It's a "tell" that the movement is Asian based, not Swiss based. Since our reps use the low-beat 6497-1 (straight spokes) if they are Swiss based movements. The Asian movements are replicas of the 6497-2 hi-beat movement, hence the higher beat rate and the flared spokes on the balance wheel. Swiss 6497-2 are VERY hard to source as eubaches (stand-alone movements not in watches), and quite expensive. You were on the right track, just a little off target.

Why would you suspect it ISN'T gen?

Agreed if you can get a good, a.k.a. standard rep, case. The last Ti case I got from him was his "new" case that the crown and tube are set so far towards the top of the watch that there was a notch in the case (just like Uncle Jay's watches).

His 112 is a bit more accurate "out of the box" than any of the others you listed (or his 202/A). JMO.

Yeah, the 8-day JLC movement looks nothing like a 6497. Not a very good rep, at that.

Those look like standard DSN reps to me. What seems heavily modded about those dials?

What the gen *IS* like. This is a current model in the Panerai catalog. The dial looks pretty good compared to the Panerai.com photos. The pushers look like they might be a tick too long, but pretty good other than that. Panerai.com shows a solid case back, not sure how true to reality that is, though.

$1900 for a DSN MM20 PVD ($400) and a used Simona strap ($250 at MOST). Deffo *NOT* a good deal.

Nope, that's the "good" case. There was some evidence to suggest that the 0518 case had more instances of exploding crystals than the 0117 case. Hence my question.

When did this collector buy these? It's been a LONG time since any PAMs sold for $300, I'd wager. Even back when Sly "discovered" them while making Daylight, they were selling for ~$2K, IIRC.

PAM036 - Ti case, tobacco colored dial, painted indices, "Marina Militare" and "Luminor Panerai" printed on the dial. PAM118 - Ti case, tobacco colored dial, painted indices, "Luminor Marina" and "Panerai" printed on the dial. PAM177 - Ti case, black dial, sandwich indices, "Luminor Marina" and "Panerai" printed on the dial. Swiss v. Asian -- the new A6497s CAN be really good. However, they seem to be a bit more prone to showing up in an assembled watch dirt or lacking the proper amount of oil. It is impossible, or nearly impossible to source parts for the A6497s and the Swiss parts won't fit. So, if you have an issue that can be solved by a cleaning/servicing, you'll have to replace the movement or scavenge another existing A6497 for parts. Not a great thing, but not terrible, as the Asian movements can be gotten for fairly cheap. The swan neck regulator is a fine regulator system that uses a curved piece of metal to act as a spring against the regulator needle on one side and a small adjustment screw against the regulator on the other side. Allowing for easier and more precise adjustments. Here is a pic to illustrate. At the top-center of the movement, you can see the large curved piece of metal that is the "swan neck" surrounding the dagger shaped regulator.

There is a different movement decoration used on the H series and newer models as well. So, the 177 was introduced in for the G series, it would have had the sausage dial for that year and that year only, as well as the "PANERAIPANERAIPANERAI" graffiti decoration. H series and newer would have the sandwich dial and the current Cotes de Geneve style decoration on the bridges.

Good point, V. I missed the bit about using a Fu case. The "standard" rep Luminor case with its stubby lugs is a better case to use for the Pre-V watches. Save that Fu case for a really nice 001B rep or similar.

The color of the filled indices is really nice. If only DSN would put a little more time/effort into getting those 6s and 9s a *little* bit better, I'd order 3 dials today.... Looks good, Porsche. You REALLY need a V CG to finish it off, though.

What is the case number of your Fiddy? Is it the 0117/1950?

The longer I collect watches (any watches), the more I find my tastes getting more refined, or some would say "focused". I've got two gen PAMs and one very nice "super rep" quality PAM rep. Since buying my two gens, I've had lots of reps come and go, but most haven't gotten any wrist time. My Corum Admirals Cup that I just picked up from "mwee" with ETA day/datewheels and Jakub's double AR is a strong contender for a keeper. Having said that, I wouldn't trade either of my gen PAMs for a half-dozen or so modified reps.

Panerai 202/A

LOL I recognize that watch! It's a 010, though, not a 113, tootall. Here's another pic of that strap on that watch. In fact, I'm going to go swap that strap back onto the 010 right now, thanks tootall!

I *love* tan straps on white dial PAMs. Here are some pics of my 010D on two different PAM straps. GeF Valdarno "camel" color: Savage SAV "natural" color that is starting to get some REALLY nice patina:

The only reason, IMO, to go with the sausage dial is because the shape of the numbers is more accurate. With an homage watch, this isn't a concern. Between the two watches pictured, I'd take the sandwich dial for sure.
