1665 or 16610 - All modded - Vintage or Classic - What shall I do?
Aero_Dave replied to watchfreund's topic in The Rolex Area
I would love to own either one but if I had to choose only one of them, it would be the 1665. Nothing beats a classic and subs are so much more common. Plus it sounds like you prefer the 1665 because it feels bigger to you. We all have different opinions but do what your Gut tells you. Thanks, Dave... -

Today for me its the Ploprof: Anyone recognize the pen? Dave... -
OK, I do like the idea but also have a few concerns. Let's say I send in one of mine and it's valued at $3500. I then can pick from the pool of watches at or below the $3500 value. I understand the concept. But: #1 - what does my monthly fee get me? * Free shipping? * Cost pays into insurance? #2 - Someone has taken my watch out on loan. Its either damaged or never returned. * Do I get to choose who repairs my watch if its fixable? * Do I get $3500 cash sent to me if its lost to stolen? * Do I get 1st rights to keep the original borrowers watch as my replacement if its never returned? #3 - What is the watch is returned, checked for correct serial #'s etc.. but then its now running badly? * Are all watches returned going to be checked for timing & water resistance? * If a watch sits in the pool for more than 3-4 weeks, will it be checked again before going out? As you can start to see, the cost for just checking each watch, every time its comes back or before it goes out again is going to get expenisve. Not sure all of these concerns are really going to make it worth-wild. Unless your not really into this to make a profit, but just to share watches between watch enthusiast. Dave... BTW, I just noticed it appears that today is my 1-year anniversary here!

Any US modders here that do AR work? I'd like to get my crystal & cyclops done. Thanks, Dave...

I can't believe people are bidding on this when he clearly states "CANNOT CERTIFIED AUTHENTICITY SINCE I AM NOT A ROLEX DEALER" Wow, I think I have some stuff I need to sell now! Dave...

OK so I bought a Hangzhou 6460 GMT movement as a replacement for my broken ETA GMT. They say in their ebay ad “HANGZHOU makes the reliable 6460 GMT movement that is a clone of ETA 2836-2 GMT and a full replacement for SWISS MADE ETA 2836-2 GMT. Size and fitting is 100% accurate and it is a direct replacement. If your watch is broken or requires a new movement get this HANGZHOU 6460 GMT that will cost you less than a repair of your Swiss ETA 2836-2 GMT. You can even store your ETA 2836-2 GMT movement and use instead this reliable HANGZHOU 6460.” So I did the transplant of the movement into my GMT II case. Everything went well Until I tried to install the Seconds-hand. I just noticed the center pinion is not tall enough. So my ETA seconds-hand will not fit. So what can I do now? Either replace the center pinion or can I find a seconds-hand with a longer mounting sleeve? If so, who makes one? Here is a picture of the Hangzhou 6460 center pinion. As you can see, the pin height is below the minute hand gear. Thanks, Dave...

Wow guys, don't jinx me now. So far, I've been practicing on a movement with calendar issues and so far, I can put the stem in without tweaking the keyless works. Dave...
-
OK guys, so is there a trick to figuring out how long a stem needs to be, before cutting it? I have a new movement coming in and I'll need to cut the stem to the proper length. Do you just keep taking a little bit off, testing the crown screwed-in and repeat until you get it right? Thanks, Dave...

Whoo Hoo, Just got this baby back from my Watchsmith. I bought this back in July, then broke-it trying to see if a Gen Crown would fit. Well only the keyless works got out-of-wack. I gave it a try, twice, but still couldn't get the keyless fixed right! I just haven't found any good US based watchsmith I could send it too after the MD debacle. I've never really been a fan of the Nato straps either, until now. I might just keep it on this strap for a while. :-) Dave...

I love the inside font style. And I love how simple it looks too. Clean, but very stylish inside. A real classic. Enjoy! Dave... -

