When You Make A Major Change In Life After A Sudden Realization...
chris5264 replied to thomasng's topic in The looney bin
This is a very important insight, and I really believe if more people had it the world would be a much better place. There is very good data to show that materialistic values are associated with all kinds of mental and physical problems from depression to headaches, to just about every other problem of modern society. The life style of a professor has very quality, lots of free time and time to pursue different interests and to spend with family. Good luck with your decision… -
The hour wheel problem can be a big deal but I've found a few ways to fix it. If it's a Russian movement, there is enough space to put a cap over the hour hand on the pinion which literally holds it down. With the 6497s I think it is about how you put the hands on. I set the hour hand pretty high up on the hour wheel, so the min hand sort of holds it down. If that doesn't work, I file the min hand down. The problem in getting the min hand to hold down the hour wheel is that a typical min hand doesn't just have a hole for the pinion, it has a lip on it which puts a space in between the two hands in which the hour wheel can move if the watch is upside down. I file this off and push the min hand down a little more than usual. None of this ever affected the timing, the only time it would create more friction is when the watch is upside down. Still, I would like see how professionals deal with this. thanks for the nice comments,

I wanted to see what a radiomir style panerai skeleton would look like, but I didn't have a case so I ended up using this case from a trias. I think it came out pretty well, perhaps better than the luminor because it looks a bit more of a dress watch. The cool thing is that there are no brand markings on it, so kind a makes it original. Hands are from tourbillon1801. I do think it would look best with a black croc, but none around.

Stripped Thread On Po - What Are The Options?
chris5264 replied to ihaveaticker's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
Any luck with your PO? I've had the exact same problem and haven't really started to think about what to do. I may have some replacement parts coming but it still really stinks, this is such a cool watch and now it just sits there. -
Any Opinions On How To Finish A Case?
chris5264 replied to chris5264's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
Yes, I just got it from Otto frie, not bad for 120 (usd). It came with three different dials, all I need is the movement (a 7750) and hands. I've considered just keeping it as it, it does sort of remind me of some of the Sinn watches. The thing is huge, about 43mm across and 15mm high. If anything, will make a unique chrono.... -
This is a huge piece of metal, about 43mm and very thick. Great quality but it doesn't really look like it has any finish at all to it. I'm thinking about two options. First, trying to polish it. I've never done this before with this level of case, would it take 2 hours or 20? The second option is PVD, which I think would look very good. Any opinions are welcome,,,thanks.

Here is a new one for you.....After a month of great performance I went to set this today and couldn't catch a thread when trying to screw down the crown. I'm not sure if the pic helps since I believe the treads are inside, but there is simply nothing to catch onto, you can push the crown right up against the case. I'm just curious if anyone else had this or if this is just a freak. I really have bad luck with reps, sometimes I seriously think the universe is trying to tell me something

something new and strange for friday...

I just got the readysetglow green paint. It does actually glow very well, but it is impossible to paint with. It has the same consistency of snot (sorry, can't think of anything better). It really isn't paint but some type of jell. I tried it on a sandwich dial which has to be the easiest of all dials to relum and ended up starting over. Hopefully the spray paint will work better.

Just got this today, eta 6497, decent lum, 100m WR for under 300 (usd).

that was very cool, that kid probably doesn't even drive a car. One of the things I picked up on hanging with lots of musicians growing up is that one's talent maxes out pretty early. One of the guitarist I knew, was as good when he was 13 as he is now, and he is a professional that has played with lots of famous people. I practiced and practiced and never got any better, that's why I ended up in college

Anyone See This New 7750 Case From Otto Frei?
chris5264 replied to chris5264's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
well,,,I hope it isn't unfinished. I thought it was "sand-blasted" However, just an impulse buy. Looking at tourbillon's 7750 cases, I should have just went with one of those. -
http://www.ofrei.com/page1191.html I just ordered the one with the black inner dial. If I'm correct, I should be able to get a gen swiss 7750 under three hundred. The total cost should be under 500 for a pretty nice gen 7750.

Interesting point, it really isn't what is in the headlines that matters. This forum will be the first to know when reps start disappearing..

at least for today...
-
I would try cleaning the lum off with some rodico, and spray a light coat of matte varnish to the whole dial. This stuff changes the dial just a little bit, but it covers up marks and scratches perfectly.
-
I just ordered the green lum spray paint, this will have to be the easiest relum on a sandwich dial possible. Think about it, take the sandwich dial apart and spray. The shipping was expensive but hope it works out.

I've been thinking about getting a breitling for a while now,,,,,this one is in the top three.

Mine was stiff for about a week (perhaps some context is needed ). I kept using it and in about two weeks it is much better, actually very nice right now.

Fiddy Strap Screw Twisting In The Wind...
chris5264 replied to M5kirk's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
either the lug screws are stripped or the case is. I would try putting pressure from the other side, like a toothpick while trying to unscrew it. If there are no tubes in the strap, you can also try holding really tight onto the lug screw via the strap and try turning it. If it's just the screws, no problem with a replacement. However if it is the case it could be more problematic. Either a case replacement or you could pick up some spring bars from River which work really well. -
Of course,,,this is the BIG difference between my watches and his. I have a lot of respect for what he did,,,he came up with it first AND,,,he actually did the work by hand. I've said this a few times,,,but doing a skeleton 6497 by hand has been a major goal of mine for a long time. Hopefully I'll have the time soon to give it a try. In the meantime, I'll still turn to Greg's work for inspiration.

thanks tourbillon,,,here is my favorite. No doubt this look isn't for everyone, you either like or hate it. Personally, I see it as a total paradox, a military watch that has been skeletonized, it really makes no sense and I think that is why I like it. I exchanged a few emails with that uglyduckling guy, turns out he had the same problem I did with the hour wheel slipping. His solution was to create an arm that extended over the hour wheel, I think he used a hand. He sent me some pics but I can't find them. It looked ok, but seemed a little strange with an extra hand on the movement. My solution has been to file down the min hand so it actually holds the hour wheel down, seems to work well.

What Was The Villain In The New Bond Wearing?
chris5264 replied to MJP's topic in General Discussion
During the poker game, it looked like a Franck Muller chrono to me. However, there were a few others at the table I had no idea what they were wearing.
