox like a museum piece. I would take it out every now and then, and admire the quality of the replication. Maybe I'd pull out a loupe and examine the caseback under the light. Wearing it, on the other hand, was something I could never imagine doing on a regular basis. The forty year-old styling calls far too much attention to itself. As much as I enjoy when people notice and appreciate the watch I'm wearing, the PloProf was a bit more arch than I prefer. Luckily, I knew someone who did want a PloProf to wear. He's a watch collector, who is not into reps at all. I brought the V2 up in conversation, while talking about some of the excellent "fakes" that had been made in recent years. He expressed a lot of interest in the Plop, as he'd grown up seeing magazine advertisements for the watch and dreamed of owning one someday. I told him I'd get him one, and I did. This V2 belonged to me for all of three days, and I had the chance to photograph it on one evening. I got this one from Mary of Watch International, who was hospitalized just two days after sending me QC pics. Remarkably, it was still sent out by her husband, and arrived on schedule. She's such a trouper. My time with the PloProf ended this afternoon when I handed it over to its new owner. It was very rewarding to see his face light up once I brought the V2 out of my watch roll. Also rewarding: His cash. So let's take one spin around the PloProf, and marvel at the fantastic detail work. It really is everything it was cracked up to be, and I really can't wear it without feeling a bit silly. Congratulations if you can, as it is one impressive hunk of stainless steel. Unfortunately, I forgot to take shots of the blue lume.
  11. As offshore said, Watchco. I've dealt with them a couple of times, and have no complaints--other than the price! But I didn't know where else I could find a No-Date Seamaster 300 dial, so to Australia I went.
  12. Crunching the column wheel beats cracking the knuckles, I suppose!
  13. A salute to the meeting that just won't end:
  14. I thought about getting an X1000 a while back, but decided the money would be better spent on a 6635 Big Logo bracelet. In all seriousness, I'd never looked at an X10 before, though I'm reading a lot about its macro capabilities. I'm more of a Canon guy, and the previous, small-sensor cameras in the G lineup (G7-G12) are also excellent at macro, and able to take shots of subjects that almost touch the lens. The large-sensor G1X is unable to do proper macro shooting for reasons I leave to the more hardcore camera guys. I dare not summarize the threads on dpreview, because it would just confirm that I have no idea what I'm talking about!
  15. Thanks! Incidentally, the PloProf is only briefly in my possession as I bought it for a friend. I've always been curious about this rep, but never bought one myself, since I had a feeling I'd never be able to wear it regularly. It's great to finally experience one up close, as the quality really is everything it was cracked up to be. Still wouldn't wear one in public, though!
  16. Thanks, B! Unfortunately, a minimum range of 20cm means you won't be seeing too many G1X shots on RWG. Spectacular low-light performance, though: I might be able to get a similar shot on the G9 with a tripod, but freehand? No way.
  17. First W/C with the new camera.
  18. Thanks, R. I think it looks nice, but I find the whole iPhone retro thing leaves me feeling empty inside.
  19. More faux retro junk, courtey of the iphone camera...
  20. Must... Kill... The Queen... Hey! Save your Jedi mind tricks on ChiMan, instead!
  21. Hey, the Toyota Crown is a great car! But, yeah, there's a reason why you don't see them outside Japan anymore. The Volkswagen Phaeton is barely alive. On the other hand, Maybach is dead again... Bloody marketing. Anyhow, since this is turning into a Seiko love-in, let me post a shot I took last week of a friend's NOS 6139-6002:
  22. Well, there's always Grand Seiko, which has been scaring the Swiss since the mid-1960s.
