N6, you know I have to protect my sources.........
Jim Croce needs to re-do his song:
You don't tug on Superman's cape,
You don't spit into the wind,
You don't pull the mask from the ol' Lone Ranger, You don't doubt Legend,
and You don't mess around with Jim.
Every time I see that tagline it reminds me of a joke:
A blonde is out in the bayou with a flashlight, hip boots and a rope. Spying movement, she throws her rope around a huge alligator and wrestles him to shore. Dripping wet, she drags him up onto a pile of deceased reptiles, then bursts into tears wailing...
"Oh no! This one isn't wearing boots either!"
Here's a Tonny I picked up, the picture sucks but it's indeed black paint over brass with the relief edge showing. Not bad for 1/10 the price of a Dark Lord dial.
Beware the "grail" that comes too easily ... it will soon lose its luster.
It took over 4 years for me to acquire mine, and another almost 20 years to put it back into the condition it deserved.
NOW ... it's a "grail".
I had a very old MBW 1665 from maybe 13 years ago, and the crown got ruined.
I removed the crown/stem, unscrewed the MBW tube, and chased the case threads with a tap. Then I screwed in a gen 703 tube and put a gen 703 crown on the original stem, then I installed the stem and screwed down the crown to seat the case tube into the case.
Total time, maybe 10 minutes and I remember being amazed it was that simple.
I'm glad you got a laugh out of it. When we post up something we've really worked a long time for, sometimes someone will make a post about it that makes you proud of your piece, and really sticks in your mind as a "I DID IT!" moment. I hope this was it for you... you waited a long time for this and you're rightfully proud of a seriously gorgeous example of your Grail.
Ah well, welcome to the "Banned from TRF" club. No real loss, actually.
I wonder how many over there would spot a misspelled "Submariner"? It's far too easy to see what you want to see, not what's really there.
