I've had to "sacrifice" an additional 2671 date wheel to modify into a spacer, glue on top of existing date wheel to increase "height", then glue on the overlay. A real PITA...
It's been my experience (on watches sent to me for modding and my copy of this watch) that the bezel can usually be popped off quite easily with the thumbs. The first couple bezel rings I made I tried to make this retention a bit more positive but with security came increased rotation resistance and more often a totally frozen bezel.

If you just work on "standard" sized cases that would work. The DSSD takes the bigger one while the mid-size, Tudor 34mm, and ladies size all take another.
That's what I did to this one except I did it in the lathe. You might be able to chuck the crown in an electric drill then put a file to it while it's spinning...
