I took a nap with the news on and heard them talking about a hospital trauma center being SU, then our local hospitals mentioned. What! As I started to focus, they were talking about Binghamton, NY and our Civic Center where a lone gunman drove his car to the rear door of the building, locked it then went through the front of the building and started shooting people. Now there's an emergency alert system transmission telling people where family members can get more information from law enforcement about the situation. The shooter killed himself. Holy crap! Binghamton, NY!!!! This is just a few miles from my house. Local news WBNG

Rolex 1655: a fantastic example of watch modification art.
ThinkBachs replied to Stephane's topic in The Rolex Area
I have to smile when I look at that bracelet. When I first started looking for watches to purchase, I would never buy a watch that had one of those cheap rolled link bracelets- CHEAP! I'd think to myself. Now, I see one on an old Rolex and think Ohhhh, VINTAGE! The next thing I think of: all the auction and antique dealers that I know that wear vintage Rolexes, and have a moment of reflection as I wonder about all the poor old ladies sitting in nursing homes thinking about the extra money they should have gotten for their husband's old watch. Running out to the store now, anybody need any cat food? -
Thanks for the closeup shots of the CG, now I have a good reference to work on mine! Great choice and I agree with out that this will hold it's value. Nice to have something that's a little has some special history to it making it more unique than a long run model.

That watch looks familiar for some reason, mostly because of the "M" in SYSTEM. Hmmmm. As far as that being a V4, I sure hope not. Looking at the HEV, I have to shake my head. Here's the V3 HEV :goes to take photo BRB: Gen Mine Please note that I have links to replace the ones that are not "perfect," I just haven't installed them yet. Yours looks more like a V2 to me.

Crap, you suck. Now I've got to think about taking the back off mine and painting the engraved rotor to match the gen... Grrrrr. I just sent mine off for a full service and to replace the part that adjusts the minute chrono to click at 12:00 (or zero minutes) rather than at 56 minutes. I miss it soooooo much. But I know that giving it a good going through right from the get go will make it and me happy for years to come so it's worth the extra wait.

I think there's a big point being missed here in the quote. For those that have experience in manufacturing, there's a big difference in the production of a Swiss movement Vs a Chinese version. First, the materials. Chinese can use a lower grade metal than Swiss. Then, consider the amount of work that goes into prepping and finish on those parts. Reading reviews on Chinese movements that have been running for a while, you'll notice debris within the movement that would not be found in a Swiss. It's all about tolerances and quality material. I doubt that you'll find too many clean rooms in a Chinese factory. The higher the tolerances, the greater the skill needed to build a quality movement. I understand where the author coming from, but the difference between the two can be likened to comparing McDonald's to El Bulli. Take also into consideration the work that goes into developing, building and marketing the brand of a gen Rolex and making a copy of it. There's so much more to this than meets the eye. Edited to reflect that the above post is a reference to a quote. I just checked my panties... crap, today's Wed? Time to change my Monday pair, man... time flies when you're having fun. At least I was able to find them this time (whew), but that's another story for another thread that maybe really doesn't really need to be shared...

It does sound weird. My experience with my watchmaker is that he has worked on maaaaaany reps. A little silicone grease on the O-ring and you're all set. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with a "watchmaker" that 1. didn't know it was a rep, 2. didn't feel comfortable in removing the back because he was concerned about water-proofing. I'd find another to work on the watch. As far as the rotor goes, this is just as easy to fix as replacing a battery. Remove the back, tighten the screw that holds the rotor down, remove the O-ring and use some silicone grease to lube it up, then put 'er back together. Very easy to do yourself. -
This is probably one of the easiest games to get paranoid. If the collector has a good reputation, I agree with freddy333. If they've been doing it for a while, I can understand that it could get a little tiresome to answer all the concerned emails they must get. In a perfect world it would be nice if they treated every customer like it was their first and only, but it sometimes seems that once the money is in their hands, customer service can take a back seat. Mostly because the transaction is in motion and they know that things will be fine. Relax and find something else to take your mind off of things, then enjoy the surprise when it finally does show up in the mail.

I looked and looked at this and comparing it to the gen photo, it looks 100% to me. Beyond that, I don't know enough to find something else that would prove it a rep.

I don't know how to help you on this but I did want to take a moment to say nice job so far on this project.

Darn, I got all excited thinking that this might be an opportunity to be a "Big Noobie"...

From what I've seen on the latest V4, they still can't get it right- bad HEV, poor bezel insert, two things that practically scream fake IMHO. It's so misleading when people ohhh and ahhh over one of these things when someone posts photos of it, and they do so because they want to be nice, or more likely just don't know the difference. Don't reward the factories with your money when they fart out products like this. Be patient and give it to those that spend a few extra moments to make sure that the details are right.

Wow! I wonder how many gen Rolex guys will pick up on this! I'd go with the blue lume, though I'm not sure which it would match better: the markers or the hands, though they may actually be the same color...

Something I thought about but didn't think to voice. There are many forums that I've searched looking for answers to dumb questions and have found comments by arrogant know-it-alls that berate the poor person who posted something that was innocent enough, yet those in-the-know felt the need to express their "superiority" by hurling verbal sticks and stones. So many of us get excited about what we've learned that we must share, and in doing so occasionally reveal things that need to be identified and corrected. As we make mistakes, having someone who is more experienced point those things out in a manner that is helpful and respectful goes a long way to getting us where we need to be. Just like riding a bike, it takes a while to learn how to do it safely. Thanks guys. BTW, that could have easily been me that told this story- except the part where I was buying a gen watch, and was trying on a bunch of gen watches, and would be caught wearing a PAM...

To hell with doctors!

I like it. Notice the rep version on the left... I figure if they get it right to begin with, there'd be nothing for the enthusiasts to play with.

I'm only as far as considering selling my '71 Cougar. Siggy says it all...
