Early 70s (until 74ish) should not have Daytona written on the dial to my knowledge. There might have been (as always when it comes to vintage Rolex - most certainly has been) an overlap of dial versions, though. There are some early 4mil Daytonas with Sigma Dial around aswell as late 3mills with red writing already. I'm therefore inclined to go with LHOOQ's guess, mid-late 70s.

Amazing! Congratulations!

Thanks for the kind words guys, but unfortunately I had to sell this one , it's with a very friendly member from Canada now. I think he enjoys it as much as I did, though. Vly, concerning the pushers, I don't know for sure, but the pictures on both sites look almost identically.

Zenith El Primero 36'000VPH: Return of the Tri-Color [Gen]
wiesn089 replied to lhooq's topic in Other Brands Area
M, once again I am surprised how similar our taste in watches is . I have been eyeing one of these since the day it had been announced in Basel last year and had the pleasure of trying it on in November finally. I decided then and there that this is defintely going in my watch box one day (hopefully end of this year). Lovely review and pictures as always, thanks so much for posting! -
Great watch, congratulations! Did you have to modify the case to fit the gen 1520?
-
Jup definitely not gen.
-
Yeah, it's becoming more and more ridiculous. And no, these aren't anywhere near the quality to justify these prices. Let's hope it's not the same increase like last year (100%).

Does a gen case back fit a MBW case? I'm just wondering, the case back of my milsub project seems a little thick as well.
-
Well for projects like this, I think there's only one suitable option in North America.

As far as I know there is no gen SS black Nautilus. There was a grey one in WG (only on a leather strap) for a short period, but it has been discontinued. If you like it I wouldn't care. Very few "normal" people will know what dial colors have existed so far and those who do will either immediately be able to tell it's a rep (first thing I would want to see on a PP in the wild is the movement behind see-through caseback) or feel extremely lucky that they have finally have spotted one. Personally I like AP's Royal Oak design better. The bezel and tapisserie makes it far more interesting and sophisticated looking imo.

Father teaches daughter a lesson about facebook.

Hmmm, the only real lesson I can find is that it's perfectly fine to use a gun on things that annoy you to get rid of your anger. Not quite sure if that's a lesson I would want to teach my kids... -
Lately I was wondering if I am the only one who has a plan for his collection in the years to come (subjected to slight changes along the way of course). Let's hear what you are planning . Here's mine. All except the 5513 are gens. I'll probably try a 15300 in rep form prior to the gen 15202 to see how much I actually like the Royal Oak design (no good 15202 reps out there, that I am aware of). Most likely I will have both the Zenith and the Milsub within the next year. I will also buy the gen Daytona racing dial pretty soon as I fear it will be even harder to get and thus more expensive in the coming years. Imo it's fun to dream about future acquisitions and that it actually makes sense, because you probably get distracted less and don't buy tons of watches and lose ridiculous amounts of your hard earned "watch fund" along the way. Then again my girlfriend thinks I'm totally nuts, of course...

I agree 100%. This is by far the most knowledgable and friendly community of ANY forum I have ever been to (including those concerning other topics). I am also a member of all the other rep boards, but rarely visit them, everything I need and everyone I want to talk to is here.

Yeah, I probably lost touch with current part prices since I don't have to hunt for them on a daily basis anymore (thank god! ). Though I wouldn't mind another black sigma dial for safekeeping and better times...

Generally everything Yuki, Phong etc. sell are aftermarket parts. If you decide to build a high end 6263/6265 franken with some harder to source gen parts like the dial, bezel etc., I would highly recommend you spend some more time reading up what there is to know about vintage Cosmographs. The book "Daytona - a Legend is Born" which is also available as an iPhone app is a good starting point on this journey. There are some very good aftermarket parts, though most I know of will be a pretty easy tell for someone in the know. Here's a quick overview of what I think you have a reasonable chance to buy genuine parts for. Dial: 1000€+++ (depending on condition and version, generally the sky is the limit here) Hands: 200€++ Pushers: 200€+ Bracelet: 500€+++ (571 Endlinks - now most likely considerably more expensive due to Rolex's recent price increase for vintage parts ) 6263 bezel: 1000€+++ 6265 bezel: 600€+ Serviced V72/V726: 750€+ The more obtainable gen parts are the crystal and crown/tube, which you should be able to get for around 100€ new each. These are prices I would consider realistic and what I would, in the current market situation, buy them for.

