Cheers chaps. I'll try to find a cheapo that takes dremel bits. First job is to polish outer lug hole entry points to make them nice and smooth and slightly countersunk as per gen. Any tips on how to achieve this?

I want to buy a dremel. Have no idea which one to get. Also what about the cheaper tools that do the same job, any good? To anybody who uses these things on a regular basis I'd really appreciate any advice. Cheers.

I agree. I'm not interested in buying it at all. I was thinking along the lines of what might be possible with a gen tall crown 703. Do you think one of these could be modded to more resemble a 702? ie shaving that inner edge to get a more 702 look? Whilst we're on the subject, what - visually are the differences between a 702 and a 703 anyway? I know the crimped construction of the 702 has the 'sunflower' appearance but other than that the coronets (on a tall crown 703 and 702) appear the same don't they? How about the 'V' shaped grooves - same number on a 702 as a 703?

Lovely pieces, and I couldn't agree more with what freddy333 said about style vs fashion. Fashion is stupid to me as it is by definition transient and therefore shallow. Now style, that's a whole different ball game and yes, vintage rollies have it in spades. The fact that the pieces we're raving about were created during the 1950-70 period is also of no surprise. Look at the great cars that are commanding multi million pound prices now, same period of time. Come to think of it the films and music that was being made then takes some beating too! It was a purple patch for mankind.

@ Joe, do some reading then do some more reading then when you've got a few spare minutes read a bit more. Take a break then.... you've guessed it, carry on reading. All the answers are here you just have to find them. Sorry that sounds a bit like an enigma but that's exactly what building a good rep Daytona is. It depends on budget first and foremost and what elements you are prepared to compromise on because at the end of the day all reps are compromises. On the up side, IMHO the compromises are small and you can build a decent vintage Daytona for less than $1000. Enjoy the ride.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not questioning the guy's integrity, I'm sure he's a decent chap as well. I just think it's a bit rubbish of Rolex if they let the watch come back to him like that - also I'd be fuming if they took some nicely aged tritium hands off my Daytona and put those brand new looking luminova jobs on. I wonder if they gave him back the old hands?

Whilst I'm in watch mode I was wondering if an expert could help me with something I don't get. (One of the many things!). If I were to take say an old school MBW 1665 and buy myself a gen movement, would I need to change the dial aswell as the hands? I understand that eta hands won't fit a rolex movement and that makes perfect sense but I was wondering about the datewheel window? Surely the window on a dial made for an ETA movement is not in exactly the same position and the same size as the one on a gen dial? Which then prompts the question, if you wanted to fit a gen movement (assuming that's possible) what dial do you use if you don't have a gen to hand? Thanks oh great ones

I don't think it's the angle of the photo. The camera seems (I know this is guesswork) to be square on and the same fault is in both of the first two pictures.

I meant the chrono second hand. And it don't look spot on to me!
