  1. The Porto is a STUNNING watch...but has a timebomb movement that may die within 6 months...or last a year if you're lucky. Some have had success having a graphite treatment to reduce the premature wear that the bear metal gears experience because of the movement mod to move the running seconds to the 6-o-clock position. The Carrera as an alternative is beautiful. Much more beautiful in person than the pics show. I have the Carrera racing (black with red hands)...awesome. Consider as well, the Ebel Discovery in the panda style.
  2. It likely is a cheap Asian movement that any watchmaker should be able to repair. Just contact small (non authorized dealer) watchmakers and ask if they can do a movement replacement on a generic Chinese movement watch. The movement is likely <$20, and the swap should be <$50. It's not worth servicing because of the cost of the movement. Welcome to RWG.
  3. I use my SSD and Sub for swimming all the time. My SMP Chrono failed the pressure test even after greasing. My Cousteau Diver passed, but had a potential leak problem because of loose fit chrono pushers (if they got depressed it would leak...but not pushed...ok...just be careful it doesn't get bumped).
  4. Does giving up buying mean giving up participating in this watch community? The buying of watches is only a part of the experience. The reading about projects, technical info, excitement of others new acquisitions, etc...namely all the things associated with participating in a community of shared interest you should definitely not give up on. I think what she is saying is: Buy the Daytona Keep participating in RWG and other forums as you see fit Stop buying REPS Start buying more GENS Post about the gens here on RWG
  5. Big congrats. You got a good one with nice straight markers. Yup...it's an expensive ride from here.
  6. A classic for sure. Good stuff. Congrats and wear it well.
  7. Like Ubi said making is the best, but requires a very skilled watchmaker experienced in modding things to fit, sourcing hard to find parts, and spending upwards of $4000 USD. If you're willing to take a chance on the Seconds at 6 movement...any of the dealers recommended here in the "collectors" section should be able to help. There are no dealers in the USA. They all come from China. If you're lucky, you might find one in the "Watches" section from another member in the US.
  8. See my reply in your other thread: HERE
  9. OOOH...I was just about to say "Use Search" but I saw you upgraded to Platinum after just joining today. Awesome. Thanks for taking ownership of the forum and helping keep it alive. Because of that...I shall be your guide on the journey to Rep-Land. First stop: Read the Noob Guide linked in my signature for an introduction to reps, rep buying, and about meeting your expectations. Second stop: Decide which Daytona you are talking about. Some that use the movement modification with the running seconds at the 6-o-clock subdial have a flaky movement (not reliable). By-Tor's Seconds at 6 Daytona Review If you're talking vintage, the options aren't great without spending a lot of money. The issue is that the dial quality on 6263's for example isn't great without spending a lot of money. If you are interested in the 6263 look but aren't too concerned with high accuracy, there is still a nice 6263 available with a very reliable Seagull manual wind movement...but the writing of the ROLEX and the coronet are too large compared with the gen. You have to decide if such flaws on a rarely seen watch are deal breakers for you. If you are willing to spend lots of money, you can build an essentially genuine 16520 or 16523 for about half the price (with the same movement): Who to buy from is personal preference. Read the trade review section for the different reviews of the various dealers. Good luck on the journey...it really is that. It's not like popping into Wal-Mart.
  10. Aaah...the Super Noob Question. So many questions...too many answer to give. The question you really want to answer for YOURSELF is: Will the design of the Invicta beat the design of the high end brands? If you need it for swimming or diving...the chronos you are considering in the Invicta line may well be better as many of the chrono reps do not pass pressure tests. It's hit and miss. If you are able to have a dedicated water watch, and want a nicer dry-land watch...I think a scan of the reviews of watches on this site will open your eyes to the beauty of some of the watches out there in Rep-Land. Who to buy from? Read the Noob Guide linked in my signature to get you started. You just found yourself the best watch forum around. The most knowledgeable and helpful. Consider yourself lucky!! Do yourself a favour and read the various reviews in the different brand sections, search for more reviews and you will have a whole new world of amazing watches open before you.
  11. Beautiful pieces. That 5513 is something else.
  12. Beautiful. Good to see you posting again!! That is a nice set. How do you like the bracelets?
  13. If you're up for some fun...dive in. There's an article on regulating or adjusting the beat in the Noob Guide linked in my signature. That will get you started. Try that. BUT...bear in mind, the adjustments on the arm are VERY SMALL...AND, 5-10 minutes off in 0.5 days is likely more than can be adjusted by regulating. But, you can play around and see how it works.
  14. I haven't seen that one in a high end version. I'm sure an El Cheapo version exists. It's a bit too 'cartoonish' for me.
  15. It is satisfying when you can do some of the work yourself. Congrats! It's a great piece.
  16. Believe me...with RWG you are never alone. You have found yourself an amazing community of watch enthusiasts...that happen to dabble in reps. Given that you can't get decent reps easily sourced in N.A....you're ordering through the web and from China, it doesn't matter that you don't have suppliers at your doorstep. As long as you can get mail...you're good to go. Read my Noob Guide...search, learn and share.
  17. Very nice. When I saw the pics on the site, I didn't think much of it. These are much nicer, and bring out the classiness of the watch. It has a nice vintage feel to it, yet the font and size also updates it a bit.
  18. Seriously. I quite valued both of their contributions!! I think they're probably holed up in the bottom of the Trump Princess with Elvis.
  19. As B16 says...cheap movement...either replace it, deal with it...or better yet...break into your neighbour's place and get the new PO Chrono!! You will notice a world of difference...I hope.
  20. That looks AWESOME. It's funny. The crystal on the old ones is something that rarely gets captured properly in most pics of the gen and rep. You really don't see the effect of that domed plexy on the overall look unless you see it in person, but your pics capture it more than usual. That looks great!! What's the secret formula??
  21. Heh heh...you really are the Artist formerly known as something else who was formerly known as an unacceptable moniker.
