milesd Posted May 29, 2011 Report Posted May 29, 2011 So I'm building a 5517 and I wanted a specific gen crown (I eventually found out it was a 702). At first, not knowing much about Rolex, I bought the first gen crown and tube I saw posted on the forum. However after doing much research I found the crown I wanted was a 24-702. During the hunt, I ended up with a 24-703 (with long logo) and a modern crown. However this weekend I finally found a 24-702 and I've got an aftermarket crown tube from a member here. Thanks to RWG members as I did a search and found all the info I needed here. 702 - 703 - 704?? 702 vs 703 702 tube vs modern tube
Nanuq Posted May 30, 2011 Report Posted May 30, 2011 IMHO, the 702 is the king of Rolex 7mm crowns. Nicely done!
alligoat Posted May 30, 2011 Report Posted May 30, 2011 Nice comparison. The thread pitch on the case ends of the 702 and 703 tubes looks slightly different... You would hope the 702 tube is 3.0mm x .35 just like the 703 tube. I have a 702 case tube which came out of my '78 1680, I'll look at it tonight when I get home. I had to go to the 703 assembly a few years ago when my crown putzed out- threads stripped out in the stem end. Since then, I've picked up a 702 crown in case I decide to switch back.
Watchmeister Posted May 30, 2011 Report Posted May 30, 2011 Gorgeous. those are very tough crowns to find at reasonable prices.

Yes, I noticed that. I hope everything fits with my mbw case.
Mapman57 Posted May 30, 2011 Report Posted May 30, 2011 Wow, great picture set as well. Helps us more noob like members, to really see the difference between the evolution of the respective gen crown models. Good luck with that 5517 build, looking forward to the 'regular updates here'
milesd Posted June 1, 2011 Author Report Posted June 1, 2011 Yea, I'll post updates as it goes along.
btocamelo Posted June 1, 2011 Report Posted June 1, 2011 Where did you source the 702 tube? It's aftermarket?
praetor Posted June 1, 2011 Report Posted June 1, 2011 i got my aftermarket 702 tube from marsupilami
highoeyazmuhudee Posted June 1, 2011 Report Posted June 1, 2011 i got my aftermarket 702 tube from marsupilami like the majority of the forum i assume
btocamelo Posted June 1, 2011 Report Posted June 1, 2011 yep....me too....just checking to see if there was another source like the majority of the forum i assume
milesd Posted June 3, 2011 Author Report Posted June 3, 2011 Nopes, I got it from marsupilami as well.
Dizzy Posted June 6, 2011 Report Posted June 6, 2011 So I need a different tap if im going to change to a 702 tube? The threads look completely different.
Ephry73 Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 So what is the consensus when using the 702 tube? different tap size/pitch? E
krpster Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 IMHO, the 702 is the king of Rolex 7mm crowns. Nicely done! Hey Nanuq, what about it makes you feel that way? Just curious
ubiquitous Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 Have to agree... 702 is my favorite as well...
Nanuq Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 Hey Nanuq, what about it makes you feel that way? Just curious I like several things about the 702. Mostly I like the beveled back and how it looks in between an old pair of crown guards. That little gap to the case is essential for vintage Rolex. Then I like the fully exposed threads. With a 703 part of the threads are covered by the crown and if you get crud in there (inevitable) it can't be cleaned out and the crown/tube threads can get stripped. Finally, you can clean/wax the threads on a 702 tube with a piece of dental floss and keep 'em smooth as a baby's butt. Nothing finer.
Ephry73 Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 I have become a convert Thanks Ubi!
woof* Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 I too was lost....now a convert to the cult of 702 btw......yuki sells the aftermarket tube http://www.yukiwatch.com/catalog/item/6784664/8586847.htm (ty ubi)
Ephry73 Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 I too was lost....now a convert to the cult of 702 btw......yuki sells the aftermarket tube http://www.yukiwatch...664/8586847.htm (ty ubi) That's the twinlock crown. If Yuki has the 702, it will be good to know for sure. Ordering my 702 tube later tonight from marsupilami
ubiquitous Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 702 is technically a Triplock. 700 is a Twinlock...
Ephry73 Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 I'm sure the twinlock tube could be used, but I am not sure how water tight the seal will be. I guess if there was enough "crush" on the rubber o-ring with the top of the twin-lock it would be ok, but looking at the designs of the two tubes, there is a gap that's too large to just simply squeeze harder. The tubes that Yuki sells are for the "dot-less" 700 crowns I believe. E
woof* Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 I didn't know that, I thought the reason at service.. they went from the 702 to the 703, was newer better (from twin to triple) technology.
