  1. there are lots of things wrong, but as alligoat said, for 98 bucks, probably OK. The puretime with the HEV is totally unbelievable, also the crown is too big, the crown guards look too short, but that may be because the crown is so big. Also the movement which is made to look like a Rolex is wrong, because the Tudors used ETA movements and they were not decorated to look like a Rolex movement. I would spend a little more money and try to find a modded one on the sales forum. Either that or try to find a 5513 or 1680 case on the forum and build one.
  2. hard to tell, you need to try to get some higher quality photos so we can see what you are asking about.
  3. I think a comparison should be made between this "TC2824" to say a Seagull ST2130 AA grade. If this movement is going to be 130USD, I'm not sure it's justified. Well, here's the deal. In a very short span of time, new ETA movements are not going to be available. the only source will be out of donor watches, sort of like the Chinese rep makers are doing to get 2846 movements, cracking open old watches and shelling out the movements. So if new ETA movements are not available, it would be nice to have a source of ETA quality movements. I think a comparison should be made between this "TC2824" to say a Seagull ST2130 AA grade. If this movement is going to be 130USD, I'm not sure it's justified. AFA the Swiss improving and refining movements, they have been doing that for years, and I'm sure will continue to do so.Unfortunately this is a moot point, if the movements are not available, it doesn't matter how good they are to other watchmakers if they can't use them in their watches.
  4. Obviously, Honolulu is in a different economic dimension that the rest of the world. They are obviously catering to well heeled tourists. The store has some really nice watches, but man are their prices out of sight. Every watch that they list(Rolex) can be bought from sellers over on the VRM for a lot less. Same with this movement ,dial and hands. I see 1570 movements over on VRM that have a documented recent service for around 1200.00 USD. Pretty nice 1680 dials for 450-600.00 USD and tritiunm hands for 250-300 per set. This movemenmt isn't recently serviced, or I'm sure that they would have mentioned that in the listing. all it says is 1570 movement, condition excellent, not one mention of it's keeping time within COSC (or any) measurement criteria, or even if it's running!! I suppose you could email them for more info if you were interested.I
  5. Maybe because ETA is finally starting to strangle the supply of ETA movements? There are tons of smaller low to middle price watchmakers who have always depended on ETA to supply their movements. If the ETA's aren't avaialble, Sellita can't supply movements, they have to get them somewhere. The shortage may be completely unrelated to this theory, but I do know that about 6-7 months ago, I ordered one from Ofrei, and it was backordered for probably 2 months.
  6. I agree 100%. these aren't worth anything as far as investment value. they are huge, difficult or impossible to make water resistant, and are overall just a bad deal. If you look at the listings, almost all of them are coming from Eastern Europe. Those watchmakers (term used loosely!!) Are using redials, bogus movements and supposedly silver cases. but they well may be brass with silver plating, who knows. Those guys are experts at identity changing. They are the original "shape shifters" If they pull a few scams, Ebay shuts them down, they just resurface as a different person, and do the same thing again.. Save your money and get a real wristwatch. If you want a Patek, save up and get a simple dress Patek.
  7. That would be a great concept, one stop shopping!!
  8. FedEx andUPS both have their own inhouse customs clearing facilities. they don't miss anything!! you may get a replica watch through their customs facility, but you may also get a letter from FedEx that you owe 75.00 USD customs duty for your Rolex Submariner. AFA they are concerned, it's genuine, you owe the duty!! More than likely, they will seize it and destroy it as a counterfeit. Much more likely to get one seized with them than with Postal Services. They are faster, no doubt, because they have company mandated delivery schedules to maintain. If they guarantee 3 day delivery from Manchester England to Dallas TX, they darn sure are going to get it delivered on time, unless it is delayed by a natural disaster or some manmade situation. The FedEx website last week prominently displayed on their website that package delivery would likely be delayed in the New Orleans area last week during superbowl week. Also, the cost of shipping a package with UPS and/or FedEx is considerably more expensive than using the USPS.And, have you ever filled out the multiple customs forms required by FedEx? It takes me about 4X the amount of time as it takes to fil out the white USPS Customs Declaration form!!
  9. Thanks, Glad to hear that. I completely forgot about the limited libility with credit card. i'm a little more accutely aware of the goings on in Russia, my wife is from Ukraine, and she keeps me posted on all the shenanigans in her country and Russia as well as subcscribing to an English lamguage newspaper from Ukraine, which I read as well. Now if I could just get the problem sorted out that would allow me to upgrade from VIP to Platinum, I would be in good shape.
  10. J, Does that mean that you would be reluctant to use Payza? Lots of credit card fraud coming out of that part of the world. I signed up too, but thus far I have not give them any credit card info.I would hate to wake up in a few days and find out that some hacker in Russia had installed a trapdoor in my computer and was looking at all my credit card info, and was stealing my passwords and log in info. My question is why can't we use something like moneygram or western union to pay our yearly subscription?
  11. Darn you guys!! He decided to keep it. I emailed his wife a couple of times and pleaded with her to keep on raising hell with him, but she gave up too soon. I almost had it!! but you had to keep giving him that lame advice "Keep it,keep it ,Sell something else" I thought you guys were my friend.
  12. I believe that quite a few guys who started out on reps, Jack@IWW was one of them, not necrerssarily only reps, but he did work on a lot of reps at first, but as his fame spread, guys like that who are really good, realize that they have plenty of genuine watch business, and they gradually slow the number of reps and increase the number of gens. I believe that some of that stems from frustration trying to literally make a "Silk purse out of a sows ear.Guys send their watchmaker a basket of parts, and expect a pristine, fully functional, 99.9% correct rep, and when it doesn't happen they are not happy. Years ago Ziggy was having trouble with folks sending watches and after he spent lots of time effort and money trying to fix the problem, the owner didn't want to pay.I doubt that most watchmakers who repair genuine watches end up with many of them still around unclaimed after 6 months!! Maybe a few, but not a real problem I would suspect. Another thing are charges. If yo uare working on someones Rolex or Omega, heprobably isn't going to quibble a bit if you tell him a complete service is 175.00 USD, a guy with a broken 200.00 USD rep isn't going to spend 175.00 USD to get the movement serviced. He would like the same service, but for 50.00 or 75.00 USD.The problem is it takes the watchmaker just as long and about the same amount of oil, grease, etc. to do the 75.00 service as it does to do the 175.00 Service. If you were in his shoes, which would you prefer? It's wonderful that we have the folks that we do who are willing to work on reps.Iwish twere were more, but I'm sure happy that we have some. MD, keep up the good work with the luming, it's a whole new world!!
  13. OK so now wea re loogged on and set up and account, what next? Went to the RWG store tried to do a Plat membership, got a message "Invoice pending" clicked on that ,came up no invoices. 14. I believe that now that the name of the seller is out, the buyer should post a link to the sales thread.Would be nice to see how the parts were described. having said that denimhead has said that he will refund the guys money AND let him have the case, so if that's the case, then this one should be "case closed"
  15. International rates have been going up for years. My wife ships packages all the time to her family in eastern europe. 10 years ago, the average box was around 35.00 USD. the same box now is probably closer to 70.00 USD. Same service, double the price. One thing I have noticed however is the rate difference between priority mail, and express mail, both domestic and international has gotten smaller. it's just a few dollars more expensive to ship express now as opposed to using Priority. USPS rates are still less than FedEx or UPS, but they are getting closed. I believe that some of the rate increases are based on the jump in fuel prices over the past few years. USPS has to pay airlines to fly parcels and mail, so when their rates increase, the USPS is forced to pass those increases on to the customer
  16. Not sure what you are driving at without more info. First off, most of the modders here are trying to build watches with as many genuine parts as possible. For the most part these are used parts. So, you will have to accept wear and tear as a fact of life. Now, if the seller was selling me parts that were supposed to be new or NOS, and they arrived looking like they were run over by a forklift, I would be very unhappy. Good photos before you buy, and good communication are pretty vital to buying watches and watch parts.
  17. +1 to that!! The only other good lume job I have gotten here in the USA was Jack Alexyon (Jack@IWW) and he only works on genuine watches, but I promise you he is really really good. I would have to add mymanmatt to the list of watchmakers who do modding and movement work. no re luming though. He has done several watches for me including my wifes genuine Rolex Lady Datejust. he has done very nice work on all of them. Not sure how much work he is taking in, but he's a member here.