I agree with Andy. As long as you don't take on either more work than you can handle or work that is beyond your skills, everything should be good. So my suggestion is, go slow, ask for details of what the customer is looking for in repair work, before taking on the task. Keep in communications with your customers on the progress and try to give good estimates on pricing and timeframe of how long the job should take. I don't mind waiting as long as I know what to expect, I'm patient. I never want to rush a skilled craftsman at their job. I'm sure everyone else feels the same way, we want to think my job (when working on it) is priority #1 at that time. Looking forward to hearing good reports from your customers. Thanks, Dave... We'll guys, I did it. It may not be much of an accomplishment to some, but for me I feel Great. I sent my Omega Ploprof out on July 19th to MD2020 to have the date centered in the window. When I sent it, the watch was working perfectly and keeping great time. We'll as most of you know, MD had major issues and nothing I sent got fixed right. Although I was luckily enough to at least get my watches back, 4 months later, my Ploprof arrived broken! The crown & stem wouldn't go all the way in, the movement was mounted upside down ( MD had the crown on the right side like most other watches, but the Ploprof's crown belongs on the left side) and the hour hand was stuck at 6 o'clock. So after my initial frustration cooled down some, I decided I would start the process of trying to fix my own watches, if possible. So I started purchasing tools and getting things together to work on my own stuff. We'll today I decided to jump in and see what's up with the Ploprof. I took the watch apart & decased the movement. I found the movement was not mounted correctly in the ring / holder, so it was causing the movement & hands to sit lower under the dial than it should. So the hour hand was hitting the 6 o'clock stick marker on the dial. The seconds hand was also slipping. I had taken previous pictures of the watch movement inside the watch before and looking back at them, I could tell MD must have broken the original stem and replaced it. So the new stem now was just a tad too long. So I cut the stem just a bit, remounted the movement, reseated the hands, recased everything and Whoo Hoo. It's working great again. So far, it's keeping great time too. It's a great feeling to not only have my Ploprof back on my wrist, since the last time I wore it was back in early July, but I fixed it! Thanks goes out to Freddy333 for his suggestion to decase the movement to check if it stills sticks at 6 o'clock. Your suggestion gave me the idea to go ahead and give it a try. Here she is, in all her Beauty. Dave...
-
Thanks Freddy. I will decase the movement and check it out. Any ideas on why the crown won't go all the way back in now? Thanks for the link too. I may just take the online classes. Dave...

Nice to know. Be ready, you may get more work than you can handle. We need a good US modder! Dave... -
OK guys, I have some movement repair questions hopefully a modder can help me out. After my last watch repair that was set out, can back broken, I decided to purchase a bunch to watch repairs tools. I want to make an attempt to start fixing my own stuff! So… I have an Omega Ploprof with an ETA 2836-2 movement in it, that was working Perfectly fine when I sent it out to MD. He was only supposed try and center the date better, in the center of the date window. But when I got it back, not only will the crown not seat flush with the case, when changing the time, the hour hand starts slipping at 6 O’Clock and won’t go past this time. So, not sure why the stem & crown won’t go in all the way in (it doesn’t appear that the stem was removed from the crown). And what would be causing the hour hand to slip only at the 6 O’Clock position? At this point, I’m willing to try and fix it myself. At least it will be a learning point for me on whether or not I’m cut out to be a fixer upper! I guess if the movement needs servicing to fix it, me taking it apart (as long as I don’t break anything) won’t make it any worse. BTW, the watch does appear to work after shaking it and over night, it kept good time until it hit 6:00am. PS, a little about my background may help. I was an USAF B-52 Aircraft Mechanic. Then for the last 26+ years, I have been a Senior Network Engineer. I’ve always loved taking things apart and putting them back together. I kind of have a Photo-Graphic memory when I take stuff apart, so I know where the parts go back together. I have a ton of patience when working on small, detailed things. I’m also setting up a nice area in my home office, just to work on my watches. I know it will take time to learn the in’s & out’s of watch disassembling and rebuilding. I’m willing to give it a try and hopefully enjoy this hobby even more. Thanks, Dave…

OK, so my ETA 2836-2 is not working right. One option would be to just swap it out for a Hangzhou 6311. It's a 100% compatible movement, but just wondering if anyone has any 1st-hand experience with this movement? If so, are they any good? They run about 1/2 the cost of a replacement ETA 2836-2, but if they are not reliable, then it might be a waste of my time & money. Thanks, Dave...
-
You can add me to the list as well. I did receive my stuff back, but my Perfectly good working Omega Ploprof that was sent in just to adjust the date window is now busted. The crown doesn't screw all-the-way in and when changing the time or when running the hour hand now won't go past 6pm. Another watch I bought in a M2M sale busted before I ever got it, so it was sent to MD for repair. MD said it was fixed, but all I got back was a bunch of parts and a missing gen Rolex crown. So I got screwed on Both ends if that deal and I'm out just over $600 on this watch alone. Dave...

You are correct sir. I had a momentary lapse and forgot which watch I was going to use. So the Real question is: Will the Seiko 7S26C be a direct swap? Thanks, Dave...
