Your coments are food for thought as some say. I never thought about the actual cost of producing a Cartier that sells for 10K versus the poor man's equivalent watch that sells for $200. In fact, I bought a Davosa "Yachtmaster" with an ETA movement for $ 250 from a seller in the internet and I haven't heard about Rolex suing the German manufacturer for "cpying" their design. Maybe one should post pics of our gen parodies (NOT REPS) of famous watches and see how many there are out there.

Recently I read an article about the lawsuit started by Cartier against Raymond Weill because of alledged infringement of copyrights. Apparently, RW "copied" some distinctive features of Cartier's Ballonbleu watch and reproduced them in a watch - the Jasmine - that looks similar but which is not a rep or straight "copy" of the original Cartier. Who draws the line defining if a watch is a copy or not ? I wonder how many watch manufacturers should Rolex sue if it came to fight for copyright infringement of the venerable "Datejust." concept.

Well, for a gen owner, your open mind to share with us in the forum is refresing. This experience will show you that plebeian perspectives on horology sometimes are far more insightful than the ones you find in gen forums. The reasons for this are several, the most important being that -in general- rep owners are more interested in the aesthetic, historical and technological quality of the watch, than its exchange and sign exchange value, which moves 90% of the gen retail market. In other words, most of forum members enjoy their rep watches as parodical projections of what many cannot afford, but which still love for what they ultimately represent -that is t-echnological achievement, historical context and aesthetic quality. Welcome to the forum and enjoy your gens and future reps.

Hi fellow members. I apologize for what may sound as a silly question but, Starting last night I have had a lot of trouble to access the watch listings in the Jewellery and watches category. As those who browse the bay, whenever one writes Rolex bar, about thousands of articles posted for sale or auction pop up. The same with major brands like Omega, IWC, Jaeger, and the like. I have been anCuriously , when I do this, a few postings appear. Not many watches but quite a few accessories, like, watch boxes, old ads, photographs of watches and things like that. I read somewhere that ebay was updating their site and I wonder if any of you are experiencing his annoying performance. Hey thank you Sgtguk for your comment. I enjoy my gens and reps the same. In the last weeks, I've been wearing a Blanckpain Flyback that cost me a lBen Franklyn and a half (shipping included) and looks as good as the gen. Cheers !!!

I must confess that I never thought my question in the previous thread would rise so many questions and views of this issue, 115 replies so far. Good time for drawing some conclusions. I suggest these, that seem to have been lost when I posted them in the the original thread. 1.- Not all gen owners hate replicas and their owners 2.- You can both be really happy 3.- Replica watches have intrinsec as well as extrinsec value 4.- Gen watches have more extrinsec (status marker) than intrinsec value (cost) 5.- So, gen owners have alot more problems acepting rep watches than rep watch owners accepting gen watches I'm sure I'm missing a lot more conclusions than the ones I mention.

Unfortunately, we still pose a very serius threat to those peole, because we undermine their concept of "success," in a world where "your are what you wear;" regardless who you actually are.

Hi fellow members: I have always asked myself why is there such hatred against rep collectors from gen watch owners. Check any gen forum and you'll find many long threads that are full of ugly comments about people like us. I have some hypothesis about this phenomenom which I will share, but I'd like to know first if my perception is true or not. Thank youfor reading my post

I was reading the thread but I stopped in the middle of it and thought, . why is it that so many of us who wear replicas would be embarrased to admit they are wearing a copy of a famous watch ? I have about 10 gens (Rolex, Tudor, Omegas, Longines, Midos, Doxas etc) all of them I could afford. My friends know they are gens. They also know I collect replicas (of watches I cannot afford) like Pateks, Breguets, APs, and the like. So when they ask me "is that a rep or a gen"? My answer is: "You tell me" and that's the end of the dialog. Replicas are so well made these days that no one can tell wether you wear a gen or a rep. Only those who really know about this business can have a chance to sort out reps and gens. So my philosophy is letting people think whatever they want, keeping for myself the origin of the watch.

That's hard to believe. A quartz Miyota powered watch on Obama's wrist ? Well, I guess he is not really a watch guy. I'm sure he has better watchs that he prefers not to wear in public, as far as he is the president of the United States. I wonder if there is a thread about "presidential" watches. Same happening to me. This is my first in the section of the forum, so I wanted to take a look at the comparison between gens and reps - thre are quite a few threads on that line - and with few exceptions in none of them were pics displayed. ????????

My all time favorite is Acqua de Gio (Armani), followed by Orange Verte (Hrmes) and since 1968 I have worn and still do Brut (Faverge)

The watch dial looks smaller than the gen, so the dial must be 26.2 mm, instead of 26.6mm, which would lead me to conclude that this is an MBW watch. How about the "octo" movement ? is this a variant of the ETA or is it a different type ? Is there a thread in the forum(s) where to read about MBW watches ? Hope you can bear with my curiosity. Thank yoou all for the imput. This is exciting. The serial number on the 6'clock lug is infact L 341, folowed by three numbers. can you trace the aproximate year of production with that info ?
