Rolex Submariner 16610.

A serie from 1999.

Pictorial and review of an "almost rare" Submariner.

Dear All,

Here is my testimonial of my (our?) grail watch: The Rolex Submariner.

Preambule

I am 47, nearly 48.

Since I was a teen I really wanted this watch.

Why? Because of the brand? Because of the look? Because of the recognition?

I don't think any of us could say why.

It's exactly like guys who are attracted by some cars and not by others.

But the big question is: "Why did I wait so long to buy myself a genuine Submariner?"

These Subs can be found at 4k $ or 3k€. It shouldn't take so many years to save money and buy one, does it.

My answer is "I feel guilty if I go for it and own a genuine!"

Well let me tell you, I don't feel guilty at all since I have it home.

The watch

I am not going to quote the internet for the Submariner Saga.

There are tons of reference sites where you can find valuable information.

I will only focus on my "version".

My16610Gen_800_05.jpg

It's a 1999, A serie.

It is presented to be a "rare" one.

Why?

Because in that year Rolex produced a Flat S Sub coupled to a Swiss dial.

According to what I read this is the first Luminova Submariner. Not a Super Luminova yet (SL).

My16610Gen_800_15.jpg

On top of these particularities it's also the last without SEL (Solid end links).

The bracelet is the famous 93150 (with strips on the clasp).

The endlinks are 501b

I would like to add that I got this one, a full package including the original invoice from the Amsterdam dealer from this seller: www.subgtm.com

Not that I want to advertise him or promote him but this guy is truly unique.

He sent the watch before he got the money on his account.

Enough said about him.

Thanks for looking and reading.

:bye1:

Cheers

congrats on the gen. It is a beautiful example of a classic. And you have all the parts to go with it.

How is the lume? I had one of the first luminova watches as well, and the lume was very, very poor. It would only hold a charge for a few minutes.

Stephane,

Yet another generous and beautiful pictorial offering by a true gentleman. I enjoyed reading the story line and learning a little more about Rolex subs.

Congratulations Stephane. It's always nice to have a gen and you certainly picked one with a cool little bit of historical significance. The great thing about hanging around here is that you learn something new every day. I like that transition from tritium, to luminova to SL and you've helped me see how it happened. I'm somewhat partial to the 93150's w/ the 501B end pieces for a bracelet- SEL's just don't do much for me. And an 'A' serial is bound to become a collector's item- you're just ahead of the curve as we say here in the U.S. Wear it well!

Of course you wouldn't want to promote him Stephane...

...you posted the wrong link! :D

Love the watch! I'm still searching for one of my favorites, a 16800 :)

Beautiful addition my friend...a nice little friend for your 16600. Funny thing is, I picked up my first gen 16610 T series last week, and have an F series 16600 on its way to me this week...2 of the classics...and the best!

Man, what can I say? I'm happy for you. Congratulations! :thumbsupsmileyanim:

P.S. You can't stop buying Rollies, you know it.... Who'll be the next? :bangin::D

I guess that would be me. I purchased an F serial LV yesterday and am expecting it to arrive by fedex by noon today. I understand the guilt feeling associated with it, but I am hoping it will pass once it is on my wrist! After too many reps, I decided to finally pull the trigger on a real Rolex too.

Picks to follow tomorrow in another post.

Congrats on your decision.

Franken Rolex are great, specially when vintage, but a genuine isn't bad either :D

Can't wait to see the pics.

That a real nice SUB you get there Stephane.

In fact were are in a strange hobby. If we add up all the heavily modded watches we own every one oculd buy at least one gen.

Wear it well.

Carpe Diem

Cats

P.s does it feel physically i mean :D a lot better then the mistery modded subs you own ??
