I work with guys with Gens rolex's they cant tell the difference if I show them it (till it falls apart).

People at work know i have a replica.

Friends and family ........I'll just say........."well what do you think"......and leave it at that.

Never. If you are not wearing a $50 rep with worn down gold plating or a watch which bears no semblance to your life the likelihood is probably pretty low. And if someone is wearing one that is that obvious people don't normally ask. There is no point. You know. They either don't know (99% of the time they do) or you are just embarassing them.

Of course, if you are wearing a different watch every day in front of the same 20 people and prior to that you wore the same Timex for 3 years in front of those same 20 people...you better be claiming you won the Lottery

lol @ last post - thats a good line :)

one day i was wearing my Bentley-GT-Racing black dial and some guy approached and asked: "this is a fake right?"

the funny thing was that this guy was, wearing a very very very terrible, nightmare museum type, $30 canal street bentley big date,

and i mean- a very bad looking one, maybe even too poor for canal street too IMO.

well he insisted to take a closer look at my watch and said maybe twice "is this a real one ??" so i was thinking for my self "what would i do with this funny guy?"

i was like- "well.. i hope so" and smiled back at him =]

i believe lots of people cant tell much of a diff.

i knew a few that thought that the best way to tell a watch is a rep, is by looking on its chronos to see they are not working like they should,

some people dont know that the "more decent" reps has all functions correctly very close to gens.

some other "experts" wont be fooled by the working chrono movement and nice AR, but wont notice an over-sized crown, bezel, inner bezel, etc..

good post :)

I was called out by a watchmaker...not really called out as we were having a game and he is quite into reps now as well. The funny thing was, I asked him why he said certain watches were reps...and the things he "called me out on" were totally wrong. So...just because they call you out, odds are good, they don't know squat.

He would call out on the font, or how the hands mount, or missing "Swiss Made" lettering, etc which if you know the gens, you know the number of variations and the ones that have it or don't have whatever markings.

similar thing happened to me once

i was waiting at bar for my turn for the new poker round (not a casino, just a poor low stakes competition)

then some junkie sat away from me and said "hey, that rolex is fake" i was wearing my franken mbw 1680 (no way he could tell its rep)

and i said "yeah?how are you so sure about that" and he said " my mate is a watchmaker, wait here i get him"

then the small poor guy came and said the same thing, i laughed. he claimed that he merchanted rolexes for years. he wanted to see and i handed the watch then he was really sure its a rep.

(he claimed that by weighing the watch, he probably thinks its fake because its lighter than modern submariner, which is correct for vintage models because of plexi-crystal and riveted bracelet, they are much lighter)

i laughed again and said "so then tell me which model is this" and the rolex expert said "ermm...thats the diver model".......(ok...YOU f*ck off from here RIGHT NOW :whistling: )..... and i just kept it cool and smiled...i had to....

this same thing would happened to me if i had the gen so you cant just cure the idiot

but lesson learned, never flash expensive stuff near f*cked up low people....

I have a gen datejust with a tapestry face, which I have been wearing every day since March 1993.

I have a friend who has a TT Sub and reckons he's a watch enthusiast, so I wondered what he would think of my Skyland Avenger rep.

I asked him if he'd like to see my new "toy" and he asked if I would take it off so he could have a good look.

He studied it really closely for a few minutes, all over the front, the back, the bracelet, everything.

His comment was "Now that's what I call a MAN's watch. How much did that cost?"

I said "Too much!"

Considering the lume dot at 4 is way off on my rep and he didn't even spot it, I thought "What the hell! I didn't tell him any lies!

I've got a gen steel and gold cartier panthere that I was wearing at a large social function and "some know it all yahoo" jeweller said he could spot a fake anywhere. I took the watch off and let him examine it. He declared it was a fake to which I replied, "nope, its genuine." He looked a little sheepish, but it just goes to show you that most of the people and especially the so called "experts" don't know the difference unless they're very well versed with that particular watch brand and model. Also I live in a very small Northern community in Canada and most people here haven't even heard about Cartier. My suspicion about this guy was that he had never even seen a Cartier up close and was just trying to impress the circle of people at the table. He would have called any watch a fake to make his point.

I haven't worn any of the few Rolex reps I have owned out much, and I have never been called out wearing one of those or any other rep watch from other brands so far but...

I have owned several gen Rolex watches over the years and in fact still have one in my collection now. The funny thing is I have been called out for wearing a rep Rolex twice in my life - and both times I was wearing a gen.

I think a lot of people just assume that most Rolex watches in the wild these days are fake. And I think that is a fairly accurate statement. It's at least even money for sure, watch for watch with most any sample size...

I have not been called out on a rep yet either, but can second the above. I have friends with several (both reps and gens) and when people actually comment on the watch, they usually ask if it's real sometime during the conversation. It's what has kept me from buying a Sub despite the advances in the Euromariner and WM9/BK v2 which have come out recently.
