  2. The 4130 is used in both the 116520 and the 116500LN brother. So you must be using the 4130 movement. Good call! I tread softly along the fine line separating raving insanity and lucid moments of ingenuity. The issue is I've no idea which is which mostly.
  3. Movement is a 4130? I tread softly along the fine line separating raving insanity and lucid moments of ingenuity. The issue is I've no idea which is which mostly.

  5. Thanks M. I'm no Rolex expert. I could probably spot an AP rep but still not able to spot Rollie reps unless it's an obvious one. Thanks once again! I tread softly along the fine line separating raving insanity and lucid moments of ingenuity. The issue is I've no idea which is which mostly.

  8. Not true. A well maintained swiss movement can last for a long long time, but just buying a "swiss" movement and expecting it to run flawlessly till the end of time without any maintenance is unrealistic. I have had ETA2824, the workhorse of swiss movements, fail on me due to poor maintenance. For quartz movements, I guess the extent of service would cover a change of battery every 2-3 years and an inspection for corrosion. But not totally maintenance free, and definitely not immune to failures. I do agree with the guys though. Get the Rhonda movement. It has good reliability and excellent for daily and continuous wear.
  9. This is a manufacturing flaw and I hope you have not accepted the watch. Ask for another piece.
  10. I wouldn't wear a watch of any kind when doing physical work but if I do, I would choose something like this: Can't beat the price at $3.29! I tread softly along the fine line separating raving insanity and lucid moments of ingenuity. The issue is I've no idea which is which mostly.
  11. Theoretically yes you're right sir. But the A3186 movement is more complex and problematic. They have not gotten it right yet but the issue CAN be fixed aftermarket. 16. If visual accuracy is more important to you, get the A23J version. If working chrono is important to you, get the A7750. I tread softly along the fine line separating raving insanity and lucid moments of ingenuity. The issue is I've no idea which is which mostly.

  18. There is no meaningful or tangible benefit of using 904L grade steel on reps, or even most gens. 316L/F steel is enough to last a lifetime if properly cared for. Dive watches can be made out of higher grade steel to better resist corrosion, but most watches do not need anything more than 316 grade steel. It is a marketing hype and yes I agree with one of the above opinions, that this move by the rep makers is mostly to enable them to milk more money out of buyers, period. 19. Just an update if anyone is still curious about the case: My credit card company called me yesterday and informed me that they have formally closed the case and that the investigation outcome has determined that seller has not carried out due diligence in ensuring the delivery of the watch to me. The credit card company has also noted the Paypal identity of the seller and put a red flag against any transactions with him done through PayPal funded by their credit cards of their company, and have advised Paypal to do the same. It was more of a formal closure than any unexpected changes. The issue is now completely settled on my end. For seller, I understand that the watch is still with DHL Singapore and this thought is persistently going through my mind: if the parcel really contained a high value build, why has seller not put in effort to retrieve the parcel and have it returned to him in Australia? It's an overnight affair. I tread softly along the fine line separating raving insanity and lucid moments of ingenuity. The issue is I've no idea which is which mostly.
  20. A watch is a personal statement and we wear and judge it for ourselves. Most of the meticulously built frankens here have very interesting histories and the journey is a salient part of this hobby. 21. Well said my friend. Except that I do not doubt for an instant that you could definitely simply go out and purchase the gen of any watch you wish. The fact is that building frankens are just more fun, minor inaccuracies at the end or not. Used gens are often not perfect either. What matters is that we build and wear these watches for ourselves, and we sometimes share our builds with others. Such projects are undertaken with personal pride and should be appreciated by all in the hobby, along with constructive comments on how to further improve or perfect them. This is what the forum should be about, and not a showdown of who has the better or more accurate build. We all could go out and purchase gens and be done with it, but where's the fun in that if we do that all the time right? 22. I understand that. It would help if you could make a short introduction on yourself, gain knowledge and share alike. That's what the forum is for. Not for newbies to gain knowledge and then leave, like so many others before you. Have a lovely day. I tread softly along the fine line separating raving insanity and lucid moments of ingenuity. 24. Guys thanks for all your input. It's interesting to see just how much the hobby has progressed, enough for a franken watch to be mistaken for a gen. It is a happy thing for us. Given the fact that the pics are static ones on the forum, where details could be scrutinized at leisure, a well built franken in the wild would be much much harder to call out. For those of you still curious, the gen is on the left. The one on the right has almost everything gen except the midcase and bracelet. So there you have your answer. Thank you guys for participating, except for@vipassana, who thought that both watches "don't look gen". You've missed the point of the thread, Mr Vipasanna. The point is that the rep game has come very far and the worth of the gen becomes debatable to guys with resources and patience to build such frankens. I know @alteporsche has another such hulk franken and that is another impressive piece that would pass as a gen in the wild on the wrist. Kudos to guys like him and@blackboxes. The dedication and passion in guys like them are truly inspiring! I tread softly along the fine line separating raving insanity and lucid moments of ingenuity.
