I got a lifetime ban from a PRS guitar forum. I had a grand total of about 5 posts, all discussing an issue I was having with pickup wiring. No reason for the ban, and the mods won't respond to me via email. Some forums border on the surreal.
Gens I've paid under $1k for include:
Oris Miles Tonneau
Oris Titan 300M
Oris Chronoris
Omega Speedmaster MKII
Glycine Incursore 200m
Ball Fireman 1
Omega Chrono 300M
Omega Automatic
Some were well under the $1k mark, and 4 were under $500. Pretty much any of the 2nd tier brands can be had cheaply used if you look around and are willing to wait.
In his servicing notes, The Zigmeister lists it as a 7730, but I think he meant 7736, as I believe the 7730 was bi-compax. In any case, the watch dates to 1973 from its serial #, and is a model 815. I've owned it for just over 5 years now. It measures in at 40mm, which is large for its age. Picture is old. The seconds chrono hand now lines up perfectly.
I do have one gen Breitling that is difficult to read, a Windrider Cockpit that is all in silver. Ironically i bought it because of the large date that I can read without my bifocals (that and the fact that I've always loved this model).
Sorry to hear of your friend, BT. It's always difficult to watch friends decline and go. I have lost many over the years, at remarkably young ages, including my 6yr old nephew from cancer.
That being said, if you think about it from a statistical point of view, the more of your peers who die young, the better your chances of living to a ripe old age...
Last time I checked the Church/Queen St. pawn shops, they had a lot of reps. They are also very up front about them - no misrepresentation. That being said, you need to do your own inspection to determine if it's a good one and worth the asking price or not.
I tried the other day to send a gen watch to The Zigmeister by courier due to the strike. They wanted almost $100, half of which was insurance, but they would only insure for $1k, or about 1/3 of its actual value. In the fine print, it said that their liability was limited to $500 only, although they would happily charge for $1k insurance. Thieves. I'm afraid this watch will have to wait until the strike is over.
Hmmm, picocuries, eh? My daily work has me dealing with 15 Curie per Kg water. Drinking lots of beer helps decrease the biological half life for what little gets picked up (given the right precautions).
Tritiated water is all around us. It occurs naturally (iirc, 1 molecule in 10,000,000 of water typically has a tritium isotope as one of its hydrogen atoms).
In all fairness to the dealers, I have been asked for a cc scan when buying over the phone from a shop in a tourist destination on the west coast of Canada a few years ago. If I hadn't worked there in the distant past and didn't know the owner personally, I probably would have said no, and taken my business elsewhere. At the time, they were getting a lot of chargebacks from people claiming never to have been on vacation there, so staff had been instructed to protect the shop.
There is a small screw that goes on the inside to secure it. That screw is likely rattling around inside your watch. You have probably also lost the spring. You must use Loctite when you replace the screw in the end of the pusher shaft, as it is what rides against the reset lever. repeated usage can and will loosen it unless Loctite is used.
That being said, I have spares of the [censored] things that you can have. PM me.
