Fake discussion at TZ-UK

There is a discussion now at TZ-UK about reps... some people claim to be members of rep forums... and some pics are really familiar, they must have been posted here or on other rep forums of ours...

I though it may be of interest for you:

Surprisingly they seem kind of cool about that unless they ar enot being sold as a real deal.

I also like their thoughts about how overpriced gens are when u compare them with our reps...

Wo-oh! We have some under-cover GEN lover here in our midst :wounded1:<_< ! Holly Crap! That's scary! :thumbsupsmileyanim:

Thanks for the link! That was quite a read!

Yeh, that was a BIG read!

Probably not so bad that some of the gen lovers visit from time to time, at least an alternative POV gets made on those fora. As long as others are not compelled to put pressure on our hobby (which would be awfully hard in this place), maybe there may be a recognition that some of us do know a little about watches and repairing same.whistling.gif

What they fail to see, is that so many of the "Swiss" brands, are now actually made in China.

And that every time someone buys a new Rolex, a fair portion of the profit goes straight to advertising and promo.

Some of their Rolex collectors would own a boat or two, or at least have shares in one, in the next Sydney to Hobart fleet.rolleyes.gif

Thats a good read and good to see it from the "other" sides point of view.

The best thing is seeing that it wasnt just a slating for rep owners.

As long as people dont get rep owners confused with the scum who sell reps as a way of ripping people,we'll be ok.

Unfortunately there are some "Gen" forums who do seem to think this way.

I'm not all the way through the thread yet, but it's good to see that the discussion so far has been reasonable, and this post in particular caught my eye:

Re: Fakes - cop yourself on.

by NJH on Thu Dec 10, 2009 5:58 pm

Exactly. The deeper point here is that if the super fakes are made to such a high quality that many ppl can't tell the difference then why do we spend so much on the real thing. Who is pulling off the bigger con, the chinese faker or the swiss brand (probably using the same chinese factory anyway)?

This is why I don't buy gen. Or rather, why I didn't buy gen when my pockets were deep enough, and why I definitely wouldn't buy gen if they ever were deep enough in the future :victory:

A very interesting read for sure and exceedingly reasonable compared to similar threads elsewhere. Also I'm pretty much with TeeJay regarding the quote above - I have never actually considered buying a genuine watch, other that Seikos and such up to $250 or so, and I never will. For the kind of money I could afford to lay on the counter, I'd never get anything that wasn't made in China anyway. I'd only buy a genuine watch if I could actually afford one that was real haute horologie and guaranteed to be an in-house effort in its entirety; but that day will never, ever come.

I have only given the link a cursory scan, but am looking forward to absorbing it's entirety. So far I think it's refreshing.

We mock what we don't understand. Those who mock replica do not understand. Five hours browsing RWG and especially coming across posts by JoJo, Nanuq, Stephane, Freddy, many others who collect both gen and replica, and the deep understanding the majority of members here have beyond 'brand' and zeitgeist, toward calibres, brand history, and thanks to Rob what makes the things tick (pun intended) any true horologist would be impressed.

I personally don't consider RWG a 'replica' site per se` anymore. You know how much I've learned about Tudor and Doxa in the past five months? More than what is represented as 'replica'. That's for sure.

Very interesting read. Nice to see that for the most part those fellows weren't spending all their time trying to crucify the rep forums and those who participate.

I do agree with what they are saying however. the reps are getting scarily accurate, which is a good thing for us, as we don't need to sppend a fortune on mods to bring a rep up to snuff. The other darker side which they alluded to is the number of reps that are being pawned off as genuine watches. That is reprehensible behavior, and is truly fraud of the highest order. I would be hard pressed to buy a rolex on Ebay this day and age, unless the seller was known to me, and the watch had and ironclad return guarantee. It would go to a local watchmaker the day it arrived to have the case removed and a movement check. This in itself would not insure it wasn't a franken, but it would be easy to see if the movement wasn't genuine Rolex.

It does look like several of the posters have been frequent visitors to this or other forums. the photos and description of thec SD toward the end of the thread are the new as yet unreleased WM9 Serial M 16600.

What's most noticeable in that thread is the change in attitude. In the past, The gen owners mocked the reps as inferior crap and rep owners as people without a life.

Interesting responses now. They now start to question the validity of the price of Gens. Wow...180 degrees from the past. I think that is owed to the quality the chinese have mastered. It does raise the interesting question about how this higher quality will affect gens....their mystique.....Price, etc.

Actually this is hardly surprising as we have many members who are on both rep and gen forums.

More to the point I think it's a good thing that the gen guys learn what to look for when buying watches, our mission statement is after all 'To prevent buyers from being scammed', this applies just as much to gen buyers as it does to shonky rep sites.

Interesting....Never thought of myself as the enemy considering I own gens and am a member of some gen forums. Pulled this from one of the reply s.

"Know your enemy"

"I would suggest that some here join a few of the real "Specialist" fake watch forums and find out the latest news and tricks."

Not using this avatar or user name though :whistling:

Fascinating stuff. It amazes me that some have even taken reps into an AD and had them passed as gen. Just goes to show the lines are becoming blurred. No doubt about it though, people on the rep forums in general know one hell of a lot more about the subject than the gen forum guys.

You're not wrong there :) More passion and genuine interest too, rather than just a load of "I paid xxx for this, look how awesome and perfect it is" BS :victory:
