+1 on buying used. I picked up some used Ping Irons after I saw a show on how they make their clubs. No rep maker is going to go to all that trouble. Plus even though I'm a hack, I do like a good feel on my clubs.

Looks awesome! I don't think it was crazy at all. I see these PVD/DLC PAMs on the gen forums from time to time. I think the most important thing in a project like this is to do it for a watch you want to keep. I lot of time and money goes into modding these, but most I've seen sell secondhand are usually the same or less than a non-modded watch. I think it looks stunning and very military like. Probably looks great with everything from a dirty tshirt to a nice black suit.

Panerai never made a bracelet for the fiddy. You may find a knock off 26mm bracelet that will fit the case, but it will probably end up scratching the heck out of the case and will be an instant tell that the watch is a fake. Personally, I think the fiddy looks great on a strap. I would keep it that way for the sake of the case.

Have you contacted any other dealers besides DSN? That would be my first try. You could put a wanted ad in the sales section or look out for a spare case that would have a crystal in it.

You can buy springbars on ebay. I bought a whole bunch for my gen PO 45.5. I think I got 50 of them for $7 shipped. That was the minimum quantity.

The guy probably didn't have the proper caseback tool and it probably wasn't worth his time. He probably used the first excuse the could think of. When you say your watchmaker in the mall, I hope they are not an AD.

I went with the 111. I bought an F series to get the PaneraiPaneraiPanerai decoration. I think that's a must if you get the 111. The manual wind has never bothered me, but I don't wear my watch daily, but in a rotation with a few others. Personally, I like the 111 much better than the 104, but lately i've been digging the base models for thier simplicity. If you need the date function go ahead with 104, but otherwise I'd go with the 111.

I remember back a couple years ago a member had a crown strip so he customized the crown so it couldn't strip again. I think he basically took all the threads off the crown so it couldn't screw in. If I remember correctly he shortened the tube and the stem so the crown sat close to the case. I'm 100% positive that this pretty much took away most if not all the water resistance of the watch, but he wore it everyday and only had to pull the crown to wind and push it back in to wear. I'm fairly positive that Zig could probably do this mod while replacing the cannon and doing the SL.

I just picked up a GMTIIC gen it had no hologram and no etching. I'm sure as hell it's real. Rolex holograms are a joke anyway. The only time holograms were cool was 20 years ago back in '89 when Upper Deck put them on all their baseball cards as an anti-copy device.

Wow this is an awesome fantasy model! Even if they made a gen it would be out of my price range. Agreed, a bit or red or bright orange (PO style) on the tip of the seconds hand would be pretty cool. Please keep the pics coming!

I would guess that's an older Josh dial/case only because of the slightly lower bars on the "A's" Watch looks phenomenal! Zig's vintage tritium look is awesome! You should show some movement pics. The square bridges are correct for this model making it spot on for the gen.
