  1. Let's say I bought a rep and somehow managed to misplace it e.g. house move, or just parked it in a drawer. Then 5-6 years later, I find it again. Would it still work fine? I'd think that provided it was properly oiled and stuff (so that any parts that might rust up wouldn't) that there'd be no problem. I don't see why not but who knows with these things so I'm going to ask. I'm pretty sure that I saw The Zigmeister say somewhere that a watch needs to be serviced every 5 years or so cause the oils would "dry out" or whatever so that gives me some reason to question. Thanks.
  2. I couldn't agree more with everything you've said. I also think that they don't cost much more to produce. They just have a greater attention to detail.
  3. That's pretty cool. Good for you. I used to do that when I was in university. Not that often, I admit, but a few times every semester/term. I also used to do work with the Children's Hospital with my Fraternity (yes, I am a "frat boy") with fund raising and visiting the kids. Sadly I haven't had much time in the last couple years to do that because of my educational commitments.
  4. I can only answer a couple of your Qs cause I'm new to PAMs myself. The letter corresponds to the year the watch was made. There are different versions like F, G, etc. Not sure how much "behind the scenes" differences there are but the most obvious one is the dial. H = sandwich dial where the letters are cut out of the dial and the lume is below the face and plain 177 = sausage dial where the lume is on the dial and kind of raised off of it. Just so you know, there is no difference in terms of functionality with the replica swan neck. There is on the gen but for the reps it's just a visual thing.
  5. I'll keep that in mind if I decide on the watch. Right now my quota is gone for a while. Have to comment that the pearl looks pretty bad on that rep though (not a big deal for a knock-around watch except that it may get knocked off) and is pretty different to the gen. I don't really care in this case about it being different cause neither are the chronos but I think it just doesn't look good. PS The top link above the pearl needs a little cleaning.
  6. Yeah, I don't even have the PAM yet so I'll perhaps make a judgement off of whatever (probably very crappy) strap it comes with and go from there. And, like you, maybe me my taste will evolve. In the mean time, I guess I will continue looking at wrist checks and PAM reviews to see the different straps, styles and lengths that people are sporting to get an idea of the variety of looks. Thanks for your help once again. There's always got to be "those people". One of my old landlords never used to require a deposit to reserve her apartments (which people used to do months in advance) until she started getting screwed when she'd hold them for someone who'd pull out at the last minute. *** @sssurfer, thanks for sharing your experience.
  7. Same as ubi - thanks for bumping this up cause I'm new here and missed it. Thanks to the OP for sharing. Was a really awesome read!
  8. Thanks chieftang. In the end, I decided against it. Hopefully I don't regret the decision. For what it's worth it was a Crazy Horse strap for $100 shipped. Pretty decent price cause the guy said he only wore it about a dozen or so times. However, I did some approximations on my wrist with some paper cutouts (hey, one's got to improvise heheheh) and I think it will be a but too much tail for me. I tend to be a little bit more conservative in my style of dress. Don't know if that applies to strap length but I'm not sure if I want a lot of extra strap coming up the side of my wrist. I was actually on Vintager Straps the other day checking them out but looks like the website's closed. However, even according to his FAQ, he suggests 6.6" - 7.0" = 125/75 I think I will stick with those guidelines for my first strap and branch out from there if I decide I would like something longer. Thanks again to everyone who replied.
  9. Okay thanks for the reply guys. Don't think I want too much tail so going to have to consider if I want to risk it.
  10. I've never worn a leather strap before so kind of new to this. I've read some strap-sizing guides and it seems like it would be too big but the hopeful part of me says that it isn't much difference from 125/75 (suggested) given the thickness of the strap. PAM 112 44mm. Stainless bracelet usually worn higher up on my wrist loose enough to stick 1 finger under. Can just barely stick two fingers under when it's right at the bottom of my wrist. Not loose enough to spin 360 degrees on my wrist n either position. Actually, it can when at the bottom but I have to do it. Doesn't spin on its own, I mean. Thanks.