Great watch, beautiful dial color, congratulations!

If you are talking about the Asian V23 copy movement, run, don't walk away! It's gonna be dead before you know it and impossible to service/fix. For affordable 6263/6265 builds stick to a V7750 version modified to manual wind from Spinmaster. Definitely get the seller to tell you which movement is inside, otherwise you're in danger of obtaining a really expensive paper weight.

Mike, could you elaborate why Domi's IWC were poor quality in general? What are the primary shortcomings, despite poor workmanship in some cases? As I've written above I have first hand experience, but I'm curious what has changed. Concepta told me last year that you were working on a new case, any other changes or even pictures? Btw. I contacted Nik concerning my case, still no word, I hope he'll sort things out with me as well.

Sure, no idea why I missed the date. Beautiful nonetheless.

Wow, great collection you got there! Congratulations! Exactly my taste! Love that 5512!

There are at least (!) four different versions of this bezel from various periods of time. They vary greatly in font thickness, execution and other departments. I have handled some of them and without comparison with another one from the same batch I highly doubt anyone is able to tell rep from gen. There is also the possibility that during a service or under other circumstances a gen 6263 bezel might have been exchanged for another non-screw down Daytona (they fit). Without further evidence to support your claim I don't think it would be very wise to just "trust" you. I also don't think I'm the only one starting to get tired of hearsay being labeled as the one and only truth when it comes to vintage Rolex parts. Let's face it, often not even Rolex themselves let alone many selfproclaimed expert collectors can definitely say what has been produced and/or used to service watches in the late 60s and 70s. That being said, that bezel looks pretty good, but I have also seen very good aftermarket parts from some Italian sellers at watch shows before. If it fits enjoy your watch, I know I would with that one installed. Despite the newer version MKIV replacement bezels from RSC very few people on the internet will be able to definitely tell from pictures whether your bezel is indeed genuine.

I don't want to hijack this, so I'll keep this as short as possible. I for my part will never, ever again send anything to Domi. I had him build a gen powered 3714-38 from parts mostly from Concepta and some I had to source myself (Concepta was out of gen dials, tachymeter rings and crowns then). I knew he had a lot to do, so I didn't mind when I was told 3 months waiting time. When 5 and 6 months had passed I started asking questions and insisted he should finally finish my watch as promised. End of story, while he did deliver the watch in time for a third (!) promised due date (the watch was meant to be a present 3 months before) he had scratched the dial, destroyed the crystal gasket and damaged the rep tachymeter scale. On top of that he also tried to screw me over for the exact gen tachymeter ring, which he couldn't install despite prior claims, when he deliberately didn't send it with the finished watch. When I confronted him about the damages and asked him to fix these problems, he simply told me he wouldn't work on the watch anymore and that it wasn't his problem any longer. Amazing service. At least he sent my tachymeter ring after a few emails eventually... Concepta himself was appaled by Domi's reaction and promised he would at least send me one of his newer, improved case sets when they were finished (because of the damaged gasket and the fact the tachymeter ring wouldn't fit). I haven't heard from him since. Domi has done good work on my now sold V726 6265 franken, but to be honest, that shouldn't have been too challenging since it consisted of only gen parts, which most likely fit with no problem. I understand that you are somewhat biased here, since Domi is a good friend of yours, Rosnik, but to me such behaviour is unacceptable, plain and simple. I'm not bashing Domi's work in general here, perhaps he has sorted out his problems (he obviously accepted far more work than he was able to handle at least last year), but no matter what, I will have my work done elsewhere.
