  1. Unless damaged (so it fails to seal the gasket), Rolex should not require you to replace a caseback, regardless of engravings. As for gen xtals, you might search ebay &/or 1 of the gen forums.
  2. I do not want to hijack the wristies (too much) because the old guitar/watch & motorcycle/watch threads should still be accessible via the search, but here are a few old pics
  3. Any of these? It might be time to update the guns 'n' watches thread.
  4. Ending the work week wearing my Sub
  5. As long as it is installed correctly, the valve is waterproof. Search out my threads detailing the Hev construction for details.
  6. As always, 1st, contact the seller.
  7. Most (not all) aftermarket cases are assembled from off-the-shelf rep parts, which is why they often get so many obvious details wrong & also 1 of the reasons their prices are so ridiculous. In some cases, as mistakes are pointed out, the offending part gets exchanged for another part (often another rep part containing a different set of mistakes). It just seems to be the nature of the biz.
  8. Pan Am was the reason the GMT was produced. Pan Am asked Rolex to research/produce a watch to track 2 different times, so their pilots would not be able to use being confused by the time zone of their destination as the reason for their tardiness in arriving on time for take-off. Initially, the 6542 was intended for Pan Am only, but the tooling costs & early sales of the Turn-O-Graph hinted that a GMT might be a popular seller at the retail level, which it was.
  9. Beautiful work , but are you sure the dial is gen?
  10. Unfortunately, the caseback is laser etched, which easily/instantly IDs it as a fake. Yuki's caseback is also flat & beveled like a modern Rolex, which is incorrect for a 'bubbleback' like the '42, which was more rounded & bevel-less
  11. For more background on Perspex
  12. Still wearing goldie
  13. Wearing goldie today
  14. Like the Lange, the JlC preceded my RWG days & was purchased from some anonymous (& long-gone) rep website I located via 1 of the popular search engines pre-2000. The strap is a German-made Di-Modell, that I added later. Every once in awhile, while searching for something else, I come across a similar JlC model listed on 1 of the RWG sellers websites, so you might search through them or ask if they can source it for you.
  15. Cats - Still a great watch & built by 1 of the best.
  16. Unless you decide to become a watchmaker, just pick up the level 1 tool set here.
  17. Welcome & read Toad's Newbie guide pinned atop the Introduction forum.
  18. Ditto tomhorn's comments, except that I think Lange 1 reps are so far off that I would never wear 1. I have been searching for an accurate Lange 1 rep since long before I came to RWG & I have yet to see anything that does not shout rep. At the very least, to come even close to passing for a gen, a rep would need to have the large date feature, which was the hallmark of the 1 & something that the Asians have not been able to properly master. To sate my Lange desires, I picked up a nice Grand Arkade in 2000, which is pretty good, but also lacks the big date. Though, on the Arkade, it is a less prominent feature, so it is much less of an issue
  19. I see great potential, but how about a caseback pic? The Comex engraving on back is the key with these.
  20. I would still decase the movement & see how the movement runs outside the case. If it is just running slow, check out the pinned threads in the Resource Center forums on how to time your particular movement. If it is actually stopping, then it is time to have it serviced.
  21. I can see how distance could prohibit your ability to visit an AD, but age & income level do not. Like any other retail establishment, there are no age/income stipulations or requirements that you purchase what you try on. That is the downside to retail sales - there will always be 'tire-kickers', who sample without purchasing. Certainly, I would not take advantage of this by wasting the AD's time & personnel, demanding that you be given a tour of everything in the store. But, after you have done your online work to narrow things down to no more than a handful of models, there is no reason you cannot ask to see a few watches. For those who are geographically challenged, reps are a way to risk buying something you may not like without spending thousands on a single watch.
