Again congrats on the new house Gunnar. Have a safe and happy family trip to Italy, my favorite EU country to visit. Been down one coast and up the other on my journeys. I love Firenze too.

The "experts" Area Is Not Accomplishing What It Should Do...
omni replied to RWG Technical's topic in The looney bin
I believe that just saying "read, read, read" is not the answer. Being friendly to newbies might just take a little group effort from the well-informed membership by just posting a link for an obvious question "You'll find your answer in the EXPERT AREA. If as a whole, members could guide others to the Expert Area it would become a better rote memorized mantra, much like "read, read, read", which usually comes across as exasperation. Even making the Expert Area more visible will not do it because most members, old & new, have the habit of bypassing the opening page and just going straight for the "New Posts" button because of the amount of traffic. -
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Prior to dolphins and porpoises used for the entertainment purposes of TV shows, water shows and the like, we humans never gave a humane thought about these intelligent animals being killed for food. Now the world has a conscious guilt of cruelty against killings of "flipper." Its unfortunate that the Dall's porpoise shown being slaughtered (not a dolphin but of the same cetacean family) is not an endangered species or else more international government pressure could be used, but that hasn't stopped Japan from doing yearly "scientific" hunts of whales and Norway from still conducting commercial whaling against an IWC ban. In nature "herding" of groups, trusting or non-trusting and then wholesale slaughtering is well, just that, natural, cruelty is not a factor. Dolphins and porpoises use sonar to herd schools of fish to eat, but humans believe we have evolved above nature to have consciousness of cruelty and will step out of the food chain in the process of self-rightousness. In reality, we humans are just more efficient at killing than other natural predators and have the responsibility of conserving the resources, thus we ban killing or we farm animals for our needs (its more "humane.") Japanese culture revolves around consuming seafood, sea mammals, etc. and changing that culture will come with time or forced time from overhunting. Then it won't stop, you might see them "farming" porpoises for consumption against international protest. But if you've ever toured a cattle "slaughterhouse" in person, there really is no difference. We humans are a funny lot in our rationalizations.

A few different theories, but mine is that it is a more symetrical design using IIII instead of IV. But here is some good reading on it. http://www.ubr.com/clocks/faq/iiii.html

I thought I read somewhere that the "Nautilus" was supposed to be fashioned after a ship's porthole, can't remember where I read that but it does resemble one which oughta garner a few more comments!

I did notice that the wife is 15 years older than the husband she shot. I guess Ashton Kutcher better take heed of his toy-boy status with Demi Moore.

I have exactly the same one as thedoctor, mine was from river. It is different in person, and really appears small compared to my other watches because of the case height. But it is one of the most accurate reps. in fit and finish out there with the crown being the only noticeable flaw.

As compared to the usual $369 price, Yes.

As TTK said: "No problem in my office...." Okay, so I'll rub it in, I have a killer bar in my offices. Two-Tone got a noon-time Grey Goose and cranberry when he visited while I toasted with a martini. Then I had to get back to work after he left, normal day.

Very interesting topic. I think Quarks has it right, you really don't need to waste brain cells to explain your reasons for rep. buying, its all personal feelings. Besides the original question was would you buy a rep of a gen you "owned"? I answered the question only for the specifics of my personal situation, not anyone elses. I'm "interested" in a lot of watches and am fascinated by horology, that's all. But I add a question out there for the rep. collectors that may back my "test-drive" practice; "How many reps have you purchased that after putting on your wrist and wearing for a while you weren't all that excited about, not because of the rep quality but because of the kind of watch it was, size or shape?" Examples for me have been Omega BroadArrow, loved the beauty of the dial in pics and at AD "try-on", but after a month I hated the look "on me", seemed so bland and boring. Breitling Navitimer - being a geek at heart, the gadget feature of the slide rule bezel was the draw, except with my failing eyesight I found I had to use a loupe to work and that just took all the fun and enthusiasm out of it for this model. For those gens that have no reps, you're stuck with visiting ADs to cop a short feel.
-
Agreed, reps never can compare with the feeling of the gen. so I give them (the reps) away as gifts and never sell them. I don't keep the reps around as a banger spare. I just don't have the $$$$$ fear of gens getting scratch from everyday wear. Afterall, I drive $$$$ cars everyday to work and don't keep them in the garage afraid of dings. As you say, a different perspective.
-
No, I buy gens of replicas I've "owned." Reps affords me an economical way of trying them first without wasting money on a gen I might lose interest in later or have remorse for purchasing. Therefore it becomes a studied purchase instead of a on-a-whim purchase.

