  1. Bit of a noob question, but are these dials very useful? I thought that there was no reliable daytona movement available, or has that changed?
  2. I think gen owners can appreciate the artistic skills in making a great rep. A few years ago on Ferrari Chat, one of the most popular threads was a project by a guy who took a 308, and was installing a 400i V12 engine in it, and modding it to look like a 288 GTO. Everyone loved it. Mostly due to the craftmanship, and the obvious passion for Ferraris the builder had. Equally on a Parker Fly (guitar) forum, I read a thread where a young eastern european guy who could not afford a Parker guitar was converting a cheap telecaster into a replica Parker. No one was offended as he was doing amazing work on a budget. On car forums, there is lots of scorn for an MR2 made to look like a Ferrari, and on guitar forums, there would be a tonne of scorn for someone who puts a Fender logo on a Squire guitar, but I think all enthusiasts appreciate craftmanship
  3. Usually in watches like that, the moonphase is replaced with an AM/PM sun and moon. A moonphase complication is quite complex, that is why the Lange 1 moonphase costs maybe 10k more than the regular Lange 1 (I have not checked their prices in a few years, so may be off on that) From the picture on watcheden it looks like an AM/PM complication, which is a bit of a giveaway. $100 reps of watches with lots of complications tend to have at best simplified versions of those complications. For example, I had a perpetual calendar type watch once (a bit like the one you are looking at), that counted the days of the month 1 - 39... A bit of a giveaway if you do not remember at the end of the month to roll it forward to 1 again. You should take into account that you will have to replace the strap on most of the dress watch reps you buy. The Langes come with very expensive alligator straps, and the reps come with fairly cheap looking straps.
  4. This is quite nice. http://www.1-pc8838.com/br10001-classique-white-asia-manual-handwind-p-3083.html
  5. A watch like that is only ever so good of a rep. The gens are so beautifully detailed, with such beautiful movements, that a rep will always be easy to spot. I would love a rep Lange 1, but having tried on my friends gen, it seems pointless to get a rep.
  6. the pics they are using on the site are of gens...
  7. You will have to be more careful next time shaking your cigar ash into a waste paper basket. Beautiful watch.
  8. Should it have titanium written on the back?
  9. this morning I noticed a small scratch on the lens of my glasses. Dug out a tube of polywatch and was able to polish it away. I worried that it would affect the prescription but appears to have had no effect. I would have had to buy a new lens otherwise. Quite cool!
  10. I would add to this that most gen owners are of the opinion that rep watches are junk that break quickly, or that the gold plating rubs off in the first few weeks. I think they have little respect for something of such low quality, that appears to cheapen the product they own. I owned gens before reps, and the first two reps I bought were low quality Canal street junk that lasted only a few weeks. One a fake Cartier filled up with water when I washed my hands the day I bought it. It took me a long time of reading this site to believe that reps could be of acceptable quality, and even then I started with a BK sub with ETA movement. I came to this site from a long discussion on Ferrari chat on replica watches. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=260825 Many of the members were not at all bothered by the idea of replica watches, but of course despised the idea of replica Ferraris. To me a good replica is fine, a canal street one is not. Equally, a MR2 disguised as a Ferrari F355 is offensive, while a really nice Cobra rep is cool. The MR2 is nothing like a Ferrari in character, but a good rep watch is quite similar to the gen.
  11. There are a bunch of watchsmiths around clerkenwell who are worth trying. I have had them service one of my vintage gens. Not sure of the store name , but it is near the corner of clerkenwell road and st John street.
  12. I love G shocks. I have a fairly similar one to that, and it always gets comments.
  13. Just ordered it. Hopefully she will like it.
  14. Yes, I think the price difference is about 60 dollars. I'm more interested in it having a sapphire crystal than the origin of the quartz movement. The dial can either be regular or mother of pearl. Is the MOP dial worth getting, or does the plain one look better?
  15. Hi guys, I'm thinking of buying this watch for my wife, but dont know very much about Cartier reps. http://www.trustytime.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=21_207&products_id=4806 Trusty seems to have two versions of this, one has a Japanese Quartz movement, and the other has a Swiss Quartz movement. I'm not sure if the movements are any different, i cant imagine what the difference would be, but the Swiss one seems to have a saphire crystal, which I think would make a big difference. Does anyone here know much about these watches, is this a decent rep, and should I get the Swiss version? I'd appreciate any advice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ All threads need pictures, so here is one of the gen.
  16. Ah, dont worry, I worked it out. Here is a pretty good video on youtube.
  17. Is there a trick to removing the bracelet from a DSSD? I want to take mine off to wash and lubricate it using the dry chain lube I just bought. I have a watch pin tool, but push the pin in, and still can't seem to pull the bracelet free. Not sure if I just need to use more muscle or if there is a trick.
  18. I would not bring a car if at all possible. The joy of Cinque Terre is hiking between the villages. You usually do not need to book a place to stay, other than maybe for your first night, the local B&B owners sit out in the town squares, and seek customers. I have not been there for about 3 years, but the B&B's were really nice and cost about 20 euros a night for two of us. Having a car with you would ruin the whole experience in my opinion. You hike along beautiful waterfront, and wander around narrow Italian streets looking for a good lunch place. In a car you would miss the view, and have a nightmare parking.
  19. This is the issue I have. While I am not 18 anymore, I would not want casual acquaintances to view me differently and thus treat me differently.
  20. I'm interested in people’s opinions on what type of reps they buy? I only buy reps of gen watches that cost below $10k. I would feel a bit funny wearing a rep that costs more than about 1/6 of the value of the car I drive. I guess my reason for this is this is that I think people might view me as a fool, if they thought I was spending $100k on a watch, but could tell from knowing my line of work that that is a large percentage of my annual take home pay. I often see secretaries at work who buy very expensive handbags, and my view of them is that their personal finances are out of control. A member posted a while ago a few photos of an acquaintance’s watch collection, which the acquaintance claimed to be 100% gen. He pointed out that the guy lived in a small apartment and had an average car and average job. Members pointed out that many of the watches in the collection were clearly reps. I am not saying my opinion is correct. It is just how I feel. I imagine many people equally feel that the public does not know if a watch is expensive or not, and they want to wear the best looking watch they can get. Let me know what you think?
  21. You could get a rep of a gen that has a quartz movement. Many of the lower end Cartiers and Breitlings have quartz movements. If you get a quartz rep of one of those, it will be fairly accurate.
  22. The seller seems to be selling another 5, using the same photo. Makes me question that they are gen. Where would he be getting so many of these?
  23. I believe dlc is extremely durable, I had it done on my motorcycle exhaust about a year ago and the coating has been extremely durable. If I ever see scratches on it, it's because it scratched material off something else, not that it has been damaged I believe dlc is extremely durable, I had it done on my motorcycle exhaust about a year ago and the coating has been extremely durable. 24. This amazes me too. A 25 dollar casio is more water resistant than our 500 dollar reps. I have paid to have all of mine waterproofed.
