  1. For the ever delectable Ms. Nanuq, I got the one in the foreground. Solid gold, 67 years old, and it runs like a champ.
  2. Well said. You want to stimulate the economy? How about a tax holiday for the first fiscal quarter? That's right, NO taxes taken out of your paycheck. People would go hog wild with spending and enthusiasm.
  3. If only that were true. Darwin's theory proscribes that "selection" removes the population members that are ill-fitted for survival. In our current economic climate the ones LEAST fitted for economic survival, speaking in broad terms, are those about to be bailed out for their poor choices. The ones that have paid their bills and lived within their means are the ones doing the bailing. This is reverse Darwinism, if anything. It certainly is not capitalism.
  4. Joe the Plumber for Secretary of the Treasury! He only owed $1,200 and the media reamed his conservative backside. If a Dem makes a "mistake" 100 times bigger? *crickets chirping*
  5. A guy from Alaska and a guy from Australia are driving on the ranch of the guy from Australia and the Alaskan guy says, "This is an awful small ranch." The guy from Australia doesn't think anything of it and goes on. The Alaskan says, "My ranch is so big I can leave at sunrise and it takes me all day driving to reach the other side." The guy from Australia thinks for a minute and says, "You know, I used to have a truck like that too."
  6. I've found that vintage gens are now cheaper than many reps... and prices are dropping. Example, that gorgeous Gerard-Perregaux automatic that Offshore posted a couple days ago. It was a *perfect* 60s dress watch and went for under $500.
  7. More testing has occurred, and I'm still digging my Skullcandy! I tried the Sure110 and they were sonically very close to the Sonys... a bit smoother mids but still lacking that amazing open PUNCH of the SKCs. I'm still sold on the cheapos.
  8. The saddest part is, each of these 14 children are free individuals who deserve a good life, full of opportunity and health and love. By her actions this selfish mother has condemned more than 70% of them to a hellish life. "We have single mothers because more than a million women choose to have children out of wedlock every year in America, and they do not wed or give up their babies for adoption. By their own choices, they consign their children to second-class status. Of all single mothers in America, only 6.5% are widows; 37.8% are divorced and 41.3% gave birth out of wedlock. Controlling for socioeconomic status, race, and place of residence, the strongest predictor of whether a person will end up in prison is that he was raised by a single parent. By 1996, 70% of inmates in state juvenile detention centers serving long-term sentences were raised by single mothers. Seventy-two percent of juvenile murderers and 60% of rapists come from single-parent homes. 70% of teenage births, dropouts, suicides, runaways, juvenile delinquents, and child murderers involve children raised by single mothers. Girls raised without fathers are more sexually promiscuous and more likely to end up divorced. A 1990 study showed that after controlling for single motherhood, the difference between black and white crime rates disappeared." The chapter from which this quote is taken has 138 end notes; I don't have the original sources for these facts but I can safely assume they're legitimate.
  9. Somebody got me in the last minute. I hope it went to a happy home here!
  10. Am I too late? Unfortunately these are the only group shots I've got.
  11. To play devil's advocate, how is this different than the earlier thread about drug testing people who receive government benefits?
  12. Pffffft don't listen to Ken. He's just feeling smarmy because it's 128 degrees warmer in Oz than it is up here where life happens. I don't think it's even this cold at T's place. Welcome! Enjoy your stay, consider becoming a supporter, read and learn, soak up some of the atmosphere we have going on. Just don't ask..... "who has the best Sub?"
  13. Some of them were 36mm if memory serves... perfectly acceptable size for that era of watches. Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan these look nice! Who's going first, to tell us about the quality?
  14. Good Lord, how do you survive the heat? It's 8 degrees (F) here again tonight and that's about perfect. Actually about 30 degrees too warm for good winter camping. I love the winter because if you're cold you can always warm up. But if it's too hot, you're toast. No way to cool down. No thanks!!! Here's a perfect weekend getaway for me.
  15. Did you find the amazing half-disappeared man? He's half there and the other half is dissolving into...... mist
  16. Now this is cool. Gigapan of the Inauguration
  17. WHY does that remind me of a past girlfriend?
  18. You want a bigger version of that photo? PM me your email address. Interesting fact, my friend took that photo and he says he wasn't so interested in the mountain itself, what caught his attention was the bear and moose in the foreground. They were on opposite sides of a big alder bush circling each other. If you brighten it up enough you can *just* make it out.
  19. Welcome Chriso! If it's accuracy and attention to detail you're after, you've come to the right place. There are people here who cannot sleep at night unless the corrosion on their aged seconds hand is juuuuuuust right. There are simple point-and-click collectors and then there are the ones who would rather build a good franken than own the real thing. Seriously. There's a satisfaction in saying "I built that" and putting a personal touch on it. Many of the frankens here are made from 99% real parts, painstakingly gathered over month's time. Read, read, and read some more. I think you'll like the vast knowledge base you'll find here.
  20. Horology and Democracy, in that order! C'mon up there's plenty of room!
