  1. agree with pug... live and let live... that advice would apply to people on the gen forums with regard to us as well.
  2. Great read. Hard to argue... as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks.
  3. and by the way, it is not a cousteau.
  4. Best reply yet.
  5. 5-6" seems fine to me.. Oh you meant length!!! that is different. Nevermind!!
  6. Sorry about not responding sooner, I have been overworked of late. Honestly, I am not sure what the answer is. All I can say, is that for the reasons highlighted previously, member contributions in the form of VIP upgrades or donations are far more important to this site than they may otherwise be were we a commercial site reliant upon non-voluntary subscriptions and advertising. No one (at least not me) is telling anyone who's financial situation does not support making monetary contributions that they should do so anway.. i am not presumptuous enough to suggest that all of us have the wearwithall for that or to understand our indivisdual financial responsiblities, priorities and family situations. But if you can do it and if it is finacially viable to do so, you really should. Member contributions are all that we have. We take an awful lot out of this place, it is only right to put some back in.
  7. I wear a watch everyday, but my girlfriend never does, and God knows I have offered to buy her some very expensive watches. She claims if she wore one, she would be obsessive about the time, checking it constantly etc...
  8. The one on the right is definetly a noob LV. the one on the left... not really sure....
  9. I like this game!
  10. Sorry it took so long for me to see this. Have been kind of busy. @Mezz: While, I think you have some very creative thoughts with respect to bolstering the financial position of the site I think you have to remember that unlike some of the commercial sites that may have inspired your ideas, ours is a not for profit venture. As a result, revenue generating alternatives offered by the likes of NY Times, AOL, Salon.com etc.. may not be appropriate here. For this site to remain viable it is important for the adminstrative team be non-biased agnostic to providers, profit and influence. To me this implies providing as little adverstising as possible. For the same reason,we also need to be very carefull about adminstrators moving product. A second point: given this is a non-commercial venture our reliance on membership donations is different than it might otherwise be because we lack external revenue sources (nevermind profit) to off-set the cost of delivery. I think people's expectations with respect to contributing on an "internet forum" should be guided accordingly. I am not telling anyone they should or should not contribute. I understand everyone's circumstances are different... i mean let's face it, if it comes down to donating $50 here, or putting food on the table for your kids.. I mean there is no decision to be made. But I do think it is important for people to at least understand why the donations count.
  11. Sorry I am just getting around to this.. what a terrific review!! Great service to the board!!
  12. Real good points. What made WW II a "good war" was the lack of public ambivalance over the necessity to fight. Prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, there was a great deal of public discourse on the approriateness of US intervention in what was percieved to be primarly European and Asian conflicts, but that all changed after the attack. What I think Burns did well, was portray a sense of common mission and purpose both within the military and on the domestic front. This is especially timely when considered in contrast to the Iraq war. I also think he did an excellent job of just plain story telling. And I agree with your other point as well. Unfortunetly, what we often forget was the horrible mistreatment of African American comatants and Japanese-American citizens.
  13. I do not know if I have a theme, but for reps, it is a flight to quality and value. For the most part this means ETA movements (but not exclusivly) with clean classic looks. I have: -a PAM 029 with a 2892 movement that I was lucky enough to get at a value price -TW Best 2 toned sub with a 2824 -Cartier Roadster with same movement -4th and 5th gen Planet Oceans -TTK's LV noobmariner with a 21J Asian Movement (yes this is the exception but it is a beautiful watch) (on order) JLC Rose Gold Mastger Controller wannabe I also have a couple of nice gens, but i do not evaluate those the same way, i.e. simplicity and value, because I tend to have more confidence in the complications holding up on the gens than i do on the reps.
  14. i love this watch.. especially the lv... it is the best buy out there... wish the rehaut was a bit deeper though...
  15. 9/14... i have to admit, there are a some pretty cute looking elbows in that thread 8-)
  16. I had the converse experience but it still proves your point. My g/f purhcased a gen 5513 as a gift to me last year. I went into a very well known ad just to verify it was genuine. a very distinguised older sales person told me that given the quality of replicas coming our of China and other far east locations, niether he nor anyone else in that store could verify the watches authenticity with absolute certainty unless they removed the case examined the movement and found the serial number. Let me reiterate, this is a very nice watch store, in fact I prefer it to Tournuea. They sell full line of Rolexes, Cartiers, and other luxury brand watches and they have been in business for over 50 years.
