First a disclaimer... I have not purchased a rep in quite a while, not because of concerns with respect to child labor... I just haven't. But this article from the Times which includes a discovery in Guangdong Province, disturbs me and for now at least seals the deal. This makes me sick. Until I know more, I am out of the market for reps. Sorry if this does not belong in this section, but I wanted to make sure it got the attention it deserved. Moderators please feel free to move it if you think it should. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/01/world/as...amp;oref=slogin May 1, 2008 Child Labor Cases Uncovered in China By DAVID BARBOZA SHANGHAI

Thanks for all the responses and especially to Nanuq for all the research.. that was way beyond the call.. i really appreciate it. I live in the city but near a bike path and will mostly use it for exercise and riding along the hudson, so I am probably less concerned about theft and wear and tear than what you might think. I'll do some research based on your feedback. Thanks again.

Hi, I am considering purchasing a bicycle to tool around the streets of NYC with, but I have no idea as to what to look for. I want something that is sturdy enought to withstand the rigors of the NYC streets although most of my cycling will be along bike paths. It should be muti-speed, sturdy and comfortable. Any ideas as to make and model? Thanks

They are out there, but they go fast. You really have to be jonny on the spot. I have one, and it is my favorite rep even without mods (although I think I have to get those done too)

I have to say, I am shocked at where this has gone. I left last night to what appeared to be semi-civil but direct discourse, and woke up to find some hard-core sniping, and I am not really sure I understand why. Makes me feel like there is an undercurrent of tension somewhere else that I missed. I think we need to take a collective breadth here, this is the kind of stuff discussion that pulls forums like this apart. I really don't get the vitriol.. the suggestion was seemingly an innocuous one, to document in high-level terms those attributes that separate a quality rep from a POS. There was recognition expressed that this would constitute a significant effort and represent a significant contribution to the board. In other words, no one HAS to do it

I hope not.. as i mentioned the gen is one of my favorites of all time.. no i do not have one. I will say i am dubious about buying gold plated reps though. I have 2 and am not really happy with the quality of the "heavy plating" and "wrapping" That could be the reason why many members shy away from gold.

Do people prefer a rep. over a preowned gen?
eddhead replied to supermoves's topic in General Discussion
Of course it depends on the gen and it depends on the rep...but generally i'ld go with the gen if i could. -
hmm.... not sure what to make of that, but ok! I agree. The viability of collecting completely comprehensive and grandular information onto a single document is low, but the collection of the type of basic information we regularly talk about in posts throughout this site (crown guards, rehaut, date mag.. etc... ) would would help our newer members distinguish between high-end reps and the.. well... not so high end and serve to protect against scams. Can't be a bad thing. Honestly for some models this can probably be done by expanding upon or repositioning some of the themes outlined in several of By-Thors excellent reviews.

The point of posting a consolidated 'cheat sheet' so to speak is.. well just that.. to consolidate all the good information available on posts throughout the site onto a single document in order to facilitate easy access to that information. It would be a major convenience and I agree with Victoria that it would provide signiicant value add. It is also however a lot of work. Still, if there is someone out there willing to, or desireous of putting such a document together I think it would constitute significant service to the community at large. Just my 2 cents... don't kill me over it.

Not for anything, but if you plan on selling your watch on this forum you will need to upgrade anyway, so why not do it now? It really does not cost much for a one month upgrade. Otherwise one could presume you are as Kenberg indicated, attempting to sell thru the backdoor, i.e. using the site to sell the watch without posting it on the forum.

Took the words right out of my keyboard so to speak... Don't you think Omega paid the producers of James Bond a hefty some to have Dan Craig prominantly display thier products during this high-profile movie? And don't you think the publicity was worth it... think about the countless millions world-wide who viewed the film and now associate James Bond with Omega. That is priceless publicity. And it happens all the time with brands like BMW, Grey Goose, Beer brands... next time you are at a movie, pay attention to the products the actors use, and make a note as to wheater or not the brand label is displayed. If so, that constitutes a subliminal advertisement and I guarantee you someone paid handsomely for the privlege.

Thanks for the review. I have purchased MB pens from Narikaa before and found they did not measure up to his normally high standards, but based on this message I may give it another shot.

I do not have it, but this is probably the gen i most want right now.
-
sorry, i do not agree. i will wear ratty jeans and tee-shirts with my gen 5513 all the time.. .if people think it is a rep for that reason, they are mistaken. and i doubt i am alone. p.s. i am not above going to applebees either ...

Love the matte dial on the second, but the markers on the first are excellent. As a total package I prefer the 1st.

I am not sure if this is the same Vernon Williams or not.. i tried to google his name thru my company pc and IP found him referenced on a page called faithfreedom.org and could not access the site because it was identified as a "hate speech" site by our corporate filters. Sorry, but that makes me a bit suspicious about his objectivitiy.

There are many people in Western Society who will tell you that they believe in a strict interpetation of the scriptures. In the US, several Republican candidates Mike Hukabee principally among them explcitily stated they beileve in a literal word for word interpetation without allogorical allowances.. well... I wonder if those who believe in the absolute literal translation of the bible would advocate putting to DEATH people who worship other Gods, , who dishonor their parents, who have sex with women during their period?(Leviticus) I mean do Huckabee and the rest really advocate stoning sinners to death?? Do they also advocate the death of males who disobey their parents? Or women who are raped but do not cry out? (Deuteronomy) How about the death of persons who touch Mont Sinai? How about stoning to death people who do not worship on the Sabbath? Or putting to death whole cities who do not surrender to attacks (Exodus) And trust me, there is plenty more where that came from especially on the subject of homsexuality. I am not trying to stir up a debate about the degree of violence and intolerance to any religous dogma when interpetted in absolute terms... if you look hard enough (and you really do not have to look all that hard actually) you'll find it. I do not believe there is anything more inherently intolerant about Islam vis-a via other religons. But the combination of Governent and Religon is dangerous . It nurtures demidogs. To me that is where the rubber meets the road. When relgion becomes an institutional part of government, there is a potential for pervisonk, creatign a tool for tyrants to manipulate people. That is what we see today in Islamic fundamentalist states.

True, but the author of this aticle does consider them a part of the EU trading block. As you know, Norway is an EXPORTER of oil however, and as such has minimal if any dependency on Gulf Oil. @ teejay I do not agree with your premise that the board is largely comprised of islamophobes. refer to my other teddy post.

Wow. I agree that you cannot apologize for people or whole cultures who perpetrate such acts. Regardless of your political or social orientation, some things are just morally wrong and people need to stand up to the fact these acts cannot be tolerated in a civilized world. But please do not make this a liberal vs. conservative issue. Your political orientation has nothing to do with how you feel on this topic. And by the way, I do know Muslims who are equally horrifed about what is happening to this poor woman. And conflating the Iraq war with this event perpetrates the myth that somehow US involvement in Iraq is a justified tactic in the war on terror. It is not. Pre-war Iraq was an unhappy place for a lot or people but it was not a sanctuary for the types of fundamental Islamic activites we get from places like Sudan and Saudi. Indeed Iraq was a secular society and a provided a stronghold AGAINST the wahabism that fuels these activities. As for Abu-Ghaib .. .sorry but that is just not acceptable, not from anyone, but most especially not from representives of the leaders of the free world. We are supposed to be better than that. I suppor the troops too. I think they are heros. And we are wasting their lives and their efforts.