  11. Yeah, it's like getting a new watch since you can change the look depending on which strap you wear.
  12. Thanks for the breakdown andreww. Looks like you're right about the version but not a big deal to me. I think the rep still looks pretty decent and, truthfully, I don't really mind fantasy watches. Will have to think it over. Cheers.
  13. Thanks. Was just curious if it came down in price at all since last year. Guess not. Yeah, I'm not blaming you for taking "bad photos" at all. I think your shots are quite good and I understand that it's just hard to capture the true beauty of the dial. It looks quite horrible on Tag's website. Like really bad. I had to see it in person to make the decision and then it was no contest with the black or white for me. It's a pity that it's so difficult to photograph because then people reading your review don't really know what it's like. If I didn't read that it was the same as the gen, I might not have bothered to "risk" ordering the blue replica without seeing it in person because the photos and the reality are quite different. I'd probably have played it safe and gone with the black dial.
  14. I'm curious what the price was "back then" if you don't mind? I bought one a few weeks ago and it's still $250 (plus shipping in lots of cases) from most dealers. Got it from Ruby for $239 shipped including her usual +$10 for using PP. *** This watch is interesting. I was originally quite interested in the black dial because I didn't like the look of the blue one on the website. To be honest, although your pics and review are great By-Tor, the blue doesn't look so hot in them either (probably cause, like you said, not so easy to photograph). Went to an AD to check it and the UPO out to see which I liked more and wanted to buy and was trying on the black one when I decided to give the blue a second look. Glad I did cause it's gorgeous.
  15. Sure hope that's the case. That would be awesome and most welcome. Hope you get your watch soon.
  16. Wow, this thread is really getting out of hand.
  17. Post lots of pics please.
  18. Lucky bastid. I was reading about his mods. You got a pretty sweet deal there. Of course, I have no clue how much it cost but you got a great watch modded by one of the best. *waves*
  19. The first thing I thought when looking at reps is that since the prices are all pretty much in US dollars that it works out great for those who are paying in GBP or Euros, etc.
  20. You know, there is one thing that concerns me. Chieftang pointed out earlier that the pics of the dial from Ruby look white and while I've never seen the Overseas in person I agree that the gen appears to be more silver in colour. I'm looking forward to seeing some reviews or pics of the new white version.
  21. Sell me your own. This is likely the next watch on my list unless something else happens to come up that I must have.
  22. No accounting for the tastes of a collector. I wouldn't be caught dead with that on my wrist (classic or not) much less pay $2k for it. But to each their own as long as they're happy. Hahaha, what did he say when you said you wanted to take a pic of his watch? I guess he was happy at the interest in his prized piece but still...
  23. Not currently. But will be soon. Hopefully just for the leather. My woman is weird. She's not into bags. Her mom once bought her an expensive one and she said it was a huge waste of money. Actually, I shouldn't complain about that. That's great for me. Thanks for the ideas. Figured as much but was wondering if anyone might have some other suggestions.
  24. I bang into things a lot *sigh* but that's good to hear. Also, for what it's worth, I use mostly free weights and not a lot of machines so I deal with a lot more metal than padded bars. Not saying that that's not the case with you but I know a lot of people stick with things like a Hammer machine rather than lifting barbells. I know what my watches have been through and I guess I just want something cheaper that I don't mind scratching/knocking. Guess I could always go with a cheaper Asian movement.
  25. Considering getting one as a cheaper watch to wear in the gym while still styling rather than wearing a better, more expensive rep with a more delicate(?) mechanical movement. They look pretty decent (the gen I mean since I'm asking about the rep) and are quartz so it won't be inaccurate to have that movement. Any other quartz watches you guys might suggest? Other than the Tag Link cause I have that in the blue auto Chrono so want something different. Please, no criticisms of how quartz "has no soul". Well go ahead and critisize as long as you try to contribute something productive. Thanks.