  17. Well let's suppose for a moment that you are correct... does that make the programming any less insulting? Does it make the reaction any more acceptable? I never suggested those attacks were not perpetrated on a "great city" I have visited London many times and am a huge fan. That is not the point. The difference is in terms of scope an magnitude. The London landscape (or sky scrape as it is) was not forever changed as a result of 7/7. The present day London economy has fully recovered from any harm suffered to over a short-term if at all. And yes the numbers of lost do count when assessing the overall impact of the event. Finally the symbolism of simoultaneoulsy hijacking 3 jumbo jets and flying them into highly visible targets of high governement and business targets is significant. I do not feel the same way about the first World Trade Center bombing (which I was also in the city for) nor do i feel simarlarly about Oaklahoma city. But this was different in terms of orders of magnitude, and symbolism, and yes that counts. But let's pretend it did not for a moment. I promise you that if US sponsored programming aired a documentary highlighting the atrocities of British armed forces on 7/7, I would be outraged. And if someone on this forum, posted a message expressing thier outrage, I would not suggest that person was over reacting.
  18. And that in fact is the source of my complaint. I do not care that folks in Europe do not mark the date.. I don't expect that. .. I completely understand how it is less than eventfull for people who do not live in the US BUt France 3 was way out of line ... why is their no outrage directed toward France 3? Not only that, but when one of our members expressed outrage of his own, he was promptly informed that he was over reacting. He was not over reacting anymore than if the attack had occurred on French, or British or whatever soil.
  19. Actually, I have seen the Cousteau diver for under USD 7K at an IWC boutique in Hong Kong. The issue is finding one.
  20. As have we. There was the FALN bombing of Fraunces Tavern in the 70's, the bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City in 1996, Various Unabomber escapades, and the first World Trade Center bombing in the vista hotel in 1993 orchestrated by Ramzi Yousef. All very tragic but again in terms of scope and macro level impact, they do not compare. Look, I do not want to get into a debate about which is the worse attack. But if you think our reaction is based on our 'lack of experience' you are mistaken. I will go back to my original point. The France 3 telecast was tasteless under the circumstances, and any rationalization or defense of it is at the very east misguided. I actually don't which is one reason why I was so taken back by the responses.
  21. Either way, it was a nice gesture on Vbarret's part.
  22. double post
  23. I have "plenty of perspective on this", and to be clear, I do not expect the world to mourne to the same degree that US citizens do. In fact, I do not even expect them to note it. What I find completely unacceptable is the callous airing of a documentary highlighting the real or peceived atrocities of US armed forces on a day of national mourning in the US. Have a little respect. And speaking of perspective the association of 7/7 to 9/11 is way off the mark. I realize that to anyone who lost a loved one any day of loss is tragic, and I am certainly not minimizing anyone's personal loss. But a from a more objective, macro level perspective they are not at all comparable. On 9/11 4000 people lost their lives, hundreds or thousands of others saw their small businesses go under, and the economies on the NYC area generally, and downtown especially went into a tailspin we have still not recovered from. You want perspective? Picture the simoultaneous attacks of 10 Downing Street, Canary Wharf, and the Parliment causing the loss of thousands of lives, and displacing hundreds of businesses, jobs, and residential apartments for extended periods of time. That is your analogy. But notwithstanding the difference in scope and dimension, I would find any similar programming targeted toward British armed forces in Iraq on 7/7 to be equally offensive But that is not the point. Ryannon started out by decrying the programming of France 3 on 9/11 and was immediatly told it was no big deal. Well it is a big deal.
  24. It is ironic, but at a time when you are contemplating leaving this thread i am taking it upon myself to into it. Sorry, the issue was too emotional for me to respond to a few days back, and to be honest with you I was kind of enraged at the responses to your original post. The genesis of your message was that France 3 chose a particularly curious day to launch into a "documentary" on the offenses of US armed forces around the Globe, be it an accurate reflection or a slanted one which i suspect it is. In fact it was not curious at all ... it was disgusting. I agree wholeheartedly. Shame on them. To several on this board and indeed around the world, 9/11 seems to represent a a day when the big bully got tweaked by the underdog. How impersonal and despicable. 4000 innocent lives were lost on a day when one of the world's great cities was attacked. I still remember looking accross the Varizzano bridge and seeing a 50 - 100 story smoldering heep where the towers used to be, days after the attack. Colleagues of mine witnessed people jumping out of buildings 100 stories up, to aviod burning to death. I work 2 blocks from the area, and live less than 1/2 mile away in mid-town Manhattan. This is very personal to me. 9/11 is not about what happened in Iraq after the fact. It is not about 7/7. It is not about all the cruel injustice in the world. It stands on its own... one of the world's great cities was attacked that day, 4000 lives were lost, and New York will never be the same. I frankly don't give a flying F if it touches you as an individual or not and I have learned long ago not to expect any sympathy from the french. But don't try to blow smoke up my a$$ with all this "documentary" b.s. or the banal 'no big deal it happens all over the world' crap either. I would not accept it if the eiffel tower were blown up and 4000 french lost their lives (God forbid) and I will not accept it n this case either.
