  1. Are there any cheap hotels in Basel during Baselworld?
  2. 1. That's about right. You could consider enlarging the lugholes, but the 1601 is notoriously difficult to drill. There's not a lot of metal to work with on those skinny lugs. 2. As ogladio pointed out, you'll be fine. 3. The dial will fit on the movement, but not in the case. Yuki sells several 5500 Explorer dials, if you want to go in that route. Interestingly, genuine 5500 Explorer dials are hardly ever listed for sale. There's a guy on VRM who wants EUR 1000 for a gilt.
  3. I like the Tudor Pelagos a lot, but even that's on the high end of reason. Among new(ish) releases, if I had the money to spend, I'd be taking long looks at the Sinn 656 and the Oris Grand Prix 1970.
  4. Thanks, B, and great strap on your Speedy!
  5. In that case, let's disagree to agree!
  6. I will have to disagree slightly with PeteM here. The chronograph function adds more variables to the satisfactory operation of your rep. There are simply more things that can go wrong. But I do agree that you shouldn't avoid chronograph reps entirely, because 1) there are so many good ones out there, and 2) you can service the movements of the ones you really like.
  7. Instead of links, you can write down the auction numbers. There are a lot of sketchy vintage Omegas out there, ranging from massive 'Regulateur' pocket-watch conversions (often from Ukraine), nondescript watches with Railmaster-esque dials (lots from India), military watches of dubious provenance (Vietnam), and your everyday Planet Ocean cheap rep (everywhere--even the rogue nation of Canada).
  8. This is the first time I'm seeing this rep, but what stands out is how the pyramid texture on its subdials is much less pronounced than on the gen. Also, the hour indices that hit the subdials end sloppily. As for the mid-case, it seems to be a bit thicker than the gen, but that may be down to the movement.
  9. The Speedmaster Professional was my first 'proper' watch. It's still my favorite and -along with the Rolex Explorer- the watch that, I believe, is most reflective of my character.
  10. Reclaiming today's wrist check!
  11. In the absence of DW, your only out-of-the-box choices are the trusted dealers' SeaGull-powered Daytonas. These are nowhere near the visual accuracy of DW's Daytonas (let alone Phong-based frankens), but they might satisfy your needs. The only other good Daytona dealer I can think of is Honpo, and he's been even more elusive than DW .
  12. Fitting the Tropic 21 on the 1016 was a happy accident that occurred because, if I recall correctly, I was ordering some parts through jmb. (I was living in Asia and trying to save a few bucks in shipping costs.) When J completed his mods on both my 1601 and 16203 cases (he was working on two of my 1016 frankens simultaneously), he paired one with a Clark T22 and the other with a Clark T21--machining each bezel to match. The results were fantastic. Here are some fresh shots, with my gen 1016 on the left and the old Space-Dweller on the right. The crystals are a genuine domed Tropic 22 and a Clark T22. Optical properties are practically identical. And if you can tell the 0.5mm difference in diameter, you should probably buy a gen!
  13. I'm looking at the pictures on Yuki's site right now. I suspect that it's very similar to Yuki's old 1016 case, but it's hard to say without putting a pair of calipers to it. What I will say is that the lug profile in the top photo looks wrong. Too bulky (like a modern Datejust), and not droopy enough.

If you're hanging around with the sort of pals who insist on taking the bracelet off your Submariner, why wouldn't they just ask to see the movement?
