I need to know once and for all.. is he buying fakes?
freddy333 replied to payhomage's topic in General Discussion
I know nothing about these types of watches, but, if he were selling them, based on the generally fuzzy pics, I would automatically assume them to be reps.- 25 replies

5513 mk4 dial for 5514 project, rep or gen?!
freddy333 replied to quaresma7's topic in The Rolex Area
Originally, without seeing the back, I thought this was a gen dial. But the back looks new/aftermarket. Like Ubi, I also used a ft 1st in my pre-Comex, but the cross in the t should be a bit higher than the cross in the f for a pre-Comex (at least that is the way they are on the 2 gens that I am aware of), which this dial does not have. -
Vintage Daytona: anything wrong with this rep ?

Vintage Daytona: anything wrong with this rep ?
freddy333 replied to alterego's topic in General Discussion
To make a reasonably accurate Newman would require expertise, time & money (mostly for r&d). Some years ago, on behalf of DW, I posted a thread asking whether people would be willing to pay several hundred $ for a 62xx. This was based on a DW 6263 that I had modded, which DW was considering copying for sale. Unfortunately, at the time, DW felt there was insufficient interest to make such a project profitable. -

Vintage is more my thing, but if you are sure something is not working the way it is supposed to (& it is not pilot error), you should begin by asking the seller what you should do.

Looks good , but where is the wristie with the bracelet?

Ditto all of the above. I think you need to spend some time researching the specific model you are interested in. There are a number of good Rolex books, not to mention pics on gen sites as well as google that you can compare reps to. -
Finally, some pics that do these classics justice.

G-S Hypo Cement or clear finger nail polish Whatever you use, make sure it is dry before closing the case.

Gentlemen (you know who you are & DO NOT PM ME REGARDING MD2020 OR RELATED THREADS) - I hate to be heavy-handed, but if another MD2020 thread has to be locked due to personal attacks, at least 3 of you will be affected as well. Please stop the personal attacks now. Final warning.

Diving into Big Crown territory...
freddy333 replied to ubiquitous's topic in The Two R's Watch Reviews - Lani & Ubi
I noticed a couple of things I missed earlier - You posted pics of 2 different inserts & used the later version (I think the earlier would have been more appropriate) Based on the extremely advanced position of the regulator, it looks like there is a problem with the balance & the gib (the tiny X-shaped clip on the rotor) is not locked into place -
Diving into Big Crown territory...
freddy333 replied to ubiquitous's topic in The Two R's Watch Reviews - Lani & Ubi
Top notch, as usual. Was the dial done by KR? Anything short of a gen Oyster rivet would be criminal. -
For a watch that is regularly exposed to water (including rain or getting it wet while washing your hands), once/year is the minimum. Keep in mind that over-tightening the caseback/crown will accelerate gasket wear & a gasket that sealed yesterday may not tomorrow. In my case, for rare or important watches (that covers most of my collection), I avoid moisture altogether even though I run everything through the tester regularly.

Sounds like the threads are stripped. Could be either the crown or tube, though the tube threads are easier to see. I am not sure about 8mm crowns, but in the case of other Twin/Trip locks, you could also have a mismatch between crown & tube, where the threading for the tube begins beyond the end of the tube, which is required for some crowns.
-
I think the min spec is 1.5 turns for Twin/Trip locks. In addition to a crown/tube mis-match or insufficient inner tube diameter (requiring broaching), stem length (if too long) can also limit the number of crown turns.
-
Are you aware that older tubes often need to be broached.

A7750 abruptly started running fast
freddy333 replied to William Campbell's topic in General Discussion
Either the spirals of the hairspring on the balance are touching each other or adjoining components, or you may have misaligned the location of the hairspring between curb pins. If you find issues with the former, you may be able to correct them. However, if there is a problem with the curb pins, I would take the watch to a watchmaker. -
Congratulations on the upcoming projects. What I can see looks very tasty. As far as the ill-fitting 800/8000 combo goes, how well do you know the sources you purchased them from? I have never found a gen crown that did not fit its correct companion tube, which would make me question the authenticity of 1 or both parts. Sadly, while I could be wrong in your case, I have been seeing an increasing number of aftermarket parts in gen-looking packaging & I usually tell people that fitment problems are often the only indicator of this type of scam. Even long-term Rolex dealers have been fooled by some of this stuff.

Original crown would have been a 700 (no dots), but any 7mm Triplock is correct (Rolex would fit a 703 during service).

Looking for Rolex 6542 GMT Master case/bezel dimensions
freddy333 replied to freddy333's topic in The Rolex Area
Bezel diameter Case length (lug tip to lug tip) Case diameter (without crown) Case thickness, measured from flat portion of crystal to caseback Due to the insert's fragility, I cannot remove the bezel to get the bezel thickness, but I think I posted that in 1 of my Phase II constructions threads that you can search out.