  18. He is retiring. I'm quite certain he is not taking any new customers, one reason being he has a finite timeline that he is working with. He is not accepting any new work after June, probably to give him time to finish up everything before the first of next year.He will probably be inundated with requests by old members that have sent him lots of work in the past. Also he has a Day job that requires some travel, so he doesn't have a lot of time to do watch work. i wish I could be of more help to you with your watch problem, but unfortunately I can't. Why don't you give MD2020 a shout if you are having moverment problems, he's your man.. He's a good guy and does very good work, well recommended by members here. He is in the Chicago area, so you would have to ship across the border, unless you have friends or family in Maine who could send your watch off for you.
  19. Since you are from Houston, and he's from there as well, do you know if he actually has a real "brick & Mortar" business, or is he running the watch parts business out of his spare bedroom
  20. Beautiful work BigD!! Have you ever thought about moving to the USA?? I just read that the US Immigration service has special fast track Visas fro "Watch modders"
  21. Valty, I agree with you, new passionate members are truly appreciated and welcomed. Guys liike cc33 have brought a lot to the forum and I'm happy that he is here. However like you said, we have to move carefully because most of the members who would be interested in a watch like this one are either very knowledgable about what they are buying, or they enlist the help of folks who are knowledgable, but like nanug said the big problem is a noob with a fistful of 100 dollar bills, sees the watch, all he sees is "Genuine except for the hands". WOW!! A great vintage Daytona for 8k, so he buys it and when he gets the watch, he takes it to someone to authenticate his great "Deal" and here's where the music stops. For all we know the guy who sold the watch was a "one stop shopper" sold a 4k watch for 8k, quick 100 % profit and pooof he's gone. Usually a watch like this will sit on the sales forum for a while, so it gives the experts time to dissect the watch and let everyone know it's not as described. If that happens, all well and good, but you can't count on it. We have all seen watches come up for sale, and in and hour, they are gone.
  22. I'm not sure that this is the arrogance of Rolex as much as it is a liability problem. in the case of the watch that was changed from acrylic to sapphire,Rolex could never guarantee the water resistance because it had been altered.Same with aftermarket parts. I believe that Rolex will work on the watch, but they will remove the aftermarket parts, destroy them and replace with genuine Rolex parts. AFA the bracelet, I would just bring the watch head in only, or put it on a Nato. IF they ask, all you have to say is my original bracelet broke and this is all I've got. As long as there are good well trained Rolex watchmakers out and about, I don't see any reason to take a watch back to an AD or to a RSC unless it's in warranty.
  23. Be thinks the seller doth complain too much! Although he never got his listing, I feel sure it would have been titled "Daytona 6265 all genuine except for hands" just like the OP who originated this thread described it. So right off he is "massaging the facts". Now he's miffed because the admins didn't just automatically give him high value sales permission. He's complaining that he wanted to get a VIP membership, but couldn't, well sport, the fact that you have a VIP or Platinum membership doesn't automatically vet you for high value sales. And nothing against you, and your really nice watch, but we have had scammers here before, and probably will in the future, just the nature of the game. What the difference is, if you or me or anyone else here, scams someone on a 200.00 USD watch deal, that's bad, but it's not a terrible blow to the buyers pocketbook, but if the scam is a 8k watch that's really only worth 4k then you have delt a crushing blow to the buyers pocketbook. That's why high value sales are vetted. It's nothing personal against you, but we all have to play by the rules, and the rules are there to protect our members.
  24. It is expensive, all watch hobbies, rep or genuine are expensive, no matter how you take it. I read here about members who order 3,4,5 reps at a time, and have 200 watches!! If they average 200.00 USD each, that's 40K USD in rep watches. On the other side of the coin are the folks who are building super frankens with lots of genuine parts.they may have 10 watches, but they may have 3-5 K in each one, so they still have around 40K in watches. Which route would I take? In my case I love vintage, so I go the Franken/super franken route, but to each his own. but no matter how you cut it, if it,s a hobby, it's going to be expensive. At the present time, I have 20 watches, 14 are genuine and 6 are reps, all of the reps are modded.
  25. the last one with the swing lugs, may or may not be a Patek movement. It does not say Patek anywhere on the movement, the seller can say whatever he wants, but unless he has some sort of documentation that that paerticular movement was made by Patek and sold to A.H.Simon, it could have been made by anyone. This seems to be a big business, taking old pocket watch movements and putting them in a wristwatch case. Not much market for old pocket watches, unless they happen to be a rare complication, no one wears them today, so they end up in a display case. They buy these old watches pertty cheap, uncase the movement and if the dial is in good shape, use everything but the case, which if it's gold is sold for scrap.