The genuine in the photos has a modified Glycine GTS bracelet attached (curved endlinks ground-down-to-fit). Glycine at this time does not make a bracelet for the Airman 7. The replica has a modified Panerai bracelet attached and is 2 years old. It now appears the later replicas are powered by 3 auto-wind Asian movements rather than the earlier 2 quartz movement version pictured. The genuine are only made in black or silver faces, no white or blue faces exists except in replicas. In combination with the black or silver face the genuine can be ordered with either black, blue, white, crème, copper or yellow dial faces. Other new additions to this line are the GOLD with an 18 ct. rose gold case; the DIAMOND with diamond encrusted case and face; and the new CROSSWIRE, main and subdials are switched left to right on the face plus dial faces (rather than just the hands) are full superluminova in blue, orange or yellow. The genuine is mainly a brushed SS case with only the case edge polished. The replica is fully polished. “Glycine is a company who remain enthusiastic and at the forefront of unique and bold new designs. Launched in 2002, the Airman 7 has been a brave step for Glycine, but one that has paid off for them as it has been a runaway success. It is a large watch primarily designed for pilots, navigators, traders or anybody else who needs to view multiple time zones simultaneously. The Airman can display four time zones in a single dial. There are three separate automatic movements powering the three different watches under the same dial. The large dial displays the local time in a 24 hour clock. It also has an independently settable second time zone hand, which is the red hand. This is powered by a ETA 2893 automatic winding movement. The other two dials are also independent time zones but in twelve hour formats. As they each have their own movements, they are of course independent of each other and the main local time dial. They each have an ETA 2671 automatic winding movement. It has a sapphire crystal to the front and the display back. The water resistance is 5 ATM. It is a large and substantial wristwatch, not really suitable to be worn on narrow wrists, but looks spectacular, unique and a most definite conversation piece on medium or large wrists. Dimensions are 53 mm wide, 60 mm lug to lug and 12 mm thick.” – Excerpt from www.chronomaster.co.uk Glycine SA Airman 7 specs – http://www.glycine-watch.ch/uploadfiles/EN_1000BP.pdf

Thin Crowns And Other Assorted Problems.....i Ask Why?
omni replied to chad's topic in General Discussion
Kudos to the contributors to this thread. It has made the most intelligent and entertaining read I've found in a long time on a lot of rep. forums. -

In answer to the question of this thread, up to $20,000 for a gen. Over that and I'd have to think about it. Regarding a rep. it really doesn't matter because we aren't wearing them to impress people are we? We just like to wear reps because we are all WISheads and will gladly let people know its a rep. so sky's the limit. Yeah Right!

Okay Pugwash, I'm guilty as charged of American arrogance. I've changed my profile, couldn't find "Hawaii" as a country so had to settle for USA.
-
So you are saying all rich people are snobs? I am going to make a sweeping statement that it might be a geographic divide between East and West. I digress: In the USA, the Rolex and to a lesser extent the Cartier brand, is really where your statement partially fits, lots of folks buy these watches to show as a symbol that they've "made it" and for no other reason except to be in your face. I deem them a minority, they usually know nothing about the watch, who have heard it is the best money can buy. This is a sad fact for true Rolex fans who appreciate the watch for what it is. In the US most luxury brand watches aren't even known by the person on the street. You can't imagine the amount of people in the US who have never heard of Patek Phillip. In the Orient, everyone has heard of all the luxury brands, and a majority buy them for the brand name recognition only. But it seems it is a societal thing there, everyone wants to show off when they've made it. But my experience in this country, is that a majority who buy genuines are either buying the watch because they can without thinking and really appreciate the feel or design or mechanics/history or a combination of all the aforementioned reasons. The amount of money is a secondary thought to a majority of purchasers of luxury items. If you have the money to be in that rarified buying atmosphere for Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Porsche, etc., believe me, you'll choose which one because of the car, not the cost. I'm sorry I can't speak for the European members but I'm sure my last statement would ring true there too.

I've had the Breguet Tourbillion rep. with this same movement for over 20 months and it has been reliable and keeps good time. Acquired from an RWG member who originally purchased it from Paul/Aspire.

Oh my, I just caught this thread after not having checked in for a while and almost missed it among the jillions of posts I've had to go through. Been on a long business trip to Cabo of all places and just got back. Wow, didn't know so many of you still remembered me, very appreciated. Much Mahalo as we say here in Hawaii.

So if he (Blade) delivered from China, then that means he is currently in China obviously, it was innocent question of curiosity and not because I had some hidden facts I'm keeping from everyone, a touchy subject for touchy people I see. Soooo, what does that mean for you if Blade has fullfilled his responsibility to you personally, will you keep up the fight or let it go? Another curious question on a touchy subject for touchy people.
