  1. There is something here for everyone (well, except Onze's boobie pics) from genuine to replica and everything in between. And as freddy said, all are respected. Whether you love a full blown franken, or love a budget build, the work done by people here is higher quality than the finest watch makers in the world. Think about the builds we've seen here by people who do not have the resources or machinery or a team of experts that world class watchmakers do have, and even experts can't tell if it's a replica. Only we can. It's amazing stuff, to be sure.
  2. To be honest, and I probably should have said this earlier, I can custom make most any color scheme anyone would like.
  3. TeeJay, Rather than further hijack the other thread I put this here. If I recall you asked freddy if the perspex/bakelite insert came in all black. Guess what! This one is not finished yet, needs shaping and finish polish. I was planning a 16710 with a ceramic insert that I have as a spare, and custom white dial, an 'Oreo'! I decided to try the acrylic first. Hey, it's the Christmas season, I could do a red/green one, or even a plaid for Scotland!
  4. How big a rush are you in? I am pursuing having the small arrow manufactured, so far no luck, but I won't quit!
  5. Maybe the rail shot is a give-a-way if you've posted one before. There is no way anyone can tell that the 6542 isn't genuine because most of it is genuine.
  6. I tried several, and used a different spacer ring between the dial and the movement. I just needed a tad more to clear.
  7. I would expect an answer such as that from Nanuq. You been hanging around with him too long! Everyone does such great work here, and can take pics to show and inspire us all. It's really great.
  8. Very beautiful. That "mystery" DateJust is the Sammy Davis Jr. one, and has stuck in my mind since seeing it. So I'm building one as we speak. I have the onyx day-Date, but that DateJust is so nice. I thank GOD that my old eyes can't read Daytonas any longer. Saves me all that money. So, how much for me to fly you to Chicago, round trip, meals, hotel, to take pics of my stuff?

    Pan-Am

As I understood the story, it was almost 60 years ago when the airline industry was just beginning to get into the 'Jet Age' that Juan Trippe, founder and head of Pan Am, wanted a watch that would help the air-crews overcome jet-lag in the new jet-age. The result was the birth of the Rolex GMT 6542. I have no clue what was in the cockpit of the air liners then, but I thought the idea of a GMT watch was for the crew when they were on the ground at their destination. I know and knew many military men who wear Rolex GMT watches, and wore them into combat. I didn't, being a Lt at the time, and Timex didn't have a GMT in the `70s.
  10. Yep, according to Christie's it is 34mm. http://www.christies.com/LotFinder/lot_details.aspx?intObjectID=5065386 "Lot Description Rolex. An extremely rare stainless steel water-resistant wristwatch with sweep centre seconds and bracelet Rolex, Oyster, Commando, ref. 6429, case no. 2'075'578, manufactured in 1969 Cal. 1225 nickel-finished lever movement, 17 jewels, the black dial with luminous Arabic and baton numerals, luminous hands, sweep centre seconds, in tonneau-shaped water-resistant-type case with screw back and screw down crown, stainless steel Rolex Oyster bracelet with clasp stamped GF for Gay Frères and 7-72, case, dial and movement signed 34 mm. diam." Sold for $21,500 in 2008.
  11. Nope, they do not fit each other. The ETA/Asian 2836, and all the ETA 28XX movements take 90/150/25 hands, while the DG2813 movement takes 1.00/1.50/.17.
  12. That's true, you cannot print white with a normal inkjet printer, but you can use white water-slide decal paper, or paint the bare dial while and use the clear water-slide paper. But someone with a better skills than me would have to do the lume for the numbers.
  13. I found it hard to believe when the deputy told me that as well. But I did go through the metal detector undetected with my GMT IIc in LAX. I certainly do not know why it works that way.
  14. I completely agree. I was surprised when first told this by a deputy sheriff in Cook County at the court house. I had mine off and in the tray already, but he said the genuine go through but not the reps. He was wearing a rep. So I chanced it last February at LAX after getting the same story from a TSA guy. I was impressed!
  15. freddy covered the GMT IIc. Mine is the incorrect hand stack, but about all it needs is the genuine crystal for the A/R on the cyclops. But mine does go through the TSA metal detector without setting it off just as a genuine can. The Coke Retro 16710 from Josh is the 1st good rep I bought and still my favorite by an eyelash over the 6542. Drill the lug holes, a little crown guard work, a genuine crown/tube, a Clark's crystal without the etched crown and Clark's insert are what I did. The genuine 16710 did not have A/R. Two excellent choices, by my taste!
  16. Thanks. The original genuine inserts were lumed, but as freddy333 rightly points out, after some 55 years the lume would be minimal if at all. However, the lume is what gives the 'grainy' appearance in the numbers, so I use it. I give it a tint to emulate tritium. It's a light glow that doesn't last very long. And it does look really neat with the hands, dial and insert all lit up!
  17. Thanks guys, it is appreciated. I tried a better front shot. At least I got rid of the yellow!
  18. No, I don't know. I believe they will be within 1mm on most bezels, depending on age and wear. That seems to be where the variances come from.
  19. After quite a few disappointments in replacement inserts for the Perspex/bakelite 6542 insert, I decided to make my own. In doing so I've decided that I will market them. They are made using acrylic, engraved, lumed and polished. Individually made, hand finished by me! Made in the U.S.A. Outside diameter is approximately 37.5mm, inside diameter approximately 30mm, and approximately 1.3mm thick. I will be listing them on Ebay in the next few days or so at $200 usd buy it now. For members of this site, RWG.cc only I will discount to $175.00 usd. For paying VIP and Platinum members here (not reciprocating to admin or mods from other sites) the price will be $150.00 usd. So, if you're not a VIP here, become one and get a discount that saves you money on both! All plus shipping, please PM me if interested. Please bear with me and my miserable picture taking skills. I promise, I'm working on it. The first pic is far too yellow, and I used a light tent and daylight bulb. The others are more color accurate. Please note the correct font, and the 'grainy' look to the numbers. They are lumed and do glow for a bit (not super lumed) but I can't get that pic to save my life. Being translucent, the red and blue do get lighter and darker depending on the light you are in. I found that fascinating, as the blue will range from Navy to almost a Royal, and the Red from blood red to a hint of orange in varying light. And we have package sales.
