Cairns is a long way from anywhere else, if you head out chances are it'll be a long way away or not at all. It's kind of easier to get to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane (or Tokyo!) from Cairns than some nearer places. Personally I wouldn't waste valuable holiday time doing overland from Cairns - it's about 550km's to Airlie Beach, and 1500km to Brisbane. Check out the prices of flights.

My suggestion would not to be to get a faux chronograph as a gift. It seems more sensible to get a regular watch, and then you can have an Asian 21J movement in there to save some bucks. Run, don't walk, from the A7750 seconds at six Portuguese Chrono there - it has a reputation as a beautiful watch....which soon becomes a beautiful paperweight.
