Problem with these automatics by design is they don't like to be manually wound. Ratios on these types are designed to give it a fast jump-start. The zigmaster did some explaining about this issue, however can't seem to find the post anymore.

I know how you feel, it is a shame to butcher perfect genuine watch. I got 2 ebel's with primero movements for my daytona project, but can't get it over my heart to tear them appart. Anyways, wear it well!

I'd say coat the entire underside of the saphire. I find the plexi crystal rollies date much easier to read then the saphire ones. -
